Follow up, just in case you are interested.....

I wound up keeping it and killed a couple deer this year with it. Mostly with the Hornady reduced recoil loads (30/06 level) but some in shorter ranges with the Remington reduced recoil loads (they come down to 308 level). Shoots like a DREAM, as one might expect. Even full power 180 grain loads I shoot at the range are manageable - can't really tell the difference between those and 30/06 loads really.

That rifle is about as specialized as a Lotus Seven or an adze. If you plan on doing what it's set up for (long range target shooting) it would be slick as grease.

If you try to use it for anything else, like hunting, you'll find it's heavy, long, LOUD and a lot more powerful than you need for deer in Alabama. It's too bad you passed on getting the builder to build you what you wanted, I'd love to own a light weight 308 built with that level of quality.

J you did good keeping it. Your wife was probably stoked more than you know that you harvested some deer with the rifle she got you. As you found , you can load it down but still maintain the extr HP if you need it for some other hunt.

I shoot some full-house 300 wm and 358 win loads out of a couple of my rifles--and I've used witt machine and Khantrol brakes on them--and in my experience the Khantrol is THE brake for the big 30's--especially their hex-mod.

That is awesome :)

What Vividia said. If my wife bought me a rifle like that, there is nothing on this earth that would make me part with it. You sir, are a lucky man!

And I would hunt with it even if all there was to hunt with it was rabbits.:D

I would get into the 1000 yard target shooting and not turn back!

Way too much for a hunting rifle and all the knocking around they get.

As others have noted, Bambi hunting with a 300 wm is vast overkill.

30-06 is too much though my dad did it when I was a kid as that was all he had (intended for moose and you always had a chance of nasty face off with a Grizzly

Load up a cast 180 gr. flat point bullet over 34 grs. 4895 with some dacron filler.

You have a 200 yard deer load that will penetrate a deer from stem to stern. No recoil, no painful noise.

Just scrub the muzzle brake very good after each range session.

Any idea what the twist rate is on the barrel. The slower the better.
