What do you think of the CZ 75 Compact w/decocker?

Eyeing this pistol, 9mm 14+1 magazine. Any owners out there? What do you think of it, terms of reliability, accuracy, build quality, and ease of concealment?

What is the best holster available for it, and does it come with an extra mag?

Thanks :)

Are you looking at the PCR or the P01? Both are great guns and would serve you well. One thing about CZs if you are picking one up make sure you put your hands on the one you are buying and dry fire it with a snap cap. They all will cam a bit and you want to pick one that does it less.

They have a heavy DA trigger which can be rough out of the box but should smooth use use or dry firing. Remember to always use a snap cap with CZs. They used to come with them but no longer. The SA trigger will be good but sometimes can be a bit mushy. Again I find they clean up a bit from shooting. The weight of the pulls will vary DA seems to be between 10-12lbs and the SA will 5 to 6lbs. Both of which I consider acceptable.

It should come with 2 mags. Manual and cleaning rod. IIRC they still come with a test target.

As for holsters they are too personal a choice to make a recommendation IMHO. It would help if you told us how you want to carry. In the waist band, paddle or outside the waist band etc.... Will the holster be for concealed carry, gun games or duty. From there we can make somewhat meaningful recommendations.

Adrian44, I've got the alloy-framed P-01, hands down it is my #1 EDC, replacing many other pistols on its climb to the top! I cannot comment on the 75 Compact except that you won't have a rail on it and it will be slightly heavier in weight due to it's steel frame.

Anyway, I have no problem concealing my P-01 (or any pistol for that matter) IWB while wearing shorts and a t-shirt pretty much year round.

In my book I am going to say that it is very reliable, as it has flawlessly fed 550 rounds with no cleaning other than the initial degreasing out of the box.

It's accuracy will be determined by your abilities, but nonetheless it will put the rounds where you are aiming. It is a very accurate pistol, to say the least.

My take on its build quality is excellent. Some people gripe about the out of sight, out of mind interior finish on CZ's (or rather lack thereof), but it in no way, shape, or form effects the weapon's functionality.

Just be mindful that until you start breaking the trigger in with lots of shooting and dry firing, it is going to be a little rough at first, especially in DA. But then it will smooth out very nicely.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the invaluable feedback! I'm looking at the one with the metal frame, not the P01, and I carry inside the waist band.

I'm kinda worries about the dry firing though. Will the firing pin break if I do lots of dry firing without a snap cap? One of my favorite ways to adjust to new triggers is dry firing at home.

Thank you very much.

P01 and the PCR both have metal frames. Both are alloy. P01 has a rail the PCR does not. Sights are a little different. There are other differences but I cannot remember them of the top of my head.

I dry fire extensively and never without a snap cap. Just an old habit I established a very long time ago. Get you some for when you are training around the house, or even at the range.

Have somebody at the range load your magazine(s) for you without you watching so that they can put a snap cap or 2 in at random. Great for catching yourself on any discrepancies when live firing concerning your trigger control and/or breaking your hand down anticipating the shot.

Cajun Gun Works sells an improved firing pin/ springs/ roll pin kit that solves the dry firing issue (snap-caps are still cool, though). Perusing the CGW and CZ Custom sites will introduce you to a wonderful world of CZ goodness.:D

Just put a few in multiple mags and shuffle the mags in your hands. If you can remember the exact location of each snap cap from memory you got me beat.

I got my P-01 last week, ran 1 box of shells thru it and qualified for my CHL on Saturday. I scored 242 out of a possible 250. I know that isn't great, but with a new gun and limited handgun experience I was happy. As far as complaints about the trigger, it is great if you compare to a Taurus or a Bersa.....ymmv....:)

They are certainly better trigger than you are used to. They normally clean up after lots of dry firing or a few thousand rounds. IMHO without changing parts it will reach a point where it is smooth but might not be excellent but 100% serviceable.

Me too.... Now that is just a plain old fashioned good idea. Thanks!

A point of clarification and further info. CZ makes a series of compact guns based on the original CZ-75 design. I think this is complete, but they slip in new models from time to time. (I've seen an alloy-framed Compact, for example, recently... but I've not seen it listed on any of the sites.)

  • There is the CZ-75B Compact (notice that the "Compact" -- capital C -- is a model name.) It has a STEEL frame and a safety rather than a decocker.

  • There is the CZ-75B D (also known as the PCR), which has an alloy frame and a decocker. PCR frames were originally CAST (as are most CZ frames). The PCR is now -- according to the latest info on the CZ-USA site -- forged (like the P-01). The PCR has a different rear sight -- similar to the Novak sight.

  • There is the P-01, which is similar to the PCR, has a forged alloy frame, and a decocker. The frame has an extended dustcover, so it's a bit thicker than the PCR toward the front of the gun.

  • There is a P-02, sometimes available through the Custom Shop (but shown on the European (CZUB) website), which is the P-01 with the new Omega trigger system. I've only read about this gun, but the Omega system typically gives the user the option of converting to Decocker or Safety (and back) easily.

  • There is the P-06, which is the P-01 modified to handle .40 S&W.

  • There is the SDP, available through the CZ Custom Shop, which is a very refined P-01, with a good bit of custom work; it sells for roughly twice the price of the P-01. (The CZ SDP is apparently quite similar in refinement to the new Sphinx SDP, which is a fine weapon.)
Some of the newer models have reversible mag releases and use the PCR trigger (which is more curved than the Compact trigger, and which slightly reduces the length of pull.) All of non-Omega decocker models decock to the half-cock notch, which also shortens and lightens trigger pull. I am unfamiliar with the Omega system...

To make it even more confusing, I recently saw a CZ 75 Compact slide on a P-01 frame (the slide was lacking the P-01 marking). I went back twice because it struck me as odd. A Google search found it's not too uncommon.
