What are these deer doing?

Caught.

I saw the same thing here in Massachusetts a few years ago and got it on film. Two does were on their hind legs and appeared to be boxing with their front legs.It must be a pecking order thing.

Does definately have a pecking order, and rear up to try to intimidate each other to gain it. If I remember correctly, it is rare that they actually fight.

The bucks are probably watching, and are hoping that they'll start kissing...:D

Does will fight over food or territory and it isn't that uncommon. They will use their front hooves like a boxer uses his fists. Its rather amusing to view.

Don't ever think they can't do damage with those hooves. We had a pet deer that decided a garden hose was a snake, and went on the attack. Left dents in the plastic...

Awesome picture. My camera usually only picks up squirrels.

I actually saw a bunch of does fighting just like this back in January. Was driving into Chattanooga through Chickamauga Battlefield (NW Corner of Georgia) and spotted a group of deer off in the distance. Next thing I knew one of the does was on her feet.

I turned to drive down as close as possible. Got about 150 yards away. And watched them for 40 minutes. Didn't see any bucks. But it was a large group of mature does (I assume all had been bred by that time) and yearling does.

There was clearly one dominant foe who was antagonizing the others. And yes, in addition to standing up like this picture they were also kicking with both front and hind legs.

Great Pic.!

Was in a tree stand about 15yrs ago and watched 5 doe come down a deer run one way while 3 other doe were traveling same trail in other direction. They met and after a few minutes of posturing, two larger does fought just as the OP'S pic. shows. Didn't last long at all. When they were done, all headed out the same direction. First and only time I've ever seen it.
