West German manufactured Sig?

I can remember having a couple of those in the store, but there was a very common rumor (probably from some gun rag) about the slides coming off the frame during firing due to the design of the rails which were intermittent.

Or has my failing memory been thinking of another contemporary German import?

Mud rails are prone to cracking if abused with +P ammo but that was on P226s. Those were only made between 1986-87. IIRC

Browning BDA? Wish I had one of these.

I could kick my own tail for missing out on a LNIB Browning BDA 9mm version that turned up at an LGS about 15 years ago for $300.00. I don't think I've seen another one like it since then. These were great shooting guns!

Yep, Browning BDA, actually a BDA 45 since it is in .45 ACP...

There was also a BDA 38 in Super .38...

And a BDA 9 in 9X19mm...

Hawes also imported the same gun in the same 3 cartridges, don't know what their model numbers are without looking...

But, according to the internet "Hawes were the first importer of JP Sauer & Sohn firearms into America. JP Sauer & Sohn are the oldest firearms manufacturer still active in Germany."

There was also a Browning "BDA" 380 in .380 ACP of course. This model was a completely different design. It was a Beretta 84 without the open topped slide...

Well I cannot for the life of me figure out how to post a picture but I bought it. REAL W German Sig made in 1989 with all the proper markings on the slide and frame :) Huge thanks to everyone for the info and helping with my decision! Extremely happy with my purchase and it shoots like a dream! Absolutely love it!

You can use a 3rd party photo site like Photobucket. From there you can link to the image using the insert photo icon in the tool bar or simply paste the link into

When it comes to the P229 is there any advantage to a German made frame?

I am looking at a used P229 with a frame marked "Made in Germany". I assume the slide is US made as there is nothing to suggest it is German made.

No real advantage but either way it should be a fine gun. The P229 were only made in Germany in very limited quantities. It is a US origin gun built for the 40 S&W and .357 Sig round.
