What if attacker tries to take your firearm

Impliment retention techniques. Shoot if gun is out. Trap hand on gun if in holster and slice attacker's arms and face as if he was cut by a drunken butcher.

What kind of attack are you under?
He/she is unarmed? And you're still there? (Not able to retreat) And your weapon is drawn... why?

Big guy?
Little guy?
Mad ex wife?
Single guy?
Group of guys?
Group of Mad Ex-Wives? :D

In some instances where you truly fear for your life (or others around you) answer a. since your weapon is out (shoot or bludgeon with heavy object in hand)

In other instances, seek answer b.

If it's a group of mad ex-wives... you'd better off just shooting yourself cause eventually you know you'll end up marrying another one

I remember an episode of the original Star Trek where Captian Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty were transported into the old west, caught in the time of the shootout at the OK Corral. The bartender in the town told Kirk, in a fear-crazed desperate tone of voice, "Just kill him any way you can, man!!! Nobody won't say nothin'!!!"

Oh, for the good old days...:D

first i'd laugh cause i keep my ammo seperate from the gun. i'd be laughing my butt off at the stupid idiot attacking me. then he'd point my gun at me and demand my ammo and i'd immediately comply, since hes got a gun pointed at me!

i cant tell if i've had too much caffeine today or not enough....

We talked about this at the academy and even did some retention drills followed up by the evaluation (why did you.... how did you.... etc). If a person reaches for your weapon, he has defined himself as a lethal threat. This applied (in our work throughs) whether your weapon was holstered or drawn. If the suspect made an attempt to grab your firearm, you would be justified in firing upon him/her. Now, you have to be able to articulate(key word for the academy) why it was that you thought the suspect was a lethal threat, but it was pretty clear that "suspect was attempting to get my gun from me" was good enough.

I wholeheartedly agree! Preventing an attacker already in close quarters from separating you from your weapon, is a skill that everyone carrying a gun needs to know.

Doesn't that usually mean simply, "Hold him off with your non-gun hand and fire at him with elbow bent and tucked against body so the gun is not extended toward him for him to grab"?

I thought that the original thread-starter question was about being hounded by a guy who is coming at you UNarmed, but knowing that his intention is to TAKE your gun and then use it against you.

Like, for example, let's say you're on your property, and you hear noise on your front porch at night. You open your front door, gun in hand (fine, not tactically a great idea but still something that many people end up doing), to find a stranger on the front walk. He turns, aggressively, no weapon in sight. He begins to approach you, saying stuff that may be threatening, or maybe unintelligible. You know that he sees your gun. ARE YOU ABLE TO LEGALLY SHOOT, SINCE YOU KNOW THAT IF HE GETS YOUR GUN, IT'S LIGHTS-OUT? Keeping in mind, of course, that until he gets YOUR gun, he doesn't have one.

I read the topic question, and skipped all of the following answers, (WITH APOLOGIES), because I have the only viable answer which should be clear.

You shoot him.

What if attacker tries to take your firearm from you. He's unarmed but won't be if he gets your firearm from you.
If he's unarmed in the first place, and you pull heat,,,you're going to end up having quite a discussion with the local constables..

Where it goes from there depends on the local political winds.

Well, someone can certainly try to take your gun without you pulling it out first.

Here in the desert there have been occasions of people attacking security guards, grabbing their weapons, and running away with such, for example.

I believe the standard reply to this question is: He might get it, but he'll have to beat me to death with it 'cause It'll be out of ammo and he'll be full of holes.
In actuality, all sorts of things might change that.

Why, I'd stand there and let him take it, of course.

If someone attacks you and lays hands on you, your options are a LOT more wide open.
