What do you think? Does the ATF watch sites like these?

Hello, pondering the idea for the past few days, I was curious to think what you think. Does the ATF or any other type of government watch sites like these?

I enjoy the information that is posted on sites like these. Being new to the site I see how close everyone is. I see responses to all topics.

So back to the issue at hand; does Uncle Sam watch what we say?

Happy New Year to you all. Hope to hear from you!

Absent something that would bring anyhting here to their attention, I think not..

The goverment is too busy with serious stuff...

It's a public forum, they are welcome to visit if they want. My understanding is that most of our Gov. L.E. employees of various stripes are up to their butts in "Homeland Security" tasks. I suppose if one were to make alot of noise that way, someone in one of the agencies MIGHT drop in to take a look. Most of the people in places like this aren't part of the problem, and they know this. Imagine how much manpower (let alone money) it would take to patrol every forum on the 'net and analyze whatever "threat" might be posed. These people are not all bad guys, hell some of them might even be just like some of us:eek:. Imagine that.

Unless someone posts a video of them and their 500 illegal machineguns I doubt they take any of the stuff here seriously.

Their computers do the watching for them...

It keys on certain words and phrases...

Yes, LE watches and the FBI is the prime source of the info...

I'm glad they watch...

As long as they leave the Law Abiding Citizen alone in the process...

But then, I wonder if they know the difference... :D :D :D

Do you not have a freedom of speech?

Unfortunately, my state has a law, which words quoted state: "An ommission is an offence" - meaning that if you admit to anyone about doing anything which you believe is against the law, you are liable to be subjected to the penalties of the crime committed.

The moral of the story - if you know it's wrong... why would you post it in the first place??

Every once in awhile, in the sales forums, there will be a blatantly obvious attempt by a new member to get other folks to do illegal stuff on their behalf -- stuff like mail a firearm state-to-state without going through an FFL, or purchase something for them that they are unable to buy for themselves due to being underage.

Or there will be a thread in one of the discussion forums asking about how to illegally produce a full-auto firearm from available parts or some other such blatantly illegal activity. Often these ask for "personal experiences" or some such.

They seem to come in cycles. You'll see a double handful of such threads for a week, and then they stop coming. (Of course, that goes for a lot of other online nonsense, too...)

TFL mods have always been really good at killing or disappearing these, posthaste, because such stupidity is counterproductive to the site's founding principles & purposes. Not to mention being against forum rules and really annoying too.

But you have to wonder how many of them are made by bored lawmen, fishing for a bite.

The hallmarks of big government, socialism, and general tyranny, are that SOOOO many people work for the government, and government is doing so many busybody things designed to increase government influence and/or make government look "productive," that the legions of government "workers" become a gigantic culture of low motivation mixed with very little real work to do. Government is a living example of the adage "idle hands are lucifer's workshop." Gun owners have watched for decades as the BATF has sought out any opportunity it can to make itself look important and necessary. They are the kings of entrapment, just ask Randy Weaver.

This statement from this thread is extremely naive, and one of those things that sounds like it should be true, but real world experience proves otherwise:

The goverment is too busy with serious stuff...

That presupposes that government is noble and focuses on "serious stuff" (whatever that means) as opposed to the reality that government is only concerned with exercising and increasing it's power base.

The "too many folks not enough agents" line is amazing because it ignores hundreds of years of history. I don't know where to begin. The writer clearly has no clue how many people actually "work" for the federal government, let alone the BATF. The writer needs to take a refresher course on the East German government from not too many years past. Skilled police states DO NOT NEED millions of agents.

To answer the question of the thread, of course BATF keeps an eye on firearm forums. They don't have to leave the office to do it for one thing. Furthermore, it takes very little time. They're probably looking for trends and getting ideas for their next make work project. We found out several years ago that BATF also subscribes to Shotgun News because they called it a "subversive publication."

They might drop in from time to time, but this is a fairly law-abiding forum.

I would imagine they would spend a lot more time at the stormfront or totse forums, and other such similar places.

This forum doesn't pose nearly as much of a risk to leave unmonitored.

If they monitor, well... This is a public forum, anyone's welcome to read it.

Now, if they were backtracing, monitoring *protected* communications like PMs and members only forums, that's something to shout about.

Actually, I'd kind of like any government entities watching to pipe up now and then to lend their opinions.

While we probably envision them differently, I'm sure many ATF agents are firearms enthusiasts, and may enjoy this forum as members.

I also imagine they would shy away from mentioning that they are part of that "fun" organization.

It is always best to presume that your company is mixed unless you know better.

From The Desk of Agent Schmuckatelli, ATF...

Dear TFLers,
No we do not monitor this nor any other firearm-related forum. Yes, please do continue to post without regard to who is reading your posts.

ATF firearm enthusiasts

Well, I can say for certain that the ATF does have agents who are firearms enthusiasts- just never met one in the 'F' branch. But have met some guys who love to shoot in the other areas, especially the new "E" (explosives) branch. Those old EOD guys love to shoot.

As far as them being members (besides Agent Schmuckatelli, of course); there either aren't any or there is a company policy about publicly 'coming-out' on this type of forum; else you'd think we would have seen someone do so by now. Just my 1 cent.

Funny that the thought of ATF monitoring bothers so many folks here, when the recent domestic spying and Felons & Guns threads got so many responses of "you've got nothing to worry about if you have nothing to hide" and "I have no problem with felons losing their gun rights for life."

Hmmm.

through my super duper uber tactical ninja training i have learned how to make my comments cloaked from the eyes of JBT's.

i'm so tactical it hurts

Having been a former criminal defense attorney, and counting among my friend federal Agents, Federal prosecutors, defense lawyers and tohers involved in the CJA, I can assure all you good folks on this Board that the governemtn has no interest in 99.9% of you. Thats the voice of experieince, as opposed to the usual rhetoric derived from tinfoil hat internet sites still whinging about Rosenfeld and the New Deal. Comparing the USA of A to East Germany is one of the silliest comparisons I have ever seen.

Citation please.
