What do you think? Does the ATF watch sites like these?

Considering there are alot worse people out there creating websites and posting their insanity on web-sites, I would think the Feds, if they do look at a site like this one, would view us as pretty decent citizens compared to what is really out there in the world.
If anything at all, they probably check out these sites occasionaly and see if they are just a friendly firearms forum or if it is a website to gather terrorists.
Gun boards already have their fair share of LEOs on them, so if anything was looking to be going illegal, I'm sure there are people on these boards who would say something to the Feds.

i dont think they are perusing each and every thread daily here. in the days following 9/11 i recall hearing tales of the feds being quick to jump on message board posters who expressed sympathy and glee at that tragedy.

i'm positive that there are certain words that once posted to message boards are flagged, and therefore i have always found it silly for people to go on and on in great detail about revolutions, what they'd like to do to their elected representatives, talk of retribution for supposed rights-violations, etc. even after the last election there was quick work that had to be done by mods/admins on forums like DU to protect their members, who were posting about things like assasinations.

in my opinion, it comes down to people being 'all bark, no bite'. do the feds really have to worry about the few members that are the most vocal about their frustration at federal agencys? of course not. they need to worry about those who prefer action over rhetoric.

Cperli,

Announcing you're a BATF agent on this forum you'd probably be treated as badly as a Democrat.

Would YOU announce yourself?

I dunno.

Maybe, maybe not.
I generally dont talk specifically about my profession now- aside from being Agent Schmuckatelli's better-looking alter ego. So if i was an ATF agent, i doubt i would 'come out' even more, pride in my work or not.

Unfortunately, i could not be at peace with myself if i was an ATF agent; at least not if i was in the 'F' portion. Taxing the vices of drinking and smoking is a bit un-American, and bad enough. But those activities are NOT specifically protected from infringement by the Highest Law of Our Land.
But the right to keep and bear arms IS; and therefore I believe that the entire 'F' portion of the agency is wholly unconstitutional, and should be dismantled completely. For what its worth, there are many other jobs i could not allow myself to do: an abortionist, for example.

Pick and chose your freedoms ?:)

By the way there are no "abortionists"...there are only ob/gyns who may in the course of their medical practice terminate pregnancies.

not quite

I dont decide on freedom per se, but wether or not the action is right or wrong.

The fact that freedom is right might be considered a coincidence, but i doubt it.

ATF should read sites like this?
Sure! They need to learn about guns and gun laws somewhere.

You know when you call ATF and talk to a field agent, and they tell you they're going to look into it and will call you back. They're actually looking it up in TFL!:D

If they don't already, I hope they do. They just might learn something positive about gun fanatics.

When someone wants to hate and despise you, they make it a point to never let themselves learn about how good and likeable you are.

Do you think that Sarah Brady, Chuck Schumer, Denis Henigan, Ted Kennedy, Rebecca Peters, are unable to look into what kind of people the 80,000,000 American gun owners really are? Do you think they honestly believe that 80,000,000 people are ignorant, belligerent, reckless, dangerous, psychopathic nuts, as they constantly portray us?

No, the misportrayal of us is deliberate, and it goes right on up through the agencies of the government, and they have no interest in knowing us as stable, good people.

that's SO true

True. Shameful but true.
Do you (and I) really want to know that aside from the gun thing, good ol' Chuckie Schumer is a pretty fun guy to hang around with? or that Teddy K is actually rather pleasant after a few drinks?
or that Finestein and brady are... um... OK, bad examples. But you get my point?

I know several BATFE agents and they are all very good people, and no, they've never been asked / told to watch a gun site or go to a gun show. :)

Most of them do however as they, like myself, are LEOs who love guns and the 2nd amendment.

Let us be reminded, Wild, that there are REAL problems with the ATF. Not blackhelicopter conspiracy stuff, but REAL problems.

There is the NFRTR bogus data problem.

There is the mess that the Firearms Technology branch is.

There is the minor fact that the very existence of the ATF is contrary to the Second, Ninth, and Tenth Amendment.

Let us be reminded that a lot of what ATF does is enforcing malum prohibitum laws.

But no.

There's no moral ambiguity whatsoever about what they do.

Malum prohibitum laws are not necessarily wrong or unconstitiional

I read that quite easily - of course I've had five beers

I wouldn't doubt that they do read the gun boards.

Especially the most popular ones.

I don't think they are targetting anyone, but just to get an "ear" on the gun community and what are the hottest issues at the time.

Remember, information can be used for abuse or for good, how they wish to use what is being said is up to the individual agent and what they want (promotions, credit, etc..).

When I joined the Air Force they ran a BG (back ground, not bad guy) check. I was absolutey amazed at what they had in my federal file.

Seems that when they did BG checks on my Dad (he's retired Air Force) for his security clearances, they checked out the entire family. Then I joined the Air Force with an initial Secret and then a TS. When I took the paperwork into AFOSI and told them that I couldn't remember or didn't remember some information they asked for, they run my file and said, "Don't worry about it, it's on file".

Seems that even the kids of active duty military are checked out before they can attend a military school on base (Holland at the time).

Am I worried about it.. no. Do I have anything to hide, I don't know, they know more than I do about that. And most people here have some sort of file at some federal level. Wild because he's an FF01, Me for having an FF03, being Military (out but still condersided), others for the same reasons.

So, the short answer is, probably :).
