I've got and H&R and Bersa, had 22/45's and Phoenix Arms HP22s. I've also been searching for a so called kit gun for camping, canoeing, hiking, etc.

If you can afford them any of the S&W kit guns are the way to go.

The H&R's are better than the Heritage's but both are basically throw away guns. The H&R's due to lack of parts and factory service, the Heritages because that's all they are intended to be. Shoot em till they drop and move on.

The HP22s are not accurate and reliability is questionable. Sometimes I kick myself for selling the one I had because it did fill that role but there are better options which I know own.

The Bersa I have is a serviceable gun. SA trigger sucks, groups are around 4" @ 50' and mine only likes MiniMags. But they are far better than the HP22s and more than likely the H&Rs and Heritages but only time will tell. Ask me again in 20,000 rounds.

Never cared for the Bearcats. Hard for me to hit a barn with.

A 4" Ruger 22/45 or a 22/45 with an aluminum barrel is a good choice and the most accurate (or should I say easiest to shoot accurately?) of the list but it's also but the biggest. So there's a trade off.

Cheapest I can recommend: The H&R but only in VG condition.
Small Semi award goes to the Bersa.
Best for impromptu hunting and best value is the 22/45.
Best overall the S&W's.

Don't get the Rough Rider. I have that exact 3.75 birdshead model. It feels great in the hand, but shoots like crap. It hits very high and the front sight is too short to correct for it. I don't like the gun very much anyway, but you really need an adjustable sighted RR with at least the 4+ inches barrel length.

You might want to add the Charter Pathfinder to your list. Cheap and light, but only 5 shots. Not sure how current Charter quality is though.

the OP mentioned supressor. walther p-22 is a small light great shooter. 160 bucks gets you a threaded barrel. if you are planning to supress eventually, get the walther, i've had about 3500 trouble free rounds through mine and it's light enough for my 5 yr old son. (dont worry guys i help him for safety reasons) walther sells a small form fitting laser for it too if you like them. interchangable backstraps

^1 on the Bersa Thunder 22,,,

I bought one last month and already have over 1,000 rounds through it,,,
So far it's performed flawlessly for me.
