What a strange Mossy...............

Friend of mine just bought the ugliest Mossburg shotgun I ever saw; don't see it on their website, but it is a Model 500. Has a pistol grip, heat shield, and a muzzle brake that looks more like a grenade launcher.

What's up with that?

Did it look like this:

mossberg is churning out a lot of weird stuff but at least, as far as I know, they still work. some companies lately have let their quality take a serious dive.

If mossberg wants to make some money off of a "tactical" fool I have no problem with that, as long as they keep producing models that fit my practical needs.
Maybe you enjoyed Bill Rugers "no honest man needs more than ten rounds" approach to things.

From Mossberg's Press Release on their launch of pistol-grip-only Road Blocker...

"Setting the Road Blocker apart from Mossberg’s other special purpose shotguns is a functional muzzle brake designed to reduce recoil and minimize muzzle jump. The Road Blocker also features a drilled and tapped receiver, factory-ready for a Picatinny rail. The pistol grip and heat shield round out the Road Blocker’s package making it compact and easy to maneuver. For personal or home defense purposes the Road Blocker is ideal for close quarter situations."

It is getting very tough for me to continue taking Mossberg seriously at this point. The Barrett style muzzle brakes and weed eater grips on shotguns, the horrific railed lever gun, etc. are just a bit tooridiculous and gimmicky for me to swallow. I'd rather see some practical products.

I've used a breaching shotgun enough to know that the "chainsaw" grip is not going offer any benefits over a standard pump grip, though I can think of plenty of problems that it presents.

They ought to make a STEEL receiver, 590/870 mag cap and barrel design standardized on the 500, metal tang safety, and put nice walnut stocks on the gun. I think that would gain more respect and actually sell.

That being said, I'm perfectly happy with the original Mossberg 500A field design that was designed in '61. No need to change it, it just works at a good price point.

It is not a "Road Blocker, but a "Rolling Thunder". The thing on the end of the barrel, Moss. calls a "barrel stabilizer"[?]. From 10' looks like a big supressor.

Friend Earl fired six Frenchy- brand 00 buck 2 3/4" at 20 yards from the hip; all six missed the target.
Earl shakes his right hand, trying to rid himself of the sting between the thumb and fore-finger. OK; raise it up to eye level and pop one off. Earl curses
as he removes his thumb from his eye. Hit the target this time [barely].

With that blob on the end of the barrel, you can't aim even though there is a small brass bead.

It's difficult to operate the safety with that pistol grip. Also very hard to operate the bolt release [?] because of its' location.

Earl decides he needs one of those AR 15 type collapsable stocks. Gonna put on a Piccatinny rail and a red-dot scope. Add a tactical light with a laser beam. Oh, and one of those shell holders [six shots might not do the job!].
While we're ordering, let's get some 3" whiz-bang shells [hi-brass] with a slug AND buckshot. Oh yeah,,,,,,,,,,,,,that'll do the job......

Mossberg has gone so full retard with their products that I have trouble taking them seriously these days. Now I love my old M590 like I had carried in the Corps years ago and I still love my old school M500ATP but I really don't have any future plans on getting any further Mossberg products. With all this foolish crap they are turning out, how much attention are they devoting to useful products rather than something that belongs next to the cheap "dragon fantasy of the planet pluton" knives you see at gun/jerky/beanie-baby shows? I also question what their quality control is these days when I see crap like this coming out or have they degenerated to airsoft quality since it looks like that's the market they are trying to cater to. No, my last 2 shotguns I bought were Remington 870s, one a 20 gauge defense model and the other one a 12 gauge Police gun and to be honest, I have no problems with going the Remington route either. Listen up Mossberg, if you want to cater to kids, posers and wanna-be's, I have no problem buying from other more serious companies!

I wouldn't buy something like that but if Mossberg still makes there normal models quality then I don't see the problem with making money off "mall ninjas".

My goodness. . .someone needs to tell them that the lever action as a patrol or defense rifle is no excuse to ruin a classic look!

I agree I'm sure there is a much more tasteful way to have the same features.

But what's their quality control department more concerned about, making sure something minor like oh say a firing pin is installed or if the weed whacker handle or muzzle brake is on the things? Nope, no new Mossbergs for me!

Neither one of the guns pictured have no practical uses for the average consumer besides having something their friends dont. I fail to see the point of having a muzzle brake on a shotgun.
