What 22 should I buy? Bolt edition

Hey Im looking for something that can shoot so I can work on some skills cheaply. Whats the word on Savages mk 2? Accutrigger, easy scope mount with iron sights sounds good to me but I wouldnt buy anything without asking wiser folks. Either that or a CZ I think but that seems to be a bit more $$. Looking for a bolt gun- NO SEMIS plz

You'll get a ton of responses I'm sure. Personally, if you want something cheap that you can fiddle around with I would get a Ruger 10/22 since there's a ton of aftermarket parts.

Something you will probably hand down to your progeny I would get a CZ 452. Just well made and handsome rifles.

I don't own a Marlin 60 (yet) but they've got a following.

As far as tactical carbine type, I've got some sweet shooting ones- a SIG 522 and a GSG5 (looks like an HK MP5).

No experience with Savage, sorry.

I have a Savage MK II GL (Walnut stock, left handed, stock iron sights, bolt action) and I absolutely love it, very accurate, easy to clean, love the trigger, never has had a bullet fail to feed or fire through it. Really a brilliant gun.

I also have a Savage 64 FRD (Black synthetic stock, red dot sightm semi auto) and it is also very accurate, trigger is not as good as MKII's but still ok, much much harder to break down and clean. It seems to have issues feeding bullets when the magazine is angled wrong after it has been inserted correctly (Happened when shooting from my big bean bag, it was alter the angle of the mag a bunch it seemed). Overall though, it is still an extremely nice rifle for the low low price.

I'm sure other people will come along talking about the CZ 22 bolt rifle (I think it's call the 452 or 455?(bolt)), or the Ruger 10/22(semi) or the Marlin Model 60(semi).

They're all nice rifles, I've read a huge amounts of stuff on all of them due to my OCD levels of wanting to get as much info on them as I can before I made my two choices. You can't go wrong with those I listed really.

Edit: looks like my slow typing and many edits made me post after someone mention three of the ones I said people would mention. (452, 10/22, Model 60) wouldwouldathunkit.

Edit 2: forget my semi-auto related stuff, I'll leave it up rather than delete it for other people who may come across this thread.

I think the OP did a ninja edit to add bolt action only. It definitely wasn't there when I posted. Otherwise I would not have mentioned all those other rifles except the CZ. Oh well.

+1 --- CZ 452 or 453 Varmint. If 452, likely you will need some trigger work; consider the adjustable sear. On my 453, have not used the set trigger but the regular trigger is good.
I have tried a Savage w/ accutrigger several years ago -- no luck with it. I sold it just a year after I bought it. Could not adjust the trigger to my liking. I t did not shoot as well as my CZs. Maybe it was a lemon.

I have a CZ 455 , 22WMR that allows .22LR, or .17 HMR barrels to be used, but I don't think I'd buy either replacement barrel. It shot rather poorly from the factory, but after, reshapng the firing pin, pillar-bedding the action and Locktiting the barrel, it groups 1" at 100 yards with CCI V-Max 30 grain bullets.

It was a barely-used rifle and assume the prior owner didn't like the accuracy, but the stock is nicely grained and that prompted me to take it home.

I wish the barrel were a bit heavier for steadier holding offhand, but it carries well for walkabouts on the property. There's enough punch to handle coyotes and woodchucks out to 75 yards or so, but quiet enough as to not disturb neighbors.

There aren't many factory rimfire rifles that are without faults, some serious, some not, but it pays to know how to tweak them, or know a gunsmith who really knows how to make rimfires shoot their best.

+1 on the CZ 452. It is an outstanding rifle, shoots very accurately and is a work of art. You will not be disappointed, nor will your heirs.

marlin xt-22 can be had for about 175. mine is very accurate and if you get the tubular mag is easy to load and has a high capicity. its also great for shooting CB shorts for quiet back yard plinking

I'm looking at savages as well. I would prefer to have a tube fed one rather then magazine but I can't find one anyplace.

I have a lakefield mk2 which is now owned by savage. Its the same as the savage mk2. I love it, it fun to shoot, accurate for a .22lr. Cheap to shoot. All around fun gun! I got my monies worth outta her already!!!

My opinion is that CZ and Savage offer great bolt action rifles.

If you want to go with a tube feed - I think Marlin and Mossberg both have tube feed.

If you consider used ----
I love my old Winchester Model 67, as well as my retired Remington boy scout rifle (forget model number --- 58 maybe).

I have a Marlin model 25 and its been very very accurate. Zero malfunctions of any kind thus far, and I've gone through a few thousand rounds with it.

Folks are always saying that you will have to work on a CZ bolt action rimfire's trigger. One can do some fine shooting with the rifle just as it comes from the factory. I have used unaltered CZ 452 models several times to shoot into the gold metal class at the CMP National Sporter Matches held at Camp Perry, OH each July.
