What Is Political Correctness?

On the lighter side...

Here is an example of PC gone amok. Try to remember the original words as you read the PC dribble:

12 politically correct days of Christmas

On the 12th day of the Eurocentrically imposed midwinter festival, my Significant Other in a consenting adult, monogamous relationship gave to me:

TWELVE males reclaiming their inner warrior through ritual drumming,

ELEVEN pipers piping (plus the 18-member pit orchestra made up of members in good standing of the Musicians Equity Union as called for in their union contract even though they will not be asked to play a note),

TEN melanin deprived testosterone-poisoned scions of the patriarchal ruling class system leaping,

NINE persons engaged in rhythmic self-expression,

EIGHT economically disadvantaged female persons stealing milk-products from enslaved Bovine-Americans,

SEVEN endangered swans swimming on federally protected wetlands,

SIX enslaved Fowl-Americans producing stolen non-human animal products,

FIVE golden symbols of culturally sanctioned enforced domestic incarceration,

FOUR hours of recorded whale songs

THREE deconstructionist poets

TWO Sierra Club calendars printed on recycled processed tree carcasses and...

ONE Spotted Owl activist chained to an old-growth pear tree.

Merry Christmas Happy Chanukah. Good Kwanzaa. Blessed Yule. Happy Holidays! (unless otherwise prohibited by law)*

* Unless, of course, you are suffering from Seasonally Affected Disorder (SAD). If this be the case, please substitute this gratuitous call for celebration with suggestion that you have a thoroughly adequate day.

My take on "PC"

It is "BS"

Every time I come into this forum I get romped on.

Why is it that so many people seem to * KNOW* what you mean, even when the words, plain and simple, don' t support their spin. If someone says something that I question, then *I QUESTION*

Saves a lot of *Grief* !!!!!!!!!

In the strictest form? Suppression of free speech because of fear that it would offend someone.

Implications are insidious especially on a campus setting where lively debate on any and all issues are suppose to thrive.

nualle, if I understand what you're saying, then what you support in the use of words is not "PC". We're talking about two different views and concepts as to what constitutes PC...

No biggie...

At its most basic, I think it's a form of mind control.

Getting large groups of people to stop thinking for themselves and thinking enmasse with some political agenda...

Subtle in its own way, and dangerous as hell.

It's an old communist (Marxist?) principle: Control the language and you control the debate.

Know PC for what it is and reject it.

You don't have a gender, you have a sex. Why switch terms? To make it easier for them to indoctrinate you?

I believe that Charlton Heston said it best when he said "To me political correctness is just tyranny with manners."

"Political Correctness", especially when associated with the education establishment, is a good example of why humans are not categorically superior to other animals.

Political Correctness is best explained by examples in U.S. political history or elsewhere. During the 1950's when everyone was swept up in McCarthyism and anti-communism, that was the politically correct thing to do - fighting the communists. During the Nixon era, being a flag waving, Vietnam War supporting member of the moral majority was what was politically correct at the time. Today it likewise exists in those who bang the drums for war against Iraq, or some of the rhetoric we hear about the War on Terror today.

I know that might ruffle a few feathers, but coming out against McCarthy might have ruffled a few feathers back then. Likewise, standing up against the Vietnam War might have earned a protester a beating by a policeman's baton or Canine's bite. Isn't that true? By it's nature, politically incorrect has to attract the ire of an ignorant majority, who don't look for an intellectual debate, but have to make threats, or use a baton or intimidation, propaganda and deception. That is the way of a dictatorship by the way and political correctness is no different. Political correctness is walking on egg shells so as not to ruffle the feathers of the storm troopers of the current day.

As I said before, it doesn't matter what period of history you look at, but it was always there. It appeals to the lower mentality, there's usually a sense of nationalism and the propaganda is usually at it's peak - much like Nazi Germany. Can you think of some other examples of political correctness in our history? I think Charlton Heston, our own NRA President, made a speech about what I am talking about. How many people really understood what he had to say that day against Political Correctness?

PC is verbal fascism. Of course its intentions are "benign," as with all totalitarian impulses. Control the language and you control the man.

As one who had most every bone in my body broken and spent 28 days on total life support, and came out of the experience very non symetrical, physically, I'd like to suggest that I am physically challenged.

However..... the only reason that I am physically challenged is because I was left extremely crippled after the incident.

Knowing how much pain I have from a long-ago simple injury to my spine, I can only imagine what your life must be like. You have my sympathies, sir.

It is politically correct to be opposed to political correctness. Hey! Some things one states will fly and some won't. For example, even though anti-gun views are ostensibly welcome on this board, one peep and we're all over 'em, because it is not "politically correct" in this context. Wherever there is an intolerance, there will be a measure of political correctness.
