What ammo for .308 Savage Model 10

I would like to stay with a 10x for now, it is what I chose and I am fine with it. I don't mind the challenge. And the gun is a 1 in 10 twist
 
O and you really going to need something more powerful that a 10x scope. I would say at the very very least something closer 20x. More realistic to go for 25x +

You most definitely don't... 10x is enough magnification to quarter a 24"x24" plate at 1,000 yards...

Too much magnification is not always your friend. You catch extra mirage, it clouds your view of the target....neither are good...

I'd start with Sierra Match Kings or Hornady match ammo.
Remington match ammo is good, I've just had better luck with Sierra and Hornady.
 
10x is a good tactical power. It is inadequate for bench rest on cool days, but on a hot day you might find 10x to be too much power.
 
My Precision Carbine is a sub MOA at 100yds with 168gr SMK over 40 grains of IMR 4895. I have a Bushnell Elite 10X mildot on it. I really like mine.
 
Finally got my rifle today. Can't post pics, I left my phone at my buddies house. But I like it a lot so far, still missing glass. I will post a pic as soon as I can. I also picked up some Federal Match ammo 7.61x51, the shop told me it's 308, anyone have issues with 7.62x51 in a 308?

It's the same stuff. It is Federal's 175 gr Sierra Matchking bullet. One of, if not the best factory match loads that you can buy. My Remington 700 shoots them sub-MOA out to 500 yards.

These loads shoot great out of my Savage 10FLP and 16FLHSS Custom.

Bullet: Nosler 175 gr. HPBT
Powder: Hodgdon Varget 43.0 grs.
Primer: Wolf Large Rifle
Case: Lapua
LOAL: 2.853 (2.272 Base to Ogive with Stoney Point)
Average Velocity: 2610 fps
Extreme Spread: 25.38
Standard Deviation: 8.00

The bullets are seated out as far as they'll go while still fitting the magazine (about 2.866 on my 16FLHSS). Bullet jump 0.040.

Here's a similar load (with a Sierra bullet) at normal loaded length from my 10FLP. It has a longer throat and older (+3000 rounds) barrel.

Bullet: Sierra 175 gr. HPBT
Powder: Hodgdon Varget 43.0 grs.
Primer: CCI-BR2
Case: Lapua
LOAL: 2.805 (2.230 Base to Ogive with Stoney Point)
Velocity: 2582 fps

I tried a load recommended by Bart B. this weekend using a Sierra 190 gr. HPBT. I was going to use these in a friends 300 Win Mag but he didn't seem interested - and bullets are kind of scarce right now.

Good groups at 100 yards but forgot my camera.

From my 16FLHSS again.

Bullet: Sierra 190 gr. HPBT
Powder: IMR 4064
Primer: Federal 210
Case: Federal
LOAL: 2.850
Velocity: 2580 fps

Going out next sunday. Gonna try for 500-800 yards after I break in the barrel. I already cleaned it, its ready to go. This is what I will do.

One shot, clean with solvent and oil
Three shots while zeroing the scope, clean with solvent and oil
Four shots (magazine limit), clean once more.

Good enough?
 
Mine likes Black Hills 175g SMK and has held .5 MOA out to 400 yards on a good day. We usually shoot 168 at 400 yards and it's about the same.

Just shot the 175's at F/TR class at 1,000 and they did great.
 
Alright went shooting today. Took me so long to get the thing sighted in kinda ****** me off. But finally got it sighted in and had a good day. I was hitting whatever I wanted at 300 yards. At that distance I was doing holdover only because I was still sighting in. My best 100 yard group was 1.5 MOA four shots. My bipod was really loose and it was my first time shooting it so I have something to build off of. The scope is only a 10x and I'm sure that has something to do with it. Anyways, going out again on saturday to get some better groups and shoot at much longer distances.
 
A 10x magnification is not the problem when shooting at 100 yards. It is a capable magnification for shooting all the way out to 1,000 yards.

I would recommend to keep shooting at 100 until you are shooting MOA and smaller groups, then move on out. That will mean that your trigger control, breathing, and equipment are all working together.
 
For sure, I just have been impatient shooting good groups. I think I can get it MOA or better. I am not saying 10x is not good enough but say I had a 24x or something I think the sub MOA or MOA groups would be easier.

Ya I need to work on all of my techniques for sure. It was my first day out with it so I was probably excited.
 
Here's what my Precision Carbine will do at 100yds with the 168gr SMK on 40 grains of IMR 4895 in IMI NATO brass. I was using ancient Federal large rifle primers from back when they packaged them in a wood box with cardboard sleeve.

My group shown above was done without any break-in. I took it out and bore sighted it at 50 yards with the eyeball looking down the barrel at the target. Got it zeroed and moved the target out to 100 and fired for effect.

I know barrel break in is very controversial subject but I wouldn't waste your time doing a barrel break-in. Read THIS ARTICLE ABOUT BARREL BREAK-IN.
 
Well i went out again today. Did a little better. My scope was creeping forward on the last go around so i reset it and did the clear nailpolish trick. My best group was 1 moa. The groups were about 1.5 moa all day. I had a target at 260 yards and i pulled 1.5 moa and 2 moa groups. One group was holdover and the next group i tried tracking with the scope and it worked really well. Ill post pics later
 
Here is one of the "mods" I did to get the rifle to fit me more. When I would get on the rifle I would have to adjust my head forward about a 1/2" to get a perfect sight picture. So I ground off the first bumps on the weaver mount to ge the scope back a few. I also made some ghetto cheek piece. No picture though.

The scope works perfect by the way. I would track it out to the long target and track it back to my short target and it was perfect every time.
