What any gun collection should have?

Basically I want to know what is the one rifle (make/model/caliber) that you feel like any self respecting gun collection shouldn't be without?

the following 4 rifles cover 99.99% of any occasions. I think almost everyone wit enough guns to justify the term "rifle collection" has all of them.

10/22 and/or marlin 60
SKS and/or lever action
AR15 and/or AK 47
bolt action .308 and/or .30-06

In my personal opinion, it’s un-American to not own at least one each of the following.

Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60

Remington 700 in any caliber

Nothing personal, just my opinion. :o

Well, that answers that. They wrote what I was going to say. A 700 in 308 or 30/06. I prefer the short action myself. I have my 10/22 and my lever action. I have my AR15 also.

I know this is the Rifle forum but realistically a 44 Mag too.

Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22
Remington 700 in 30 caliber of any flavor
and an CMP Garand.

You can't call yourself a collector without at least 2 of the 3. I don't have a Garand yet.

a .30-30 lever could easily be added, but for me.. I don't know, just not my thing. (I do have one though!)

A Ruger 10/22 or other classic 22 iE Win 63, Rem speedmaster, Browning 22 auto or a Marlin 60. A good collection would have all these and maybe a Marlin or Savage bolt and a lever 22 of some nature.
A collection must contain either a M1 Garand or AR15 preferably both.
Must have a 30/30 lever Marlin or Winchester.
ETA need to have somthing in the Ma Bell catagory like a Rem 700 heavy bbl 308 with good glass.:D

Interesting question I always thought that a collection needed historical firearms included as well as a modern group. A grouping of .22 cal rim-fire rifles and hand guns is a start and preferable a quality American military rifle of days gone by as well as more modern group. So at minimum a M-1 Garand, or 1903 bolt 03-A3 will do, and a Winchester or Marlin lever gun.

Couldn't disagree with anything here. My own preference for a basic "collection" is a bit different.

The necessities:
-A .22lr (preferably lever or semi-auto)
-A .30 caliber centerfire of some type (most commonly a bolt or lever action)
-A muzzleloader
These will let you hunt most anything on the North American continent (except Alaskan stuff, perhaps)

The gravy:
-Smaller caliber centerfire (AR, .22-250, .222, or the like)
-Historical battle rifle - (M1, 1903, Enfield, etc.)

This doesn't include any of the shotguns or pistols I think a good basic collection needs.

Mauser 98
SMLE
Mosin Nagant
Garand
M1 Carbine
AK47
FAL
G3
AUG
AR15
By the time you got this list complete you know what else to get.

I would personally keep it simpler...

A .22, rifle or pistol, for teaching and plinking and just plain fun!
A rifle (lever, bolt, semi) for hunting.
A shotgun, because there is nothing they CAN'T do.
A pistol of some type, larger than .22.

Oh, yeah, I say this because it fits my "collection". :D

10/22
Savage 111 7mmRM
870
G17

I think your question relates to a collection of guns which would include a varity of firearms rifles, shotguns, handgun. Most collectors I know pin point their collection into a specific area such as Remingtons model 725s,or Win. pre 64 model 70s,Colt SAA, Ruger 3 screw, Model 12 Win. etc.

I used to collect 3 screw Rugers (64 of them at one time) that was a collection. Now I have just a bunch of firearms rifles and handguns and shotguns.

Most collectors don't shoot the guns in their collection they hang em on the wall and admire them. We as shooters on the other hand do the same but we shoot them all.

It dosen't matter what you collect as long as you enjoy it and of course can afford it. I have a friend who collects JC Higgins guns, and people used to snicker at him because as you know they weren't much of a collector item.
A few years back he won a 1st or 2nd place best of show display at the National NRA convention. Kinda made him snicker:)

a 10/22
a lever action (any caliber)

I think you need at least 4 types of guns to cover the basics.

1. a large rifle for hunting
2. a shot gun for for hunting/home defense
3. a hand gun for defense
4. a plinking gun to teach others to shoot and for fun.

for me it is

1. 45/70 Govt. (marlins and a Magnum research BFR)

2. 12ga (Remington 870 and an old cheep double barrel I may make in to a class 2 weapon some day)

3. 357 magnums (2 j-frames an 8 shot 627 S&W a Coonan Classic and 2 marlin lever actions 16.25 inch barrel and a 22 inch barrel)

4. 17 HMR (a marlin bolt action and a cheep Taurus revolver)

p.s. MY wife has guns that do not fit in to these 4 bullets but I do not.

Hmmm, I'm going to say a well-made FAL - either an original FN, Izzy, or Aussie, or possibly one made by DSA.
