What Is A "Hollow-tipped Cop-Killer" Bullet?

They're the ones with "COP" etched into the brass.

That means that if you were to fire them at scuba divers, circus clowns, and geologists, it would not hurt them in the least. Feels like a chigger bite, actually. I was inadvertantly shot by one of them last Thursday evening while walking over to my friends' house to play canasta. I got in the line of fire and the bad guy shot ME by mistake. I saved that cop's life. Luckily they were cop-killer bullets, so they didn't affect me at all.

A class of ammunition feared by a whole lot of people who know nothing about ammunition or firearms and used as a bugbear term to engender/encourage that fear in those people by others whose privately- or government-provided bodyguards carry guns to protect them.

Saw earlier that the senior Senator from MA had proposed such an amendment....

People learn that guns don't kill, bullets do. Then they take a look at those horrible hollow tipped bullets. They fantasize about dropping yellow cake or AIDS needles into that evil hollow recess. Next, they consider connecting a cop sensing module to the shell casing. Then they go out hunting for cops.

What these people really fear is themselves.

Another lie of the left, Ted kennedy refers to hollowpoints as cop killers. The left fabricates lies to meet their agenda and the media is their enabler. This is just another tactic to slowly eliminate the use and ownership of firearms by the left. If you cant get the guns, get the ammunition, I am sure some remember the left with their ammuniton tax idea, tax ammo out of existance just like tobacco. Like I said in a post in another forum, anyone who votes democrat and claims to support gun ownership is only kidding themself. Sadly some of the cops are also anti's and support the left with their cop killer hollowpoint lie.

The perceived influence of the 3+ million member NRA is amazing. How can 3 million people dominate 285 million people? In a country with a population of around 285 million people, if even 10 percent of the population agreed with the democrats on gun control (28.5 million), they would dwarf the NRA membership and render them insignificant.

The democrats (and many republicans) just don't seem to get it.

So, I thought the "cop-killer" bullets were the armor-piercing ones. Now they are the ones that are much less likely to pierce armor? Do these guys even bother to do research or do they just fly a flag and see if anyone salutes?

Looks like Ted has been hitting the sauce again.

Hollowpoints are much less likely to pierce a ballistic vest than ball ammo. They expand on impact, thereby assuring they won't be able to pass through the fibers. In the tests I have done, they often don't do much more than penetrating the carrier and kevlar liner with little or no penetration of the kevlar.

Don't blame the media too much for this ignorant statement. People thought the teflon coating on the Black Talons would allow the rounds pass through vests. I have even seen cops on TV state that hollowpoint pistol ammo is cop-killer ammo that will pass through a vest. No doubt the media may be getting improper information from folks they would consider to be experts, the cops.

Wake Up, Gunowners!!

The perceived influence of the 3+ million member NRA is amazing. How can 3 million people dominate 285 million people? Gunowners just don't get it. There are 80 million gunowners in America, we are told. WHY IN H*LL they are voting for gun grabbing scum like Kerry by the tens of millions is a mystery to me. In 2004, Bush should have gotten 80 million votes, just from gun owners. His win would have been a landslide.

Yeah, I know - "There are other issues to consider." Then tell me one thing: Exactly what is more important than your right to self defense - the right to own the tools that are mandatory to protect yourself and your family from thugs, intruders, robbery, rape, maiming, autocratic rule, and genocide perpetuated by government officials, who have at last count killed over 150 million of their own unarmed citizens?

If you can think of anything more important than that, you d@mn well better get your priorities straight, plain and simple.

If we where to take the mindset of tjhands then,

The "bullets" that "COPS" carry are useless against civilian targets then, aren't they?

What I mean is, if they are ONLY used for killing cops, then the rest of us are safe from being shot by "COPS"......right?

So with this mindset, the only people COPS can kill, would be other COPS.
Doesn't make much sense does it? Well, the anti's rarely DO make any sense, I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out where they get their logic.

The "COP Killer bullet" thing is old as dirt, it's a term coined by the media to invoke fear into the ignorant and the uninformed.

You could compare the phrase to the "assualt rifles" term the media, and the anti's use to incorrectly describe something they don't, or refuse to, understand.

Fortunately, we, the pro 2A people, are usually wise to the propoganda the media and the anti's spew.

We tend to use logic and common sense to articulate our points for protecting our 2nd amendment rights, something the other side is unwilling, or unable to do.

It's much easier to confuse or mislead the ignorant to make your point than it is to tell the truth about a debate you want to win, hence then term "cop killer bullets" and "assualt rifles".

The bullet that most closely hits the definition of "cop killer bullets" are the bullets resting in a cop's handgun. I forget the exact statistic, but a large percentage of LEOs killed each year is done with their own weapon.

A little history if I may, the history first, technical points second.

The original so called Cop Killer Bullets were, as memory serves me, otherwise known as KTW Bullets, those teflon coated projectiles. The inmitals came from the names of the three gentlemen who devised and developed them. Re these bullets, a couple of points of interest. They haven't been made in years. When they were being produced, they were available for LAW ENFORCEMENT PURCHASE ONLY, ON SUITABLE PURCHASE ORDER. They were developed to enhance the penetration and stopping power of what were then the usual police service round, the 158 grain, round nose lead bullet, normally associated with the 38 Special cartridge. Any readers should feel free to correct any errors I migt have made.

As to these HOLLOW TIP, more often described as HOLLOW POINT BULLETS, they are designed to expand, while Metal Cased, or full metal jacket (FMJ) bullets are not so designed. By the way, Hollow Point/Hollow Tip bullets, while supposed to expand, do not always do so. Some designs are better than others.

In any event, in my view, media should never be forgiven for the damage they have done, through their own stupidity, or is cupidity a better term?

KSFreeman:

You could be right, however in checking my discionary, I found the following for CUPIDITY. Ararice, greed. Also under from Latin, to desire.

Possibly something of a stretch, but then it might fit.

If I remember the academy correctly, the percentage of cops kills by their own guns (of those which died as a result of gunfire per year) is 80%.

f I remember the academy correctly, the percentage of cops kills by their own guns (of those which died as a result of gunfire per year) is 80%.

Does that include suicide? I have the impression that suicide among cops is an occupational hazard.
