What do you consider enough ammo per gun?

I like to have at least 200 Rounds of SD ammo for each gun, Plus 300 or more of target ammo, for the guns i use most frequently..

ammo

hand guns 500, assault 1000, deer 100, twent-two 1000 cheap plus 300 stingers
shotgun hunting 200, shotgun defense 100. surplus military 1000.
I'm plan to have more after this last run is over.

I've got a couple bricks of .22lr, a case of target loads for my shotguns, maybe the same in pheasant loads. For my rifles, only a box or two each. I've about 150 rounds for my .41 mag, maybe 100 for the .357. I've only got maybe 20 or so rounds of .380 so I won't be shooting either of those guns until I can buy some FMJ range rounds. I'm not in any hurry though, I shoot my guns other than for hunting, only 2-3 times each year, usually in the summer. I'm not a range rat, I bought my guns for hunting or SD only.

If I were to start shooting more, I'd definitely reload.

I do a continual stocking up every pay check. I try to buy 100 to 300 rounds every 2 weeks. My plan is eventually to have 1000 rounds for each gun I own other than .22LR I want to have around 5000 rounds of that. It is a general fun round for plinking and taking small game. .22LR may be the most versatlie ammunition there is.

I buy within my means every 2 weeks. For me I see no need to go out and buy 1000 to 5000 rounds at a time.

I tend to buy ammo in relatively large quantities when I can find it for a decent price.

Generally have 500 to 1000 rounds, or more, on hand for each centerfire caliber I own and 2500 plus rounds of .22 lr.

Personally I dont think ill ever feel like i have enough ammunition, i buy as i find it, and shoot atleast once a week at the range. Enough is never enough when it comes to ammunition.

i got 500 rounds of 30.06. did have around 500 rounds of 12 gauge #6 shot but down to like 50 but will restock. around 100 rounds of 9mm. 1000 .22s 100 .25acp and 50 .38 spl. 50 8mm mauser 10 .300 mag (just revieved it for christams had to go out and shoot it a couple hundred times :)) . heres my plans for ammo 1000 rounds of 30.06 (once i get it stocked up no shooting this) 1000 rounds .30 carbine. 10 thousand .22 lr. 500 12 gauge #6s (dont see the point of buckshot for home defence dead is dead i dont care how we get there.) 500 9mm fmj 50 silver glacier 9mm and 100 hollowpoint. 200 rounds of .25 100 rounds of .300 mag and 200 sellier and bellot 8mm 196 grain soft points. once i get it built up to that i want let it get bellow it again.

When I have to move my ammo shelves to the ground floor, or garage or basement, due to weight - then I may have enough.

At present I am using more than I am finding available; components included. I invested in "semi-semi-precious metals" a while back (meaning lead and brass) before prices started going berserk. Unfortunately, my nice $12.95 a box 10mm is running lower, and none to be found up here at any price recently; last I saw was around $32 a box for Blazer aluminum in 10mm, and even that is long gone.

I personally like numbers in the thousands per handgun cartridge when looking at my ammo shelves. Many more in .22lr. Sadly most of my handgun cartridges are running in the hundreds these days. (Again, also considering reloading component supplies.)

I may just have to "tool up" my garage and start making gun powder myself! Not really something that I even want to consider.

For my Ruger 10/22:
3500 rounds of CCI velocitor ammo (SD),
2000 rounds of CCI MiniMag ammo (hunting).

For my Ruger 454 Casull Magnum:
100 rounds of Winchester Medium Velocity HP factory ammo (SD)

reloading components for targets: 220 cases/1500 primers-bullets-powder

reloading components for SHTF: 1000 virgin cases/11,000 primers-bullets-powder

If they ever stopped making it, i got enough. But since they keep on making it, i'm gonna get some more. It's like Doritos.

I was just watchin the American Experience, and the gentlemen defending the Alamo were requested to "bring a rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition".

Seems a little sparse to me. Odds weren't favorable, ~200 vs 2600.

Wow, some of these answers explain why there's an ammo shortage.

For each gun, I'd say 1000 AR rounds, 500 handgun, 250 shotgun & rifle and 2000 22's. But that's just a dream number and this is not a plan for Mad Max armageddon.

My ammo supply seems to drop by 100 per gun everytime I go shooting and I can't find any for sale, so I have to temporarily retire some guns from range use.

8 bazillion. :)

really it is about how much you shoot, how much you store, and what you think the price of ammo is going to be down the road.

Rounds On Hand

I have at least 250 rounds on hand for each cal. handgun I own in both of my homes. I have 650 rounds of .223 and about 650 rounds of 7.62x39 for each of my longarms. I never want to find myself short. Also 259 of .45 & 250 of .38 +P G.

I try to at least keep enough SD ammo in a given caliber to fully load the gun and all the mags/speedloaders I have for it. This usually translates to at least one 50 round box for each semi and at least one 20 round box for each revolver, though a couple revolvers require 50 round boxes. As far as the amount of non-SD ammo I keep on hand, that fluctuates with my shooting habits, finances, and lately supply available.

i only have enough ammo per gun to carry. I got a bandolier holding 75rounds of surplus 7.62x51, a bookbag with 50 shells of rem00buck,assorted flare, slug, bird shells, and three extra 16round clips(10rounds loaded in each) of gold dot 9mm +p hollowpoints. I also have 100 rounds of standard 9mm. I don't believe in owning more ammo than i can carry, this ammo stays untouched or the stock is rotated when i need to use it.

Money is an obstacle for me. I do not have as many or as expensive guns as many do.

I had a bad feeling about the future last summer so I bought 5,000 rounds of .22 LR. I also have 500 rounds of .38 and 500 of .22 mag.

I am holding that and only shooting what I can now buy.

Jeff Cooper wrote an essay titled "Ballistic Wampum." It predicted the value of ammo when it is banned. Good read.
