What is a good slug gun?

Good slug gun,, Ithaca Deerslayer III or a Tar Hunt.. which is better 12 or 20..Well there is nothing a 20 can do,, a 12 won't do better.
 
I agree with the Ithaca deerslayer, and disagree with the 20ga/12ga opinion...

But NOT in THE ART OF THE RIFLE.........

Most slug guns have rifled barrels, which would make them, by definition, rifles.
 
Most "slug" shotguns have rifled barrels. That makes them classifiable as rifles in my book.

I like the 12ga, but have never shot a 20ga slug-gun. I guess they would be fine...
 
Aa-Ha, The words "most" and "slug-guns",, just keep popping up.. It's going to be hard to keep it on topic here in the art of the rilfe...
Don't try too hard to convince anyone that a "slug-gun" is a rifle if you live in a shotgun only state or county, or you may end up pushing those slugs out of a smoothbore..... The anti's are everwhere....

I grew up in a SHOTGUN only area, and I hunted for years with a bolt action mossberg, 12 ga. But my all time favorite is the older model of deerslayer, 20 ga. with a good scope.
 
I got one of the Mossberg 500 "package deals" with a slug barrel (non-rifled) with rifle sights and a standard barrel w/screw in choke tubes.The slug barrel will print cloverleafs at 50 yards with Forster slugs.And it was cheap too.

I have one of those New England single shot slug guns. I purchased it for a one time deer hunt in a slug only area. The gun cost me less than an extra barrel for one of my other shotguns.

It shoots very well and is light enough enough to make carrying easy.

But it has one drawback. The recoil! You forget how much a shotgun kicks until you fire a slug through a light, single shot gun, from the bench. Thank God I was able to sight in quick!!!
 
I use an 870 express with a cantalever mounted hastings rifled barrel. I shoot lightfield EXP slugs. It shoots them into 2" 3 shot groups at 100 yards.

In Ohio a shotgun is classified by the ammo it shoots, not by what barrel it has.
 
Mossberg 500 with a fully rifled barrel. You can use the smooth bore for turkey or other birds and use the slug barrel for deer/hogs. REMEMBER that the sabot slugs are expensive!
 
See, we just keep talking about shotguns... This thread is great but it's just in the wrong forum..

Oh well.. As long as we're on it, a shotgun can never be a rifle. It can be similar, sure, with a Rifled barrel.... No matter what else is going on, we're talking about a SLUG, shot out of a "rifled" Shotgun barrel. The RIFLING, is what gives SOME of the benifits of a Rifle in a Shotgun...

bill, I like you, and I have agreed with a lot of things you have said in the past.. And I'm sure I will again, but I'm not buying your Book...

Ever heard of a "shotgunned" barrel on a Rifle?.... Me either...

This post is off topic, but the thread is misplaced, don't blame me, I just read here....

Should I write a "this post was made with friendly intentions" disclaimer soon, or should I wait? I'm not busting on you guys for defending rifled shotgun barrels,, how could I? They have a place in the world,, but they are not rifles..
They have a place in the world just like rifles do...
And a place on this website....
 
High Standard! My K-120 with rifle sights is one of the most accurate shotguns I've ever seen with a smooth bore. I can clover 3 shots at 50 yds, offhand, with plain old Wally World rifled slugs. Light, handy and pretty darn good looking. But if you really want interchangeable barrels, it may not be right for you. The Ithaca would be my second choice.

I think they came in rifled barrel 12 ga. only. You can find them used now and then. They are nice. After reading these posts I don't know if it's a rifle or a shotgun. Mine has a weaver 3x scope. Don't know if it's like the Duck thing or not but it looks like a rifle, shoots like a rifle and kills like a rifle so it must be..........something
 
"...by definition..." Yep. It's a rifle by definition. However, it depends on your local hunting regs. I asked ours if a rifled barrel shotgun was ok in a shotguns only WMU and they said yes.
There were slug guns long before there were rifled barrels for shotgun actions. There are likely far more slugs fired out of smooth bores than rifled barrels. Don't have a lick of evidence to support that though. Except that rifled shotgun barrels are a relatively new thing.
