What auto-pistol should I get my wife?

The recoil reducer replaces exactly the guide rod. It is filled with mercury and dampens the "shock" in both directions. Really helps with second shot. Cost around $75, and well worth it (I have them on four guns). I bought mine from http://www.johnqs.com/harrts.html.

The trigger job was hand smoothing of around 28 surfaces by a very fine elderly Master Gunsmith (who dosen't do any work for the public, so I can't tell you his name). The result is a butter smooth trigger, even with the same hammer spring. The pull was reduced by about 2 1/2 pounds by hand honing of the surfaces only. You can get those jobs for around $125. John Q will do it, but is backed up. Be sure to only use someone with LOTS of Sig experience.

The slide on the 229 is made here in the USA by Ruger on their CNC machines and is solid Stainless, covered with a wonderful black nitrate finish which matches the frame. It is about one ounce heavier, and very slightly wider. Sig wanted the new 40 and 357 models to have the solid slide, and then made the 9mm caliber also. The 228 slide is folded steel and made in Germany. I wouldn't worry about durability though. The M11, as the US Army model 228 is known, won out over all contenders as the (compact/concealed/small hand) carry 9mm official arm. You can go to their site for more info. http://www.sigarms.com/

Hope this answers your questions.

Well you might save some money (like that ever really happens ) and get the USP Ported or get a second USP that has been ported.
Might even go proted and .45Super

Like others, I recommend the following:

Sig P226 9mm
Sig P228
Beretta Elite or Border Marshall 9mm
CZ-75B

I'd also strongly recommend trying the gun even if she doesn't want to. A gun may handle okay in the store but she may find something she doesn't like upon firing it. I had a POS Rossi snub .357 that felt okay but it cut my trigger finger upon firing. Good luck.

Thanks for the explanations and suggestions.

Again, my wife will DEFINATELY handle this gun and make every effort to fire one before purchase (assuming we can find one to rent).

She just expects me to do all the research and get her down to two or three to try with their pro's and con's already identified and their pricing already settled so she can make a final choice.

Thanks everyone!

J.T.

Denfoote, I have to ask: "What are you thinking?!?", recommending a Ruger when your tagline says boycott S&W? Ruger's sellout was far more egregious and sinister than S&W's. S&W look like saints compared to urging Congress to pass unconstitutional magazine limit bans, which passed and are now law!
