What auto-pistol should I get my wife?

Ok guys, this isnt an entirely open ended question; I do have several criteria...

1. My wife has NO interest in going around and trying guns out at a range, she expects me to do this.
2. She wants a full size auto loader.
3. She wants something that shoots softer than my USP45f.
4. She wants a DA/SA pistol
5. She won't buy S&W
6. She hates the Glock Trigger
7. She wants hi-cap magazines
8. She wants easy to opperate controls
9. She wants a high-quality, high accuracy pistol
10. She wants it plus two hi-caps to price out under $1000 after tax and maybe a lighter trigger. $700 would be even better.
11. Her hands are as large as mine although not as strong. (she can fire my USP45f fine without her supporting hand coming off the gun)

Some things I am thinking....

A. Sig 226 9mm
B. HK USP9f
C. HK USP9c

But I am really open to suggestion for anything that fits my criteria.

thanks for the help!

Greetings, J.T. Sir; May I suggest the wonderful Sig-Sauer P228. :D This is a
perfectly balanced firearm which fires
the 9X19 (9m/m Luger) round. It has very
little recoil and muzzle flip, is highly
accurate, absolutely dependable, lightweight,
and will function in extreme conditions; such
as sub-zero weather. :) It is a DA/SA model
and can be found with (2) high capacity
magazines; for a price somewhere in the
neighborhood of $600.00. A quality piece
that she would treasure and behold; and
she would love you for a lifetime because
it's like having an extra insurance policy!!!

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, Life Member N.R.A.

Sorry J.T. but I didn't think of rule #2
for your criteria. Then if that is a must,
go for the Sig-Sauer P226 that you mentioned.
It has the same basic qualities; except for
balance. :D

My wife liked the Glock 19 because she could pull the slide back and chamber a round easier than a lot of autos she tried. Plus it fits her hand well. But when it comes to being able to hit the target, she likes my Beretta 92fs better. The 92 doesn't kick as hard either and limp wristing is not a factor with the 92. Plus, high caps are cheaper and seem to be more plentiful. Let us know which one you choose-Good Luck

FWIW, I know a gal who really likes the HK USP9 Compact, of which she's a proud owner. It seems to meet most of the listed criteria. It may not be "full size," exactly. But if the German police carry it, then I guess by definition it's the size of a standard service sidearm, which should be "full" enough.

OTOH, except for the non-Glock-trigger criterion, I'd certainly have suggested a Glock 19.

HTH.

I am thinking along the lines of a 9mm Beretta. The 9mm will give her that softer recoil and you can readily get full-capacity mags that won't break the bank. For someone that doesn't want to go around and try several, I assume she has limited experience. If that's the case, the available decocker/safety is perfect. She can drop the hammer on a live round with no risk of discharge, and when the Beretta safety is engaged, the trigger becomes disconnected from the rest of the firing mechanism so she won't have to do a full pull and drop the hammer to discover that the safety is still on. I don't know if you are going for new or used. On a new Beretta, you can retain most of the value on a later resale, if that ever comes up. If you get one used, you are sure to get all of your money back out of it, if not make a few bucks over the years by keeping some full-capacity mags with it. Let us know what you decide!

I second PreserveFreedom's pick. The Beretta is what came up in my mind after reading your list of criteria...

Good posts about the Beretta 92.

I don't know if other women shooters are similarly inclined, but my wife prefers handguns that are less rather than more muzzle-heavy. So, for her, the 92 Centurion would be the way to go. In keeping with the listed criteria, the Centurion retains the full-size frame of the standard 92.

How can you be an accurate judge of what your wife would like? You may be able to narrow the field, but to just pick a gun w/o her hands on input is a bit silly, in my mind. After all, you like the USP .45, she doesn't care for it as much.

Might I suggest a CZ-75 in addition to the Beretta?

I know you said "full-size", but, consider the Beretta .380s. Either the 84 or 85(forget which is 13rds), as it will have less recoil, and possibly more comfortable grip. The safety is also a decocker, but frame mounted like the 1911. There is a Browning version of it too, with a slide mounted(ala S&W) safety.

Either a Sig(P226, P228) or a Beretta 92. You can find full capactiy magazines for the Beretta anywhere. I think you can find themm for the Sigs too.

Beretta 92
Ruger p95
Sig 226

But I would really say that she should try them on first. You can never really tell until you play with the gun, if you will like it or not.

If your wife can't be bothered handling the gun before she buys it, what chance is there of her going down to the range to practice with it, and if she IS prepared to practice with it, why can't she take an hour out of her schedule to go down to the gun store. I just don't get it, choosing the gun is the part that takes the least effort. Buying a 600 dollar gun like this really isn't such a good idea.

Save your money until the desire matches the intent.

I'd agree with my colleagues who recommend the Sig P226 or P228 (although I prefer the p229 which I'm told comes in 9mm) and the Beretta 92 (my preference being the Italian Stainless variety; my first gun).

What I would add is the Walther P99. Wonderful gun. 16 round hi-caps are available, although expensive (around 100 bucks). Seems to fit all of your criteria. And it's recommended by Q-branch!

I personally like my husband's 9mm 92FS Berretta. I tried his 41 and 45 also, but liked the feel and accuracy better, as well as the safety features. My only problem is that the grip is a little too large for my hand. It's the only reason it's still his and not mine.:> Whereas she evidently doesn't have that problem, in my limited experience that'd be what I'd recommend.

How about a Browning BDM. They are a very good and accurate pistol. BDMs are give aways right now. Buy her one of these and a bunch of 10 round magazines ($14.95). For your anniversary buy her a high-capacity magazine $100. Then for Sweetest Day buy her a high-capacity magazine etc. Regards, Richard.

I think Ala Dan has it right the first time. When she eventually tries a Sig 228 or 229 I will bet she likes it. Just because a 226 is bigger does not mean it will perform better for her.
