what do you put your handguns in ???

must be a typo... maybe $850.00... the smaller Stack On add on top boxes cost more than $85.00 now...

No typo. I paid $80 for the safe at either Walmart or Gander mtn., I can't remember which, and about 5 bucks for the board. This is about 4 years ago or so. I've seen the safe at G.M. for around $100. It isn't a true safe in the same regard as JohnPaul's pictured above. I like his better ;) , but I can get my wife to tolerate only so much expense towards my gun stuff.

I have a 28-30 gun Rifle safe, that is plumb full. I have shleves on shelves, the door is full as well. I started taking guns out and hiding them all over the house. I think I'm going to fortify my "gun room" it's concrete on 3 sides, so "ill need to put in a steel door, and I'm thinking about 7/8 sheeting and fire rock for the remaining wall, maybe stucco(sounds crazy, but it's hell on tools) I just don't have the money for a vault door.

Right now my plinking pistol and the box from my PT140 are tucked away in a secure spot. I ran a gun lock through the plastic handles for a bit more security, and locked them to the shelving in my closet. Not really secure. Now that I have a more permanent apartment, I really need to look into getting a somewhat permanent safe installed.

My carry pistol (PT140) stays on my belt. Its box has become my spare ammo box - Taurus was too cheap to actually glue down the foam in the box, so I was able to remove it easily and toss in my spare .22/.40 rounds.

I'm building a hidden safe in the wall, hope to make it look like a normal wall, I will post pictures when its done:D

Luvsasmith, I'm considering that as well, it will come down to cost. My ceiling was the initial problem, but it as a tile floor, so we're good there. I live out in the boonies, and someone is home 99.99% of the time, so I may just consider another safe, and go from there.

i made this rack myself out of a couple pieces of pine some thin foam padding and some felt

jlj676: That looks to be one of those Sentry fire safes or something similar.

I would recommend buying a small humidity meter (can get one in the reptile section at the pet store for a few bucks) and loading that thing with desiccant. I bought one for pistol storage; I think the insulation is saturated with water (to make it last longer in a fire). The humidity inside the safe is very hard to keep at acceptable levels. These things are not good for gun storage - or anything that needs a dry environment for that matter.

I have two dishes of very serious desiccant inside mine (the blue stuff in the glass dishes in the picture - that's A TON of desiccant for such a small space), and they need to be recharged in the oven about once a month or so.
I need to get a real gun safe!!

Right now, I've got an American Security gun safe, but I'm building a cabin where I've just finished an in-ground vault and the foundation. Actually, the vault is within a storm shelter that is nothing but thick concrete reinforced with rebar. I need to snap some pictures.

thanks for the tip dbl bbl daryl I have the small one that came with the safe but I also have a large one I got from the sporting goods store I'll be putting that in there too.

I'm guessing you actually meant the desiccant pack that came with the safe (forgive me if I am wrong); Make sure to get a meter or gauge also.
I have about 2 cups (maybe 300-400g ??) of this stuff: [Drierite] in there (it can hold almost 15% of its weight in water). It holds the humidity at about 30% until it starts to get full, then the humidity will climb to about 50% over the course of a couple of weeks.
I'm not sure if this will work, but I also have a piece of carbon steel in there to sort of be the "canary in the coal mine", by showing rust before any guns, letting me know if there's a problem.
Seriously - get some kind of gauge and a lot of a desiccant that you can recharge.

yes the desicant pack that came with the safe, the large one I bought is rechargable it is made by remington I will definetly get a meter I dont want any rust:confused::confused: dicks sporting goods has a small electric humidifier I wonder if there is a battery operated one that is just a affective
