What 45 acp do I get? I have alot of guns, but the ony 45acp's I have are 2 different thompsons'...smg....there are so many different models for every manufacturer....what are the best, and for what reasons?

thanks chris

Hard decision

Thats like asking: Hmmmm.....Blonde, Brunette, Redhead?

I am a H&K Man.
Reasons?
Durability-H&K advertises that their pistols are made for +P shooting all day, they are built like a tank and are excellent field weapons. They even jammed a bullet in the barrel and cleared it by firing another round behind it in the testing phase, and it still kept 2-3 inch groups at 25 meters. You gotta love that. I had a S&W that happened to and after S&W repaired it, I could not even keep the rounds on the paper.

Performance-Out of the box superb accuracy, recoil is manageable, and absolutely no jams of any kind.

Flexibility-They can be carried cocked and locked, Double to single, or you can kit it to double only.

There are other makes that have a smoother trigger, more comfortable grips, and are smaller in size. Only you can decide what the application(target, conceal carry, service use) is for when it comes to choosing a .45

SIG Sauer P220. More accurate than the USP for some folks, less accurate for others, and costs less too.

Others may tell you to buy a 1911 style because that's their favorite, but you should get what is most comfortable for you.

SIG P220 ST

The Sig P220 is probably one of the, if not, the best .45 ever made. It is very handsome, accurate, and comfortable. The Hk USP45 would be my 2nd choice as it is very durable and pretty accurate it it's own sense, but this is a polymer frame gun, not steel. I really recommend the new P220ST in all stainless frame and slide. This is a handomse gun! You get the best of both world's of the Sig and Hk, and then some. I currently have two Sig P220's amd love them to death. My next gun was an Hk USP45 or tactical. I was at a local gun shop today to either look at it again or order it. Then I asked about the all stainless P220, and to my surprise, they have it available! The price is only $50 more than the Hk, and this is all stainless. He called his distributor and found that they have them ready to ship anytime upon order. He said it takes about 3-5 days to arrive. So the P220ST it is, hands down! I am trading in my blue P220 for it on Monday! Yeepee!

No gun collection is complete without at least ONE 1911... Any of the other pistols already mentioned would work fine also. I'll throw in my vote for a Glock 30 as an excellent candidate to consider.

Fired my Glock 30 for the first time today and was amazed by it's accuracy. Haven't shot my Les Baer PII recently but I could swear......nah, can't be. 200 rounds of mixed ammo without a hiccup and recoil is almost unnoticeble. Was thinking about getting a HK USP Tactical next but this G30 has me wondering if I should bother. Ahh, I'll probably get one anyway but I'm sure impressed with this Glock.

I am also an HK man. I am very impressed by the accuracy, durability, and warranty of the gun. If you buy a new HK there is a lifetime warranty to the original owner. I am purchasing a USP Tactical this weekend, can't wait!!
It all depends on what feels comfortable to you. If you have the chance, shoot as many different brands as possible. Find the one that suits your style the best. Everyones tastes and styles are different, so take your time find the one that is right for you.
After all if you can't shoot it, what's the point in having it?
Good Luck;)

SIG P220 is one awesome weapon. You won't be disappointed with the quality, accuracy and dependability of the SIG.

Hee Haw!!! Here's another vote for the world
famous Sig-Sauer P220A. Undoubtedly, the finest
DA/SA firearm ever produced. Master it, and you
can shoot 'em all. Feature's include: Reliability, Accuracy, & Quality Craftsmanship.

Best Wishes,

I'm an HK man too (gotta get my shouts out), but come on, guys, let's not screw him up.

What really matters is how the GUN FITS YOU. Check out as many as you can HANDS ON, report back with your top two and ask (or search) about their reputations. If they both unanamiously stink and you can afford again, repeat process...

THINK: "How does it feel to ME?" Trust me, if it don't feel good, you will have immediate buyer's remorse. Well, maybe not immediate...

What krept said...

Go to the range. Rent or borrow as many different .45's as you can and see which ones work for you. Two or three will likely separate themselves from the pack. Then it's down to things such as purpose (home defense, concealed carry, etc.) and looks from there.

A good fit in your hands is at or near the top of the list in terms of importance.

Reliability is first, in my book, but any of the firearms from almost any of the major manufacturers will provide that.

Accuracy is a little overrated as a determining factor for a defensive pistol IMO. Hitting a man-sized target in the chest out to 25 yards just doesn't require astounding accuracy. And for a LOT of people, accuracy is a function of the fit of the weapon anyway. Unless you're planning for serious target competition, then once again pretty much anything from the major manufacturers (Glock, HK, Sig, S&W, Kimber, Springfield, Colt, etc.) will provide you with more than enough accuracy.

Now get yourself to the range! :D

Haven't shot my Les Baer PII recently but I could swear......nah, can't be
Interesting! I watched a fella a while back chew the center out of a target with what I though was his Colt Cold Cup. I was only half right since half the shots came out of the Colt. The other half came out of his brand new, right out of the box Glock 30. I have yet to hear anyone say the 30 is inaccurate.

SIG 245 is great out of the box.

On my want to get list is a Glock 30.

So those are my recommendations.
One of each.

Listen to me and you will be happy forever.:p

Cmax, I'm a newbie, and was struggling with this very question, but in my case, this is for my first purchase, since I have no other guns in my collection.

Over the past week, I joined the local club, have rented almost a dozen guns, and have put hundreds of rounds (and dollars! ) through many weapons, both in .45 and 9mm, including HK, Baretta, Glock, Kimber, Colt, and Sig.

There are a LOT of really great choices out there, but in the end, I decided to order the Kimber Custom Eclipse II, since the 1911 just fit me well, I shot it as well as a 9mm, and because it's a classic design, that has endured the test of time for a reason.

Have a look at one (if you can find it...) and you'll see what I mean. Drop dead gorgeous. As pretty as they come, it's a .45ACP, and it's a Kimber. It has a lot of things going for it.

Take a look at my post here, since it might give you some ideas for 1911's, if you decide to go that route.

Which 45?

Let's see. My 1911 gathers dust most of the time. My Witness gets shot rarely because it needs to be coddled to keep it from breaking (though very accurate). And my KP97DAO gets carried when I am not carrying my KP95DAO, like as I am typing this.

Check them all out and buy what will most serve your purposes, and your wallet.

Good Call Rovert. I have a Kimber Pro Carry HD, and I love mine. Got it for steal: $500, less than 300 rounds through it (know the guy how I got it from); three extra 8-round mags and Hogue grips. Its a tack driver, and has a beautiful trigger pull...

If you can get it for the right price, they are worth it.

If I can pull it off, my next one is a Kimber Ultra for CCW..,,

NO gun collection is complete without a .45 ACP 1911!!!

Gandalf, in the final analysis, I got it for $965, when I factor out tax, and about $30 in ammo that I shot through that they threw in for free.

I didn't really shop it out, because they're hard to come by, so hardball negotiation would probably only get the gun sold to someone else who would pay more. And, since this is my first purchase, I felt more comfortable ordering it from my local shop/range, who is a Kimber Master dealer. Even if it cost a little more than somewhere else, I have the peace of mind knowing that I got it from a legitimate dealer, and it's not a factory second, or whatever.

Some really fine pistols mentioned so far. To look at your problem in a different way though - if you want something to match your Tompsons, get a 1911. It was the companion gun to the tommy gun of the roaring twentys (that is the type you have isn't it?) and still an extrememly fine gun even when compared to all those above.

Now which 1911 to get????
