what caliber did ya use on first whitetail

yesterday

How about a .32 Remington, Model 81? It seems like yesterday, but I guess it was more like 40 years ago. It had belonged to my Dad's brother who joined the Canadian RAF to be a pilot and get into the war. He was killed in November 1941. I used it from 1966 until 1985, and it has been parked since then, when I started using my Dad's sporterized '03.

first whitetailcaliber

I took my first (and several more after) with a Marlin Model 336c .30-30.
I really love this gun, have since moved on to bolt actions, but still have a soft spot for the old .30-30s.

Now that ammo manufactuers are making the 'Leverevolution' lines of ammo, they are getting some impressive ballistics.

Interarms Mark X in 243win, My own handloads 100gr nosler partition over IMR 4350.~200 yards across a wheatfield my dad sitting beside me.I used a fallen log for a rest. I fired the dear fell in it's tracks. It was about a year old button buck we could still see faint spots when we got close.
I still remember dad askin' "where'd ya hit it" as we walked to it I said "about 2inches behind it's elbow" and sure enough thats where the entry wound was.

That was 26 years ago just before I turned 17,I remeber it like yesterday.

.36 cal. flintlock rifle made by one of my ancestors in the mid 1700's.

It and 5 others were given to the Smithsonian Institute around 20 yrs. ago.

Marlin 336 Lever action in 30-30 Win. - 150 gr Remington Core-lokt soft-point over Accurate Arms 2520. One shot dropped a large doe in her tracks. The smile on my face lasted for days!
:D

My uncle's Sako in .222. A patient doe at about 25 yards (at most). He scowled as I aimed and aimed and aimed and he finally said, "Damn it, shoot the ol' bitch!" So, into the white spot.

first 3 were with a Win 94 in .30-30
then I got one with a .410 and several with 12 gauge. There were also a few taken with .22lr to feed a hungry family.

1st. deer

I shot my 1st deer (Calif. blacktail) on my 8th. deer season with a 7mm Mag. I started hunting when I was 14 with a British .303, upgraded to a Browning semi auto .308, that one was stolen. Replaced it with a Browning bolt action 7mm Rem. Mag.
1st deer was taken while walking along a logging road that was being heavily road hunted by people in thier vehicles. A truck load of hunters had just gone by. I almost overlooked him myself. All I could see at first was his feet, he was standing partially obscured by a tree. Only about 35 yards away. I had to use my binoculars to see his antlers through the branches. He was downhill from me. I shot him right between the shoulder blades. The bullet shattered his spine but fragmented and didn't penatrate well. He went down but was still alive. I put one though the back of his neck, at the base of his skull. It left a baseball size hole in the front of his throat, lights out.
I learned a valuable lesson, Since then I never drive around looking for deer. I've noticed that people drive by a lot more deer than they see.
