what is a better round

While I am by no means an expert on these two rounds they are quite different.

.303 is comparable to the .308 or 30-06, while 7.62x39 is more like .223 or 6.8.

One is a full size rifle round while the other is an intermediate.

Welcome to TFL, russqm. :)

A more realistic comparison would be that the 7.62x39 has the same power level as the classic .30-30 Winchester, and is sometimes referred to as a poor man's .30-30 (autoloader, in an SKS).

The .303 British is a full-length, full-power (non-magnum) round comparible in power to the .30-06 & 8x57 Mauser.

Neither one is either better or worse than the other - they are similar to apples & oranges, and like the different fruits, YMMV depending upon their intended use & ammo source(s).

A better round for what?

My thoughts, exactly.

If I needed to shoot a pachyderm, I want something bigger than the x39 .....if my government sent me to Borneo to fight in the jungle ..... I'd hate to carry around 100+ rounds of .303 .......

303 is more powerful, has better trajectory, and better BC bullets and therefore more range.

7.62x39 is cheap, generates less heat and recoil, easier to find, lighter. And is much more likely to be available on a semi auto/full auto platform.

They both have their advantages. We need to know what specifically, you're planning to use the cartridge for, to tell you which one is 'better.'

They are both good rounds. Different to be sure and each excels in different areas. Hard to say which is better without looking at the intended application.

Petah W:

An assault rifle is a select-fire rifle firing an intermediate-power cartridge. I assume he's referring to an AK-47 which, in its true military form, is an assault rifle.

No sense in babbling on.... the OP hasn't been here since he posted the question, say nothing of clarifying the intent, so we don't really have anything to discuss.

russqm, if you do happen to return, feel free to repost your question, with some clarity of purpose and hopefully some participation in the discussion.
