What do you consider enough ammo per gun?

What do you consider enough ammo for each gun you have? Do you have more for calibers that you have more of, or just a set amount per gun?

It all depends on many factors doesn't it...

So, if you're asking how many rounds is good to have, in regards to stocking at home.

Factors being what and how much you shoot. So, if you shoot say 1000 rounds per quarter (4 months) or 250 a month then you need at least that right. But if you shoot say 1 time per month and say you put down range 100 rounds (or 2 boxes).

All in all, it all depends on how much you want to spend doesn't it.

They're not going to stop making ammo - it's tough to get some right now because everyone is buying it up.

If your worried try reloading. You can make as many as you want :) and can afford.

I keep a minimum of 250 rounds of self defense ammo per side-arm and HD shotgun, 500 rounds per firearm per caliber (i.e.: 2 9mms= 1000 rounds) of standard FMJ, 1000 rounds of my reloads per firearm per caliber for general practice and hunting.
I also store enough raw metal(s) for casting, over-the-counter bullets, powder, primers, and cases for all to last 5 years just in case the SHTF.

All ammo, powder, and primers along with any chemicals are stored separately according to component in separate safes in different locations for obvious safety reasons. Everything is stored and kept in accordance to local, state and federal regulation.

What I like to have...

is at least 100 rounds per gun. And for most of my guns, I manage that.

Considering I reload for nearly 30 diferent rifle and handgun calibers, in some cases, I have a few more than that.:D

I keep 1000 rds of ammo for pistols and my .223, and 100 or so for my hunting rifles. I also have a couple hundred shotgun shells around.

At least a 1,000 rounds per gun, I would keep more but it is hard for me to store large amounts properly for long periods

200 rounds per gun of SD stuff. Like most here I have a lot of different calibers....so that's a lot of ammo.:)

4k-6k for each handgun

500-1k for each rifle that I've found the best recipe

250-500 for each rifle that I'm still experimenting

200-500 for each shotgun

5k-10k for all .22 rifles and pistols.

My goal is 1K per firearm. I don't seem to be making it, though. I seem to average closer to 1K per caliber, and I have many calibers for which I have multiple firearms.

I'll get there, though. Got a self-imposed embargo on buying more guns right now.

250 per caliber is about right for me, and 4 to 5 times that amount per caliber in powder primers and bullets.

I reload so I need to have about 3-4 pounds of Unique, 1+ pounds of IMR 4350, 1+ pounds of 296 and 2400. Primers I need to have at least 10k to feel comfortable. Bullets 1,500 minimum for .357 and .44. The 30-06 I need about 500 bullets on hand. The rifle brass I have about 450, .44 and 357 less than 1,000 each. The other .44 I shoot lead in and have 1,500 or so. Any brass that shows any issues just gets tossed so exact quantities I'm not positive of.

In another 6 months I'll be down on everything because I won't buy at these prices. If you learn to reload you'll be able to have plenty of ammo. It's easy to do you just have to be meticulous and safe. The beauty is you don't worry about a set amount of ammo because you have so much of everything it's not something to be concerned about.

I try to keep atleast 100 rounds per handgun caliber on hand at home. I like to keep more, but I still like to shoot and ammo is harder to come by, as everyone knows. I just started reloading again, so I am hoping my stocks will be full soon. I have all the components, just not the time/drive to get it all reloaded.

I prefer to keep a "standing reserve" of about 200 rounds of designated self-defense ammo for each pistol I own plus another 1,000 rounds of practice/plinking ammo.

Due to cost I'm typically way below that on rifle ammo but I try to keep about 200 rounds for each caliber as a minimum.

Of course .22LR is like chocolate coated coffee beans, there is just never enough, so I keep quite a bit more of that for range plinking.

Who knows what is going to happen with the ammo supply? I bought six cases of 9mm Winchester White Box at $5 a box about 8 years ago when there was a grand opening sales at an Oshman's Sporting Goods. I thought I would never go through that much ammo. Boy was I sad when I ran out about 3 years ago and had to pay almost 50% more. Current prices are almost double what I paid back then, and I certainly don't chalk that up to inflation. 100 packs of WWb were still widely available in Wally World a few years back. I guess thats woulda, shoulda, coulda now.

I don't want to be thought of as an ammo hog, but I will buy everything I can when I find it at a reasonable price. Guns without ammo are just expensive paper weights! I'd like to have at least 5,000 rounds each of 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 acp. I'd like to have 10,000 of .22 LR. This should last me a good long while... I hope!

I tend to buy in bulk as the ammo isn't going to go bad, but for fighting purposes you don't need to keep more than a 100 rounds or so of working ammo around. That will get you through just about any realistic encounter these days.
