what do you buy rifles for?

Same as Hal but also pride of ownership. A facination as to how different rifle work. Besides they are a good investment. (yea right)

To shoot stuff past 100yds. Some because of historical value and interest, though those still get used to shoot stuff past 100yds. Sometimes even to shoot stuff around 50 yds.

In addition to home defense (which I take to be all kinds of self defense), you can thow in defense of your community, state and republic as well.

I am fascinated by the mechanicals and aesthetics when it comes to rifles of all types. Rifles are just cool mechanical devices that have their own individual allure and character which makes them a fun (and expensive) item to collect.

No doubt, I like to use them for various reasons such as target shooting, hunting and God forbid a possible line of defense, however, it's the mechanical and collectibility aspects that really interests me the most.

kgs.

To shoot, to hunt, to play and to learn.

Although I shoot a lot more shotgun than rifle, I have owned many more rifles. They fascinate me.

PJR , what do you shoot more shotguns at , hunting or target ? i , too , have more rifles than shotguns , but shoot shotguns a lot more than i ever do rifles. mostly at clay targets.

Blooch, in addition to your listing, you left out "Collecting," and "I just like 'em all!"

Afterall, the word "need," is not in the lexicon. The words "I just gotta have it 'cause I want it," are.

Far Away.................

To be able to hit targets at distances that most people don't even dream of being a reality........
It's a very self satisfying accomplishment, and like Gary...there are way too many of us, that don't know which end of the tube a round comes out of....and as a country, WE men should be ashamed, to have let this most precious and valuable freedom erode away......
And there's the men and boys, and the difference is only between their toys.......i.e.......the COST!!!!!!!!!

That's what my wife asks me. :)

Thank goodness she likes to shoot handguns.

I buy them because I can,so far. I like target shooting. I like cleaning them,admiring them,possessing them.

Handguns are great, but they don't do me much good at 150 yards.
Neither do rifles,truth be told.;)

blooch

A few thousand clay targets each year. Half of them are trap with the other half split between skeet and sporting. Upland hunting every fall, a slug deer hunt and waterfowl occasionally. There are more shotguns currently in the safe but over the years I have owned many rifles.

I went through a period when I bought, sold and traded rifles. I would buy one, take it apart, learn about it, develop a good handload and most often sell it. I've owned all of the major brands and some obscure ones. Now I'm down to a .22, .223 Remington and a .270 Winchester.

As reasonable a price as I can find.;) or,

maybe to shoot once in a while?

Ok. Seriously. I am a lousy shot with anything that I have to hold against my shoulder.
I enjoy the challange of trying to shoot a rifle as well as I do (did?) a handgun.

The rifle is the queen of all weapons. In the hands of a good man not much else is needed to control his suroundings for just about as far as he can see.The rifle is the poor man's symbol of freedom. As long as I have a good accurate and reliable rifle in my hands I am free!

Because a bayonet looks silly attached to a pistol :)

I own rifles for hunting, plinking, home defense, and target shooting. Also because I am a male between the ages of 18 and 45 and am therefore in the general militia described in the 2nd amendment. It is our duty to be armed!

The number one reason I own rifles: They are hoot to shoot!!!

Target shooting (or in my case that is the same as plinking) and in case we the citizens ever have to take up arms against whomever.
