What Can We Do Realistically?

"It is easy to dismiss 'the gun lobby'; it's a lot harder to dismiss 80 million plus unhappy voters!"

MustangSally, I would be willing to bet that there's 40 to 60 million of those potential unhappy voters who won't realize that they're unhappy until it's too late. My evidence is only anecdotal: working the gun shows for candidates and talking to people at the gun range. Get a dozen shooters in a conversation at the range and, when the subject turns to politics, six just walk away. And the others can't agree on whether or not Clinton is a good president. There are so many union members who've been hoodwinked by their leadership to vote Clinton/Gore that they can't see their noses in front of their faces.

George,
I'll provide airborne support. <if I can remember how to pack my chute>

On a serious note, WE NEED TO GET THE POINT ACROSS TO GUN OWNERS.... VOTE and write your congressmen. Not once, not twice, but over and over and over again.

How many of you out there have a copy of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights? How many of you out there have read any books on the history of the RKBA's? How many of you out there have ever responded to a column in your local newspaper? How many of you out there asked a non-shooting friend to come to the range with you? How many of you out there have ever thought that the current flap about the Second Amendment is merely a warmup to the really big fight over freedom of speech (hate speech is bad, and campaign contributions are a threat), freedom of assembly (membership in militias, etc.), and freedom of religion (speaking before a small southern fundamentalist college).

What we must understand is the fight over the Second Amendment is merely the first shot in a long war. There are people in our society who think our Bill is Rights is a bit radical (Bill Clinton, for example). The volume must be turned up on ALL infringements of the Bill of Rights, not just the Second Amendment. To that end the gun toting community would be well advised to become part of other organizations not focused on the Second Amendment. Emphasize to the most people possible that everyone is at risk from Fascists.
