What is the furthest distance that you practice with a handgun/pistol?

I'm just curious. I typically practice out to 25 yards. However, in unsupported shooting, I also practice out to 50 yards. I even tried 75 yards, today, with my 9 mm (Glock 17 and Sig P229), 40 S&W and 223 AR pistol.

Just curious what you do.

I routinely practice shooting standing at 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards. I shot metallic silhouette for many years and standing was one facet that I really enjoyed shooting. Laying down in the Creedmoor position I shot out to 200 meters, all with open sights. Besides silhouette shooting, I hunted big game exclusively with a handgun from 1980 until just a couple of years ago when I got in to single shot rifles

Most the time 10 to 15 yards freehand and accuracy on the bench at 25. I also have a couple 12" rifle plates set up that i shoot with a pistol and they are probably at 40 and 80 yards away. It is nice for me to take a shot or 2 at them while practicing esp if I hit them.

25, 50 and 100 yards. Hardest part of shooting 100 yds is guaging the elevation. I rarely shoot handgun from a bench.

As far as the range and load will allow. 100m all day every day with iron sights is doable with a decent semi auto, good ammo, and a good shooter. Headshots at 25m or go home.

Distance depends on the game you're playing.

If shooting metallic silhouettes, you need to shoot out to 200meters. You like Bullseye games?....... then you're talking 25 and 50yds. Defensive practice?...., take your choice but usually 5,7,10yds max.

In the summer it is outdoor bullseye competition at 25yds and 50yds.

Winter is 50' indoors, league shooting.

Furthest, 200 yards. Normal is 10-50 yards with some 3 and 100 yards here and there depending on what match I am going to or if I will be handgun hunting.

At the local range they have a man sized steel target at 200 yards on the rifle side of the range. I almost always send a mag or 2 that way. Once you know your hold over it is not that hard to make that steel ring.

Most of my shooting is done under 50 yards. The vast majority, 70%, of that is done under 15.

I usually start at 15 yards, then move back to 20 or 25 yards if I am in the mood.
My outdoor range goes to 125 yards, I enjoy trying to bust clays on the berm at that range with handguns.

During my formative years, my pals and I mostly shot water filled bottles at 100 yards with our trusty sixguns.
For rimfire silhouette, practicing at 100 meters was necessary, for both pistol and rifle.
50 yard centerfire pistol practice was also necessary for some other competitions, too.
Nowadays, the longest shot available at the local outdoor range is 50 yards.
And I spend about 10% practice time at that distance, with the rest at 25 and 15 yards.

I regularly play around at 100 yards. Have taken game and vermin out to that range.

Even though it's there everyday, the 200 yard target doesn't see much use. Not many game or vermin shots available around here at that range so I don't do it very often. Yet....

For me when practicing with my CC gun, it's 10 yds. For my hunting handguns with red dot sights it's 75 yds. My CC handgun is a SA EMP 9mm.
The hunting handguns are .22 LR and .454 Casull/.45 Colt.

Majority is 15 yards and under. Out to 25 yards a little bit but not much. Anything past that I'm just horsing around.

Amazing. At our range I just about never see anyone shooting pistols past 10 yards, and yet everyone in this thread pretty much is reporting that they shoot 25 yards or more. :D

To answer the OP's question I generally practice at 8.5 yards and 10 yards.

Just like MarkCo, I shoot to 200 yards with every handgun now and then.
I own a firing range that goes to 300, so I can do it easily. I can walk down my hill to public ground and shoot rifles to 600 on the same range.

But most of my handgun practice with autos (9mm and 45ACP) is done at 20 yards, and most of my practice with revolvers (357 mag, 44 mag and 454 Casull ) is done at 75 yards.

My reason is simple.
I carry revolvers as "field guns" and I hunt with them fairly often, not to mention that when I am out on my land and I see a coyote, fox, skunk or any such varmint, it's seldom closer then 50 yards. I zero my 357s and my 44s at 50 yards, and at 75 the hold is very close to the same. I zero my 454 at 75 yards dead on.

I carry autos as "town guns" and the idea for them is mostly personal protection. They are all zeroed at 20 dead on.

I do 80% of my shooting 10 yards and under. Within that, probably 40% at 5 yards, 30% at 7, and 10% at 10.

I'm not the best pistol shooter yet, so IMHO I'd be wasting ammo past that distance. Occasionally I'll try at 25 for a bit just for fun.

I only shoot off-hand as I do not see a scenario that I personally would be shooting a handgun rested.

This year I'm going to take up handgun hunting so I'm hoping to improve my distance shooting.
