What Do You Want In A Gunshop?

I know I've already given one answer.

Here's my formula for a guns shop I just couldn't stay away from: 80% used guns at good prices, with high turnover in inventory. Only 20% of the guns would be new, and they would be guns that you don't routinely find on gunbroker or gun shows.

I also would like to see more shops carry re-loading supplies, seems to me that they would bring in more customer/shooters to their store if they did.

New gun/indoor rental range suicide event; range safety....

For a gun shop or FFL holder office or indoor/public shooting range, SAFETY and SECURITY should be part of the business model or workplace plans.

A large popular indoor rental range/outdoor sports location in my metro area had another suicide/shooting event about 3 weeks ago.
The gun shop/business has 3 locations & this incident was the 3rd or 4th in the last 2 years. :(
I honestly do not know how the owner/company can afford the business insurance or how they can keep open but they do.

Dont get me wrong. I've bought or sold 3 or 4 firearms there and on the surface it has a lot to offer(good parking, ammunition, gear, firearms, knick-knacks, stuffed wildlife, etc). It's just sad that unstable or disturbed people chose to end their lives in places like the indoor range.
It goes back to what I posted on gun/tactics forums before about shooting at indoor or private ranges during the "off hours" or when less "weekend Rambos" are blasting away.
I'm not Dr Phil & I don't do crazy. ;)

When I owned a gun shop
What did I want in it!
six foot tall,,,,, good looking blond, that likes guns.

I had one lady with hair in curlers wearing a robe and smoking, telling her husband he is a loser for wanting to shoot a deer. He was a local Surgeon!
ha! it really happen.

Oh yea, once at Ben Avery shooting range here in Phoenix, AZ.
I had a lady set up next to my wife and I, shooting a big Pistol every other shot she would fall out of her shirt!
I would then fall off the bench.
and then my wife would kick me. Boy i had bruised shins.
this happened not in a gun shop but at the range, does it count?

The barrel on the GSG-5 pistol is only about 8 or 9 inches long. Big SBR violation if a shop sells it with a retractable and/or folding stock.

My LGS offers free transfers since I buy there quite often. That might be something to offer. If you purchased 3 guns in the last year you get a free transfer that year.

As stated earlier, off hours for your shooting range.
Offer packages for new CCW candidates. Gun and course for xxx dollars. Some variety on the guns.

My LGS also offers to order anything I might want. If the price is the same if I order it or the LGS orders it, I would go for that as a excuse to go back.

Friendly & trustworthy salemen. Big selection. Reasonable prices. I'm very fortunate to have all those in the shop I deal with.

I think what irks me the very most is surly help. I can decide if I can and/or will pay their price, or am happy with the selection, etc. etc. Surly, rude or condecending sales people are a deal killer. I don't care if they are selling ARs
for $200.00 bucks or giving away ammo. My wife started her business 17 years ago. She didn't have the fanciest, or the newest equipment and whatnot. But guess what? 17 years later she is still in business and she has seen 15 competitors come and go. Why? Because she has great customer service skills. My .02.

BOLO!....

2 quick points;

As for staff/armed security/range control-safety officers, be able to quickly ID or prevent problem customers or range shooters.
You don't have to be a $&@-hole or frisk browsers like a TSA agent but use common sense & good judgement. ;)
I was in a gun shop/indoor range when 2 clearly intoxicated people(a man & woman in their 40s/50s) came in & wanted to sell a big Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull revolver. I asked the red faced, #%*+ faced couple if I could check the Super Redhawk .454. I opened the big cylinder to insure the DA revolver was unloaded. It was. The young male sales clerk was completely unconcerned with the pair & acted ambivalant about the whole thing. :(

The 2nd point is for all retail products or items have clearly marked price tags or labels. It irks me when I go into a business and the sales staff or mgmt can't find or ID a product sale price.

The late Sam Walton(of Walmart) would flip if he saw the way some retail shops run.
