What do you consider a fully stocked ammo supply?

Generally speaking, my *goal*, which I haven't reached yet, is:

Long guns:
--For every hunting, limited-purpose, or vague-purpose centerfire long gun (excluding strictly collectibles and strictly fun plinkers, for which there's no minimum), 40 to 120 rounds each....except shotguns, where I want to have about 50 12 ga turkey loads, 300 of various birdshot from 2 to 8 (divided between both 12 and 20 ga), and about 100 triple ot buck 12 ga for home defense.
--.22lr, lots and lots - haven't decided, but over 2500 - various but mostly CCI Velocitors
--.22 mag, about 1,500
--for the one centerfire that's a WROL rifle (yet to be acquired 6.5 grendel AR15), I'm shooting for stockpiling at least 1,000 rounds - I don't get overly crazy on this stuff.
--backup WROL rifle in .357 mag, 500 rounds

Handguns:
Haven't decided yet. I don't keep a lot of handgun ammo, even though I should. I'm just not nearly as enamoured with them as rifles. I guess I'd want around 500 9x19, 250 10mm auto, 100 .45 colt, and 40 .454 casull. That's it - I don't do any other handgun chamberings anymore, though I might add .22 TCM, in which case keep maybe 100 of them.

As I said, if I have to defend my family or property, the target rounds would probably suffice. Right? So let me ask you this. How do you divide up your ammo supply? 50/50 in target/defense? 75/25? 90/10? Target's cheaper so that's why I was stocking up on it, but is that perhaps not the smart thing to do? I'm not trying to overthink it, just looking for advice/opinions. Thanks.

to answer the OP's questions more squarely its really an opinion but mine is based on what I can afford and reasonably store with my modest income and small home. Stocking up on target ammo is a smart thing to do because it does suffice and one needs to practice anyways or it wont matter what you have if you don't. How much of it you can securely store and afford is personal but once you meet your minimum then it makes sense to invest in premium ammo supply as much as you desire. For me its a 1000 rds min for my SD pistol and rifle. I don't worry about the other guns but by all means I have no upper limit on buying more than the minimum and do throw in a box of premium rounds now and then. I have no idea what my ratio is except that its low cause I don't think that premium ammo in itself is what I'll really need to survive on if it came to that. IMO....

Stock up on "target" ammo is a cheap alternative? Except 12 ga I don't think any of my target ammo is significantly cheaper than defensive loads and some is more. Plinking, such as WWB, is cheaper and will suffice, but it certainly isn't "target" in my book.
All my defensive firearms of a type use the same ammunition. For instance I have my 9mm Glock and a couple 9mm hipoints for whoever forgets theirs. Beggars can't be choosers!
All shotguns are 12ga. Most are single shots with considerably longer lives than I, but beggars can't be choosers there either.
I don't have any extra rifles to go around. My wife doesn't have a rifle.
If I am passing out guns to the unprepared it will be for a defensive situation. I'm not going to need a lot of rifles.

My target ammo is significantly cheaper than factory defensive - I reload and cast my own bullets. Would a bare lead 124 grain LRN stepping out at 1100 FPS be effective for SD? Better than harsh language, I'd have to surmise. Bare lead was kind of the choice for pistol bullets for quite a long time...One thing I don't do is carry reloads, personal choice. :) If I had to, I'm sure they would do fine.

I just keep one bullet in my front pocket. J/K :D

I would say the right answer would depend on how many people are in your family and then try to maintain a minimum of 1k to 2k for each caliber and each firearm.

If you have 5 members in the family that will all have an AR, you need 5 AR`s and somewhere in the neighborhood of 5k to 10k rounds minimum.

Just be careful putting on the internet just how much you do have, Big Brother could be watching.:p

we should only be allowed to have maybe 25-50 rounds of each. remember the president said a few months ago that mass-shootings are happening because we allow people to “stack up a bunch of ammunition in their houses.”

I don't want to be the one to cause shootings, so I will be down-sizing my stash soon

I shoot a few hundred rounds a week. I keep the supply shelves on my reloading bench full, but I generally don't have a whole lot of cartridges already made up except for when I run .38s, .45s, and .223s in volume on a progressive. I could have a few thousand of each, or none.

There are 7,000 grains in a pound, and in addition to my standbys I try to keep a wide variety of powders on hand. Store bought cast bullets come in boxes of 500, and I keep a large (at least two boxes) stock of those (much less of the fancy bullets for rifles). I'll buy bulk 62gr, .223s as well.

Otherwise I usually shoot what I make pretty quickly, and I have about a 2 pound of powder a week habit, but it could be more or less depending on the time of year.

I wonder if doing drugs is cheaper?:D

I've never stored large quantities of ammunition I do not plan on shooting. I've never felt the need.

1000 rounds of .223
1000 rounds of 7.62x39
500 rounds of .308
1000 rounds of cheap 9mm; 100 rounds of good defensive ammo
One box of 500 .22LR
100 rounds of 40
200 rounds of 10mm
300 rounds of 45
50 rounds of 380
50 rounds of 30-06
1000 rounds of various 12ga ammo

Just a dime brick, Louie, I need you to make me well, man. Just a little brick of 22lr, that's all I need. I got the hundred right here.

Yeah me too.
If I live long enough to use up all my reloading compenents it will be a real
challenge.:D
