What is the law on selling a handgun to a 20 year old?

Sell to parents, let him shoot it under the supervision of someone 21 or older when at the range. It does not seem to matter if it is on his own property. (I highly doubt any cop would go onto private land and try to arrest someone shooting a handgun in a safe manner, especially if he is 20 years old.) Make sure you know he is responsible enough for a handgun though.

Bottom line, If he is at the range or on his own land (the only places I can think of where he would be shooting) he should be fine. In my experience, nobody will hassle him for being 1 year too young if he is shooting responsibly.

For safety's sake though, he should probably be with a 21 year old or older while at the range.

yup you hit it on the nail head. they won't hassle you on your own property or a range as long as the gun is legal to own. if the gun is not legal to own then that becomes a gray area depending on who's side of the story the judge buys. they have some weird laws up here and some are in reality not enforceable. but i guess the politicos have to get paid for doing something during session.

If the federal government doesn't see fit for a 20 year old to buy a hand gun, why did you?"

As others have mentioned, it is only illegal for FFL holders to sell a handgun to someone under 21, barring any state laws. Statements like that are why I am convinced that we are eventually going to lose.

Statements like that show me that we already have lost.

Not only do we strictly adhere to their unconstitutional laws but feel obligated to over analyze them, ala Wal-Mart

ala Wal-Mart

Risking getting into another Wal-Mart thread, it is still the only place I can buy 9mm for my carbine. Because they choose to follow the law, unlike most online and other retailers that simply say I gotta be 21 regardless of what it is being used in.

over the last 24 hours i have tried to help the best i could to answer the original question to the best of my knowledge after dealing and living in this state and learning every thing i could about our gun laws and the federal gun laws for the last 25 years. If you look at Suaco2's post, he said it the simplest, that is the way the law is written.
but as with any law. it is open to interpretation by citizens and the law.
a father may buy a handgun and give it to his son on his 21st birthday and they are sapposed to complete a private transaction form that is available on the WA. St. web site. if a person over 21 buys a gun for a person under 21 knowingly, this is called a straw buy and is a no-no.
but as with most states and it population there seems to be to much government wanting to know what you are doing. so a lot of people look to by unpapered guns so big brother can not trace them. its not legal but people do it all the time. and to be honest with you most of law enforcement outside the Seattle metro area don't really care. everyone who reads the laws will have a different interpretation of it. people out side the state will try and interpret it the way they do the laws in there state and thats were the problem lies. thats why i have provided links to all our laws, because no matter how you read it from another state, people in this state that have to live it every day see it another way.
do people follow all the laws and do the transfers, some do, some don't.
All I can tell you is most of the law makers live in the Seattle metro area and several police chiefs down that way (Seattle's being the worst) are rabid anti-gun. 3/4 of WA. ST. population is in the Seattle metro area. but it only covers about 1/4 of the state land wise. the rest of the state looks at Seattle like a foreign country because of it political views.
that in its self just about tells it all.

WA state..... though I doubt it matters....

Should I sell it to his parent and then instruct him to hand it down as a gift? It seems kind of superfluous but is that the legal way to go about this? Are private sales subject to the same 21 age rule as dealer sales? I tried google for a few minutes but couldn't come up with anything (no doubt to poor searching skills ).

Thx.

Ingram, aren't you the person who was asking in another thread about being the 18-year-old who wants to get a gun passed legally to him through a parent?

If you are seeking information using the "I have this friend..." method, you are likely to generate distrust in you, and people here will (justifiably) clam up and not want to give you any advice apart from "go away."

You come across as intelligent (anyone who uses "superfluous" AND spells it correctly is okay in my book, at least to start off). It may be that the most intelligent thing for you to do would be to wait until you're 21 -- as wrong as I agree that is -- before you buy a handgun for yourself.

Their only problem with it seems to be an FFl selling a gun to someone under 21.
Maybe someday I'll understand how a gun that goes through an FFL is somehow more dangerous for an 18 year old to own than one that goes through private hands.

I guess the thinking is, "If his parents say it's okay for him to be given a gun, it's okay."

You know, even though we're talking about an 18-year-old "man" (the law calls him that, anyway) who can get married, have sex, join the military, vote for the president, etc. etc.

For some reason, even though he's a legal adult, they want the idea of him having a handgun run by his parents first, rather than him making the decision for himself as an adult, which the law says he is.

It's stupid.

No, I don't think I am. Sorry for the confusion.

OMG, sorry Ingram! I looked back, it was someone called Nimitz who was asking about receiving a gun as an 18-year-old. I apologize for the mistake.
