What 6.5x55 Rifle?

I'm thinking about a new deer rifle this year and I want to try the 6.5x55 caliber as I've always read and heard great things about it. The dilemma is whether to buy a whole new production rifle line the CZ 550 or to "re-purpose" an old Yugo M48 that I did a custom build on in .308.

I can get the CZ for about $650ish without glass.

The Mauser will need a new barrel chambered in 6.5x55 and a new sporter stock since the one that's on the gun now is a benchrest stock. If I go with a stainless barrel, I can save money on having the barreled action reblued. My gunsmith is very reasonable in his pricing and I think this route will be cheaper. Something makes me feel like I'd appreciate this option more than a production rifle. But I don't know.

Appreciate any thoughts or feedback.

I will be getting one before next season, either a CZ or Tikka. That is unless I can find a Winchester Featherweight in good shape. I would go new instead of trying to modify your Mauser.

I have a CZ 550 American in 6.5 X 55 and I love it. It is extremely picky, and I do mean EXTREMELY picky, about seat depth. Once you dial it in, its a tack driver. A seat depth change can literally mean the difference between 3/8 and 2 MOA groups.

Ruger No. 1 if you can find one, drawback is the cost, about $900 and up.

Rebuilding a benchrest shooter into a hunting rifle sounds like a good idea to me.

Ruger made some of their single shot rifles chambered in 6.5x55. Might be fun to find one of those...

Definitely go Ruger #1 if you can. It makes an excellent deer rifle. Short in over all length & handling, but still has a long barrel.

JIMO also...

I did not know the #1 was ever offered in 6.5. I will have to start asking what calibers the #1's I see in gun shops are.

I would without a doubt go with the CZ. If you want it to come with iron sights get the 550 FS. If you're planning on mounting a scope, get the 550 American.

the 6.5x55 belongs in a Swedish rifle:p so naturally I have to say a Husqvarna

but I am not a fan of the m/96 and its versions, cock on closing is a bitch. pretty and accurate rifles but still...

Finnish is close enough I guess, the sako and tikka, but look to the germans aswell, the sauer 202, and perhaps even the new "budget" sauer the 101. or the Blaser! the straight pull is awesome the "hammer" thing is great for safety and the Blaser has a good reputation for accuracy, and swap barrels if you want/need something with a more ump

Well, being a Savage fan...
You could get a spin-on barrel in 6.5 x 55 (I know Criterion makes them, I'm sure others do as well).

Either find a suitable used Savage in a LA and swap the barrel, or get an action and aftermarket stock.

You'll end up spending less than a new factory, and with a CBI barrel- better accuracy than any other factory offering. JMO...
