What did everyone think of the 60 minutes segment???

Rodriguez missed the first two shots, not because his scope was not adjusted correctly, but because he did not compensate for the offset of the scope. His muzzle was below the wall that he was deployed behind. The first two rounds struck the wall directly in front of him. After the second shot his spotter realized what was happening and told him to lift his muzzle. As an aside the lady being held hostage had been taken hostage twice before at the same bank during attempted robberies.

That is a good explination!

That is the only way Rodriguez missing would make sense. I wish I could have seen the segment, but I had other commitments. Thanks for the post here.

AZTrooper

That makes more sense. CBS didn't do a very good job. They made it sound like he just missed and, er, kept at it until he got it right.

Sigh, to have well researched, well editied, concientious, honest, neutral, reporting. If pigs had wings....

Thanks AZ Trooper. That explains a lot. Personally I was wondering aobut the "scope out of adjustment" statement. I mean most of us do not change the settings on a scope, we just hold either over or under depending on the range.

No "stick time" I'M TAKING DEEP, CLEANSING BREATHS!

As was said in the above posts We don't know all of the facts just the ones CBS felt we should know. My partner met Rodriguez last weekend at a police marksmen supposium. AZtrooper is correct. Rodriguez did shoot the wall in front of him twice (scope over barrel clearance). My partner was very impressed with Rodriguez.

Clint was very entertaining and truthful. I would love to go to any school at thunder ranch!

Even used the tape for Roll Call this morning.

I also saw the segment, it was interesting, but like any media presentation, it swings to the anti-gun flavor. One thing, the reporter did not get Rodrigues and Clint to agree his way. "Sometimes you have to take a life to save a life", these words probably scares the anti-gunners and criminals a like.2 cents M33

They need to get all P.C. with the media by saying snipers are needed "to get right wing redneck gunowners" :)

Battler.

It was a reasonably balanced presentation. If CBS had wanted to do a hatchet job they would have focused in on the woman hostage that was shot. Dramatic footage of the victims funeral followed by interviews with family and co-workers followed by hounding the officer who did the shooting and his department. They would intersperse these graphic images with the quote from Smith about some people needing to be shot. Now that would be a hatchet job.

I didn't think it was too bad of a story. Hard to believe that the one sniper ran half a mile, set up his rig and then fired a mortal head shot. Even if a guy is in good shape, I would think that it would be hard to control your breathing after a sprint like that, plus all the adrenaline that must have been flowing at the time. He must be one cool cucumber to be able to set up his target and get off a shot like he did under those circumstances.

kgs.

I thought that it was an unusually balanced story coming from the mainstream media, as they could have focused on the "mistakes" that were made in the deployments discussed. I did notice that the reporter seemed to be very uncomfortable while interviewing Clint Smith, perhaps because he was armed at the time? Just my thoughts...

yeah, but how many agencies will toss 2500 bucks worth of rifle and glass in a 20-dollar Wallyworld plastic case (SEEN it done!!!)?

The trunk of a cruiser during routine patrol is not the healthiest environment. A lot of times, the guys buying the equipment don't have a clue.

As to S/O control, I think the rifleman should have some independant control. Imagine hearing "I could have taken the shot when the suspect started stabbing the victims, but I had to give control the intel, get a clearance, then get it confirmed. That's why your daughter won't be coming home from the library today." Some flexibility must be granted to the guy behind the glass.
