What any gun collection should have?

Depends - you collecting for function - or for collecting?

Landmark (rifle) firearms that a collector should have:

Springfield M1903 --- The original 30.06 rifle - developed for military use. Fought plenty of wars - now often found in sporterized version. Watch out for low serial numbers.

Mosin Nagant - cheap fun - with a firearm that should be every bit as legendary as the 1903. Helped Russia win a number of wars!

Winchester Model 94 --- The gun that won the west. Get a pre '64 if you can. NO SCOPE!

Winchester Model 70 in .270 --- Jack O'Connor's favorite. Most folks say a pre-64 is better (I have a 1964 model. It's plenty accurate).

Winchester 9422. A fantastic, accurate, and collectible lever action rimfire.
(Field & Stream ranks the 10/22 higher --- I don't agree)

Dakota Model 76 ---- these rifles doubled in value over the last decade, alone. They're beautiful pieces of workmanship.

Non-rifles:

Field & Stream notes The Winchester Model 12 as a landmark model (I own one). I think an Ithaca model 37 in 16 gauge is an even better gun.

Colt 1911 - a fantastic, timeless, pistol.

I'm a fan of a functioning collection, there are a few guns that I wouldn't mind just keeping up on the wall for looks, but I'd rather be able to shoot everything I own.

I've got so far:

Savage FCXP3 - .300WM
Mossberg 464 - 30-30
Savage Springfield 64e - 12ga
Glock 22 - .40
S&W 340PD - .357
Ruger 10/22

I guess I kinda started this thread just to figure out what I want next :D

At least a half dozen 22 rimfire rifles. I have a Marlin model 60, a Rem. 552, and a CZ. So I need a few more.
At least one lever action. I have a Glenfield model 30 in 30-30
At least two bolt action centerfire rifles. I have an old JC Higgins husqvarna actioned 30.06, looking for something in 221 fireball
At least one handgun for protection. I have 3, 2 for cc and a rock island 45 for fun and home defense.
At least one hand gun for plinking. Don't have one but have my eye on a nice ruger.
At least one single action revolver for fun and / or hunting. Preferably a Ruger single action in .357.
At least one shotgun, preferably a pump.
And throw in a couple of military type rifles for the hell of it. I have a recently acquired Mosin Nagant, and may buy another. That should be enough for starters.

My idea of the "standard" collection is:

Browning BAR (any caliber)

Remington 870 12ga.

Marlin 336 30-30

Remington 700 (any caliber)

Ruger 10/22

22 pistol

Early Win. 52, either sporter or match. I see no one has included any American classic single shots...Win. high & low walls, Ballards, Sharps, 74', or Borchardt, Rem. rolling blocks, Provedence Tool Co. Martini match rifles.

My collection

my collection has a AR 15/22, Henery 22lr, Henery 44 mag lever, Rock River AR 15 223/5.56, 2 M-1 Carbines, a very old 22lr semi auto of unknown name or fame and a 20 gauge single shot shotgun. a a whole basket full of pistols. I buy and shoot what I like.

Ruger 77 MKII Target 308, Cooper 22 22-250 Varmint Extreme, Sako 75 7mm Rem Mag, Custom Mauser action 358 Win, Custom Varmint Ar-15, Henry Big Boy 357, Henry Goldenboy 22, Winchester 9422 Magnum Laminate, Winchester 94 30-30, Marlin 60, Benelli Montefeltro 12ga, Ruger Red Label 28ga, Ruger Red Label All-Weather 12ga, Kimber Stainless Raptor II, S&W 629 Classic 44 Mag, Ruger MKII Target, Ruger Charger, and my 50 BMG is my collection

I don't collect, I accumulate and I shoot. No safe queens for me. I don't have a Remington 700 nor do I particularly want one. I had one once, sold it the next day. I don't care for Rugers or Ar's, Ak's, etc. I do have a sporterized 98 mauser and a sporterized 1903A3. Several lever guns including an original 1887 Winchester. Would like to have a Garand to go with my M1 carbine tho.

My list: only just begun...

I'm only 3 deep on my list. Things started shaping up in pairs, with a category example and a trainer edition in .22LR. But then there were some categories where I like multiple examples. *means I have it

1) semi-auto, mag-fed carbine
Marlin 795* / Ruger 10/22
M1 carbine, USGI

2) bolt action, scoped
CZ-455*
CZ-550 in .308 or Remington 700

3) AR-15/AK47 or similar civilian version of assault rifle
S&W M&P15 22
AR-15 (AK-47/SKS doesn't appeal)

4) Lever action
Marlin 39a Mountie - gotta be a straight stock, but would prefer non-checkered stock, too.
Winchester pre-1960 30-30 or Marlin 92c .357

5) Semi-auto full-sized pistol - could go nuts in this category
CZ-kadet*
CZ-75b / Beretta 92fs / 1911

6) historical interest
M1 Garand / M1 Carbine

7) Home defense shotgun
Mossberg 500 / Remington 870
