what is Ackley Improved?

I reload for 30-06 and I would love to have a 30-06AI. One of these days, God willing I will get one. Near 300Win Mag velocities in an improved 30-06 case. I could have alot of fun with that.

I have not heard of this. Really that much improvement in the 30-06? I'm not disputing just saying i didn't know the gain was that much.

Near 300 Win Mag velocities

300WM 190gr. SMK IMR-4350 powder max 3000fps.
30-06 AI 190gr. SMK IMR-4350 powder max 2900fps.
30-06 STANDARD 190 SMK IMR-4350 powder 2700fps.
The spread is more in the lighter weight bullets, but the AI really shines with the heavier.

oooooo I'm liking this. What about the real heavy ones? I would really love to try 240smks in my .300wby. But a .30-06 ackley would be a neat side project also.

It's doubtful that any AI cartridge will give much more than 100 fps increase over it's standard parent cartridge, at the same pressure. Most will give only 60-75 fps increase. I say this from some experience, and I really like AIs.

There is a general rule of handloading that says for a 4% increase in case capacity, you only get 1% velocity increase. Standard Whelen shoots a 250 gr bullet at 2500 fps. My AI version has a measured 2.5% increase in case capacity, and I get 2560 with the same 250 gr bullet. Pressures are very reasonable, and case life is fantastic because of the sharp shoulders limiting brass flow. Now, some people get 2600 out of a standard Whelen, but they are in the 60,000+ psi range. If I loaded my Whelen AI to those levels, I would get 2660-2675 fps, but brass life would suffer and accuracy would probably fall off a bit. I'm more than happy with what I have worked up.

Most of the Ackley are build with good barrel and the options of different twist. when they did the 30-06AI only two 30 cal mag were the 300 H&H/300Wby and the 30-06AI was linked to factory loads for the 300 H&H. There was more 30 cal wildcats made that factory chamber rifles at that time.

Some say if the Ackley loaded to the same pressure levels and the parent case there very little gain other give % of powder to velocity gain. Also most that build an Ackely will not have access to an equal rifle in that parent case to see if there is any real gain as to powder/velocity.

You have to find out what they base the gain. You can have some taking the lowest velocity out of the manual make the Ackley look pretty good.

Again I'll go back to the Nosler manual for the 30-06 most loads start to max 4gr powder spread and velocity spread is appr 200fps if you look at the 223 2gr powder spread start to max and appr 300fps.

When Speer publish their wildcat manual for the 50's they had the pressure for the 7x57AI @ 60kPSI from experience observers same on the 257AI they said "the Pressure are undoubtedly high".

There no free ride with the Ackley's don't get me wrong I like the Ackley's got a 222AI,two 223AI,243AI,35WhelenAI two 280AI.

Near "Speer 12" bs levels for not comparing at the same pressure.

Yes as I was blasted on a PM about internet BS, allot of the AI's were pushing much higher pressures then the parent cartridge was loaded at when PO came up with the AI's,, example the 257 Roberts, now in the 257+P it is almost equal if not to the 257AI. Plus with the improved powders of today. Again, except for the cool factor, you can just notch up to the next hotter factory cartridge.
