Formal or informal target shooter? Big difference between the two. I'll offer a couple of informal stock ts suggestions considering the budget:

Beretta Neos

Walther SP22 M3

I think some of the Ruger MKIIIs have rails.

The look of that Neos is kind of crazy future tactical, which I don't usually like, but, for some reason, I find myself wanting one.

I own a Beretta NEOS,,,

Sweet little semi-auto,,,
Shoots where you point it at,,,
Not too picky on ammo type either.

I got mine new for $250.00 + Tax at a local gun store.

I not truly qualified to give a professional evaluation,,,
All I can say is that I like shooting it a lot,,,
Fits my smallish hands very nicely.

It's also a breeze to take apart for cleaning.

All the new Ruger MKIII's come drilled and tapped for an included top rail. Many of the Browning Buckmark models also come so-equipped. You really need to handle a bunch of them before deciding.

S&W 22A,,,

This is a nice pistol as well,,,
I don't like mine as much as the NEOS though,,,
The Smith 22A has a relatively fat hand grip that bugs me.

That's my only gripe about it though,,,
Shoots straight and very reliably eats any ammo I feed it.

They do have a rail though,,,

The Beretta Neos is easily the biggest bargain in a quality built .22lr. Stay away from the overpriced & underbuilt Walther.

agree with the others on Berreta value etc.

If your looking for top of the line you need to add the rail but they are drilled and tapped in the new versions. IE Buckmark, SW Model 41. On the older version of the same you need to drill and tap yourself. These are pushing $1000. Just sold my 41 for lack of use, no other reason. It could pound tacks at 20 yards but I never got into competition shooting.

I have the Ruger 22/45 MKIII, as well as S & W 41. However I have shot the Beretta. And that would be my choice if money is no object. Also the 41 but with a Clark barrel.

Good luck,

Max

You want a Neos. It's built like a tank, it has good accuracy, and it shoots whatever you feed it. And, unlike some competitors I can think of, it's stupidly easy to field strip. Only bad parts are the so-so trigger (fixable) and the mediocre iron sights (which is what the rail is for).

Of course, if money isn't a problem, the Beretta 87T seems to get nothing but rave reviews.

I have a neos with an optical scope. It is fun and accurate, at least for a casual shooter like myself. I have never had any problems.

Hold it before you buy it. The grips are kinda small, and not everyone likes the grip angle.

You will love the ease of field stripping this one.

(also have a MKIII, which is a great shooter, but mine has no rail.)

I was deciding between the Ruger MkIII and the Buckmark. The Ruger had the rail included in the box, the Buckmark did not, I'd have had to order one from Browning.
I bought the Ruger.
my 2cents.

Many of the Ruger MK IIs and I believe all the MK IIIs come with accessory Weaver rails. This is my MK II 678GC with an Ultradot LT holosight.

No longer imported (made?), but the Baikal IZH-35M has a rail. Basically a Bullseye gun, 5 round mags. Available used.

As others have posted, Ruger MKIII's come with included rails, and are pre-drilled and tapped. Here's one very heavy example. (Heavy doesn't matter much when your shooting from a rest.);) It'll hit a fly in the eye at 25 yards.

I've got a Buckmark Target. Came with a Weaver rail. I've got a red dot mounted on it. Tack driver, and eats any kind of ammo I feed it.
