What is required in your state?

I still don't have mine but to get a conceal carry permit you have to have proof you took some kind of pistol class, fill the form out, and pay whatever the fee is. And every so many years you have to pay the fee again. Permits were almost not required, but the law was vetoed. Can't have anything done till next year if they want to try again. It's all about the money. Most people take NRA classes which the instructors are just regular people that took a class and paying a fee. The NRA looses out a big chunk of money if that law went into place. The big loss would be the sherrif departments. I think the fee to have ccw permit is $90, I can't remember. Every so many years, I think 3 or 5 maybe, you have to pay again. Nobody wants to loose out on that money. They said it was to protect people is why it was vetoed, it was to keep money in everyone's pockets.

Be of legal age to own a firearm, not be a prohibited possessor, that is about all there is,
Welcome to AZ, where we know what freedom is like.

A pulse and the money. You have to take a class, but it is a joke. You do have to fire, only to prove you know which way to point the gun. The course "covers" the law. Some instructors do go into detail, most do not.

This sounds about like Tennessee when I took the course around 5 years ago. I am not sure what they were, but I have heard that there have been some changes since then though. Course and state fees combined to around $180 which this thread has made me realize is high compared to a lot of states. It was nearly impossible to fail the course though. The instructor that I had told the answers at the end of the test section and let people correct anything that they got incorrect. We then went to the shooting portion which was 50 rounds at varying distances. The girl in the lane beside me actually hit my target once yet still passed. I talked to the instructor later and he said that the only person he ever failed was a guy that shot himself in the leg.

Wouldn't know. Both states I've lived in have decided that people my age (18-20) don't have the privilege to carry a firearm - let alone the right, since all form of carry are licensed.

My wife and I just got our CCPs here in Virginia. We took a firearm education course in our home, filled out the application, and paid $50 each. We had the permits in hand in six days!

Sounds like most of you had it pretty easy. We spent 11 hours taking a class that covered firearm safety and conceal carry laws. Then we took a very easy test and spent 3 hours at the range while everyone did their qualifying shooting. The class cost 100.00 and it will cost 100.00 more to get fingerprinted and registered with the state.

Walked in with my DD-214 and $50 and received it 2 weeks later. My wife took a classroom course (free because the instructor's horse is her patient) paid $50 received it 2 weeks later.

Like I posted earlier, Texas was relatively difficult. Texas was costly, both in terms money and lost time.... I hear that it's changing.

Washington was easy, as it should be and the cost was a reasonable compensation for the sheriff's office time.

My DSW recently got her TX CHL and the process wasn't any easier or cheaper than when I did it years ago. In 2013, TX did eliminate the requirement to attend a renewal class, but AFAIK this is the only recent change that really makes much difference from a cost or convenience standpoint, and this only affects folks who already have their CHL.

The standard fee is still fairly high at $140; there is a half-price $70 indigent fee, but I have yet to hear of someone actually taking advantage of this.

Lastly, AFAIK there are no significant changes coming other than OC.

Here in AZ you no longer need to get a permit, but you can if you want one. Go the fingerprint route and background check, take an 8 hour class, shoot 5 round ay IIRC 7 feet and another 5 rounds at 21 feet and pass if you hit the silhouette with all 10 rounds. Class covers the basics of the law. No test afterwards other than the shooting. Relatively simple and easy. Permit is good for five years. I have to renew mine next year.

To those who include actual identification of your state, thank you. This can be in your reply or in the Location field, and it does help us learn about the individual states.

And then there are those who don't tell us which state is being described. That is a bit too much OPSEC*, I'd say.

Here in Alabama, I go the the sheriffs office, show them my ID, wait a few minutes while they do a background check, hand them $20 for a 1 year permit ($100 for a 5 year) and they print the permit on the spot and send me on my way.
