what am I doing wrong?

Re: post #15??

Is the OP acknowledging that the bullet is intended for the .45 Colt rather than the ACP? If so, that should settle the question. To be used with the semi, should work, but needs to be seated more deeply to keep from hanging up on the rifling. He seems to be saying that the bullet was initially for the .45 Colt in post 14.

Retiredsteve,

Take a look at the SAAMI drawing. You will see 0.4732" is maximum diameter over the bullet just behind the neck, and it will be about 0.474" by the time you get to the base position of a round of hardball. 0.475" is definitely over maximum. (Note that in SAAMI drawings all cartridge lengths and diameters are given as maximum values with a minus-only tolerance, while chambers are dimensioned the other way around).

I have run into foreign brass before with extra thick necks and that was loaded originally with 0.450" bullets. It would not allow a case with a seated 0.452" bullet to chamber. So check the brass against other brass as to neck thickness.

I have a Ruger CMD and I had to seat my bullets a little deeper than what I use in my other pistols. The ruger has no leade so if the shoulder is more than a hair above the case mouth it hit's the rifling and stops. Plunk test is important for auto pistols. The gun works fine now. I probably only seated .005 or less deeper.

If your cases are trimmed to the proper length, bullet seated to the proper OAL with a taper crimp & checked in a drop in case gauge, you should be good to go.
