What is the classic/standard 308 bolt action?

You're asking for the classic/standard bolt action for a cartridge specifically designed (and chambered in the millions) for military automatic weapons. That's like asking for the classic Mustang Hybrid. Even so, the bolt action most chambered in 308 is probably the classic mauser, due the the thousands of rifles rechambered by south-american and spanish military in the 1950. But the true classic rifle for the 308 would be the FN FAL which started the adoption.

This is fun and entertaining, a question almost impossible to answer in agreement. However, I think it is hard to argue against the pre-64 Win Model 70 since the sporting .308 is the .308 Winchester, and since the Model 70 is a descendant of the Model 98 Mauser, which others have espoused above. On the other hand, I would say the Model 700 Remington, if not classic, is the most "elegant" bolt action of the twentieth century, elegant in its simplicity and quality.

Remington 700, Savage110, Winchester 70...all"standards"-and great ones. To me the Classic is the Springfield '03. But that, of course, is 30-06, so I guess it doesn't answer the question.

Which type of bolt-action rifle was used by Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock in Vietnam? It seems to have been the Win. 70 or Rem. 700.

I don't know whether it is the same type used recently by some of our snipers in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The episodes on the Military Channel were impressive. Hathcock might have used an M-14 against the many NVA who were crossing a river (at night?).
