WELL, I BOUGHT A TASCO SS (GASP)

I have a Tasco SS 10x42 (rear parralax adj) on a 338 Lapua Magnum. 165 rounds so far, no issues.

Oh yeah, Warne QD rings on a SAKO dovetail (TRG-S)

attn: Hipower.

I have a rem 700 VS in .308 with the Leupold 6.5-20x50 LRT 30mm and I ran out of elevation just past 800 yards. I can hold dead on at 800, but when I moved back to 900 and 1000 I had to hold over. I still shot great scores and have recently shimmed the rear base (I didn't feel like buying the new badger base and new rings). So warning to any and all, if you want to shoot 1000 yards, no matter what scope you get, get a tapered base, it will be worth it. Sure if I was using a hotter magnum load it might get there and I even noticed a large difference in Sierra 175's and Hornady 178 A-max at 1000 yards (the A-max shot quite a bit flatter), but just having that extra play is so worth it when you are trying to reach out and touch something. And I don't have a hotter magnum, if you do you might be able to make it, but once again, like hipower, error on the corrected side. Nothing sucks more than when you try to shoot your first 1000 yard match and you find out on the firing line you ran out of elevation. I was able to hold over the target and still shoot a darn good score and have fun, but it is so much easier to be able to hold dead on.

Gunmart:

Ever get the feeling we are not speaking the same language?

I appreciate your efforts to warn against potential mistakes, but have you bothered to read any of my posts?

The link you posted has nothing to do with the SS series. Tasco imports scopes, they don't make them. The SS series is made by a different maker than the less expensive ones.

I believe that if Tasco could figure out a way to import Leups and overstamp them with Tasco, you'd still bag on them.

Edited to relect that I know Leups are made in USA.

Hey CITADELGRAD87 and all you fellows running out of elevation, (BTW CITADELGRAD87, I hunt the Low Country on a couple of old Plantations East of Orangeburg.)

I don't normally contribute to L-o-n-g Range shooting discussions because it would be "hypocritical" of me to do one thing and preach another. Needless to say, I "strongly encourage" close range hunting.

Now, with that said. for those of you shooting "paper" way out yonder and you are running out of scope clicks, there are expensive methods to get what you need as well as relatively "reasonable" methods.

Depending on your action, Sinclair International may have what you want in Lightforce Tapered Scope Bases. Or, they also offer Davidson Bases (some can be machined to fit actions they don't list) for the Arnold Jewell Scope Rings. These have a 2-piece inner sleeve that floats within the ring. No "Ring Lapping" is needed. http://www.sinclairintl.com See page 83.

Or, there is another way that provides just what many of you are looking for at SIGNIFICANTLY less cost. (In fact, I really prefer this option.) Take the same catalog and look over on page 82. There you will see the Burris "Signature" rings that come with the "Synthetic (floating) Inserts". These are built to grip the scope similar to Mr.Jewell's Rings, except these have the Synthetic Inserts.

For what it is worth, there is no doubt in my mind that this is the "Next Generation" of scope rings, and they are available today.
1) No Lapping is needed. The Synthetic Inserts float to eliminate ANY chance of putting a bind on the scope tube.
2) The Synthetic Inserts put a tenacious grip on the scope tube without damaging it.
3) Plus they offer an "Offset Insert" kit that will provide the benefit of a "Tapered Base", but for $12.50.

If your rifle accepts Weaver style bases, you use the Signature Zee Rings, they also make a Dual Dovetail set and a set that will fit the old Redfield style Adjustable rear base with the Dovetail front base.

For years and years, I used nothing but Weaver Rings and Bases. Then I got to buying Rugers and used their rings. Next I used the Redfield Style rings/bases on Remingtons, Savages and Winchesters. Now, the vast majority of my Remingtons wear Leupold Dual Dovetails. BUT, all my new rifles will wear Burris Signature Rings. Just too outstanding of a design to let them pass by.

And for you guys running out of "clicks" it is an excellent answer to your problem at a most "reasonable" cost.

Good hunting and clean 1-shot kills, Hot Core
