What are some good .22lr ammo companies?

I tested a lot of brands and many Eley's for my Target Pistols and rifles but every time I finish and prefer the CCI Pistol Match, hard to find but I can put 5 shots in the same hole at 25 yards with my S&W 41 and Morini CM22, also I use the same ammo for my Ruger 77-22 and at 100 yards the group is in 1/4 of an inch. No jams, no nothing.

I hate Remington ammo! And use Federal Bulk for plinking only with an AR-22

1/4 MOA at 100 yards!? Do you compete in smallbore benchrest matches with that thing? If you don't, then you should. One ragged hole at 100 yards with a .22LR (EVEN with an Anschutz) would be something to behold. I shot a roughly 1\4" 5-shot group with one of my .22LR at 50 yards (only once) and I was ecstatic.

Aguila match seems to give me best accuracy in various 22's.
Aguila is Mexican ammo. When you buy it you are supporting a country that has disarmed it's law abiding citizens and has pushed lawmakers here in the US to take steps to make gun ownership illegal. Please find ammo made in a more gun friendly country.;)

I'm supporting a company that has the best of modern equipment, uses Eley priming and their ammo has given me great results. Besides, if they are doing a job that Americans won't do, since apparently Federal and Remington can't be bothered to make decent .22, while staying in their own country isn't that a good thing? I suspect, but can't prove that PMC .22 is made in the same factory, I had great luck with their cheap stuff, at one time $90 a case. The bulk crap, generally you get what you pay for. That my gun shot PMC sidewinder as well as Wolf, I was surprised.

I won't buy Federal .22 out of spite, I once paid good money for a bunch of expensive target ammo and it was garbage. I'm sure it's great stuff, but once bitten...

"SK Jagd"

Lapua, makers of high-end .22 target ammo (among other things), bought SK Jagd in 1992. Lapua also owns/makes Wolf rimfire and the last time I looked it was made at the SK Jagd plant in the former East Germany. (The overall owner is the Nammo Group)

I always start ammo testing a .22 with the cheap 50-round boxes in case I get lucky and the gun loves the cheap stuff. I know most .22s are going to love the $15/box Lapua and Eley.

So I tried all the ammo that was at my local walmart. Winchester 555, Federal auti match, Federal lightning, CCI stingers, CCI minimags, Remington subsonics, and Remington bulk whatever you call it. So far we are up to 7 different choices. It really liked the subs, with tge federal automatch being a close second. But I will have to scope the mkII to find out what it is really capable of.

While I agree with your support to purchase American made products if you check your home and any store majority of what we purchase is made in other countries, now if I could find an equal brand(accuracy) to Aquila for my rifles made in USA I would certainly buy it, but there rifle match is as good as Wolf or any others I've tried, there 60gr sniper brand will shoot dime size groups @50 yards out of my Ruger 10/22. Not a huge fan of Mexico but love there ammo.:D

RWS Match is the best ammo I have shot. I never implied only buying American, only not buying from countries that are anti gun. I beleive the RWS stuff is made in Switzerland. PMC is South Korean. There are plenty of ammo brands higher quality than Aguila. The 60gr SS stuff is not even match ammo. I don't shoot federal rim fire ammo either. I do like Rem CBees for small game. CCI make some really good ammo as well. My favorite in the CCI line up is the "subsonic pre segmented hollow points"

I don't appreciate the comment about the mexicans doing jobs americns won't do. Keping buying that crap if you have no principles.

 I'm glad your making educated choices Joe.... I would suggest you take a trip down there to the factory just to make sure;) Have you next of kin let me know how that works out for you:D

THIS!!!

Much agreed. Also agreed to the CCI Blazer and Federal Bulk "value pack", I've heard good things about the champion stuff, but never used it. But with these two loads, I've had nothing short of epic groups and epic reliability. As far as the groups go, they're pretty much the "best of the worst". Very good for the ammo making them.

Thank you I will continue to buy as I wish and I really appreciate your maturity in allowing me to do so.;)

For informal target shooting, and plinking, I like Federal Automatch, Federal Bulk, and Winchester 555 pretty much in that order.

CCI SV, and Minmags, etc are a step up in both price and usually performance, but it depends on what YOUR gun likes.

Both of my .22s really like CCI SV. It is easy for me to get and cheap to buy if you can find the bricks of it.

I've found the federal auto match to work almost as well as Eley EPS black in my shelin equiped 10/22

300 rounds or 50....pretty easy choice for me.

My MKII shoots best with Green Tag or Eley. However, if you want to shoot "almost" as good for a fraction of the price, try this. Many of the match grade .22 rounds are wax coated. I coated the bullet heads of cheap CCI Blazer with carnuba auto wax and did some testing.

All of these targets are the same ammo, just coated with different things. The wax was the best. To date, best group was .900" 5 round group at 100 yards (would have been .500" without the flyer!).

By the way, this target was done by my 13 year old sone off a bipod and rear sand bag.

My MkII likes CCI Mini Mags. I'm definitely in the 'try 'em all out' camp, though, yours might have a different preference. I tried Velociters and got decent groups, mine also liked Stingers quite a bit as well. Get a sample from as many as you can and hit the range.

I have good fortune with Federal Bulk Packs,,,

All of my semi-auto pistols run this stuff very nicely,,,
I can't remember having a dud round with it.

I bought some Remington Golden Bullet bulk packs,,,
None of my semi's like this ammunition,,,
I get too many dud rounds per pack.

I have close to 20,000 rounds of some Remington Mil-Surp LRN,,,
This stuff leads up my semi's and revolvers too quickly,,,
But performs well in my bolt and single-shot rifles.

CCI standard Velocity is another brand I've had good experiences with,,,
It runs well in all my semi's, revolvers, and rifles.

And of course CCI MiniMags perform very well.

I know it's accepted knowledge that each .22 gun likes different ammunition,,,
But as far as accuracy goes that has not been my experience at all,,,
If the stuff goes off at all it seems to have the same accuracy.

Some brands run cleaner than the others do,,,
But the accuracy (group size) seems the same to me.

I run the Federal in almost all of my handguns,,,
The Remington Mil-Surp in my bolt rifles,,,
And the CCI MiniMags in my mouse-guns.

The Remington Golden Bullet sits on the shelf due to all the dud rounds.

This makes very good sense. In fact, if you buy blazer in 500rd bricks instead of the loose bulk packs, there IS wax on the bullets just like the SV and Green Tag! The bricked Blazer ammo is what i shoot out of my semi-auto guns and it works great with extremely good accuracy. Not Quite as good as SV or Green Tag but when I am plinking the difference is too small to notice.

I asked the 2010 Small Bore Prone Iron sight champ, Charles Kemp, a rookie question, basically like yours" What is the best ammunition" and he told me in no uncertain terms there was no such thing, that you have to test each brand and each lot in your rifle.

And I believe him.

Charles tests a lot of ammunition, his favorite that year, in his rifle, his best was one lot of Red Box Tennex. He said it shot a consistent ten shot group, at 100 yards, of 0.38". Which is amazing.

I have tested cheaper commercial stuff, ammunition like "Rem Match", Federal Lightning’s, etc, what shoots best in a low cost rifle depends on the low cost rifle. When you shoot good match ammunition in a cheap barrel you won't see much improvement in group size, but when you shoot good match ammunition in a good to match barrel, you will see smaller groups and it is noticeable.

I have chronographed the cheap stuff and match ammunition and you can see the consistency over the screens with match ammunition, the ES’s and SD’s are very low.

I shoot RWS, Tennex Black Box, Wolf, Lapua Midas Plus and have won matches with all of them.

You just have to test the stuff, just as Charles said.

Ditto. Red Box Tenex has been most accurate in my rifle as well, hands down. as well it should for $20/box.

My goal w/ the above was, what "cheap" ammo shoots good with some tweaking. I can spend less than a 20 round box of Red Tenex on 500 rounds of Blazer (w/ wax) and shoot pretty close.

Good is what shoots consistantly accurate in your firearm without jams. Some rifles and pistols like certain ammo. My High Standard Sprot King .22LR does not like Remington. I switched to Federal Premium with no problems.

Not Remmington...

AGREED!

Remington rimfire as of now a days is some of the worse- loose/ dirty/ unreliable crap you can buy! Some of their centerfire is crap too.

Stick with CCI, Eley, n Fiocchi for a very reliable rimfire:)
