Welcome Hardy the Twin Brother of Smokin' Gun in S.C.

I have Mortally wounded Smokin' Gun in a Gunfight on a dusty street. It was somethin' that could't be helped...he winged me in the left rib cage and healing nicely.
Sorry about your Brother Hardy:O(

So you are taken over The Smokin' Gun Shop in S.C.?

SG:cool:

Yeah, Smokin. But don't know what do wif it. i shoot guns--don't fix um. Back in the war we'd shoot um pick up fresh ones all over the battle field. I had a crate of em. never took a wedge out--maybe swabbed the barrel--but i'd just throw em away when they broke. But bro's got customers t need a gunsmith and" consultant"--dang,didn't know I knew a big word--gotta write dat one down. I guess daddy might want me to giv that shop to someone that has better sense than me---So I guess you need to come take it over.

The hammer has a round protrusion on it's right side cut in at an angle. I can only guess that it has something to do with trigger and spring.

WBHARDY

That 'protrusion' is called a cam, and it engages one leg of the trigger/bolt spring. It is the genius in Mr. Sam's single action design.

Ok Smokin and McKeal--- I clean nipples with a pipe cleaner soaked in 100 proof vodka. Before reassembling them into the cylinder, I put just a touch of 3&1 oil on the threads so they don't freeze in the chambers. The chambers were cleaned w/ ballistol -water mix then dried out with Q tips. Is this a good idea?

Well the Vodka may work well specially if yer a sippin it ... :O). But I jus' soakeverythin' in hot soapy water and scrub with a nylon cleain' brish ... When dry, jus' touch the threads with a dab of oil on ly finger and thread back in snug never tight.

On the hammer I'd have to see the gin, new hammer and bolt ect. I could try to help but the shippin' would burn up any profit for you.
Now ifin ya sent me gas money or a plain ticket... :eek:LOL!

The idea is right but the execution is a bit weird. Plain old rubbing alcohol is a lot less expensive.

As for the oil, that's ok too, but there are slightly better alternatives. It's probably less expensive than anti-seize grease but there is a possible drawback. It's a petroleum distillate (although a very pure one), so if exposed to high enough temperatures it could partially burn and leave behind tar-like compounds. Those compounds may not be a problem in this application, however, as they will also prevent corrosion that could lock up the nipple threads. T/C's Gorilla Grease is not petroleum based so the possibility of a problem is eliminated. If the oil has been working for you I'd keep using it, but if you've noticed any tar the flash channel you might want to change.

rubbing alcohol has other agents. I learned this from a tobacconist--who cleans all his pipes with everclear and said don't use anyything but pure n(everclear) alcohol or 100 proof vodka at the minimum.Rubbin alcohol is a no-no and so is 80 proof vodca. EVERCLEAR my friends -I salute you! But we're tallkin about a smokin pipe. It could be all related. Maybe not. I remember when I was in school down in Georgia, a friend and hunter had a Remington 1858 and he soaked his nipples in everclear. this guy was still fighting the Civil War and his granddady told him akll kind of stuff so I bet back then they used moonshine whiskey to clean off that BP. I really do--now that I reflect back!
WBH

Well I've always been fond of EverClear ... and woulda probly gone blind drinkin' moonshine... :O)
Good suggestion Hardy sounds pure to me...

I've heard it all! I was about to post again that maybe pure grain alcohol is not good for steel and bluin. A reanactor came into the store and looked at our REMs. he wasn't sure they would pass for competition era shootin. I agreed and said the stainless steel Rem probably won't since stainless wasn't available in the day. After a brief discuss about clean/lube---- He said his regiment made up their own cleaning solution. And it was made with carburator cleaner/ alcohol/ammonia petoleum oil and some other secret stuff. Now ...Just bein' me... how does that fit in with the era!?

WBH

And Smokin---They do like those Rems---or the 1860 army colts. Um---they be both expensive---except for the Johnny Reb Brass frames. I told you I decided on a whim to dip my toes into a lake of cold water. Now I'm way below my waist!:D Throw me a rope!!

WBH

Well Hardy if ya promise not to try and drown me like a Coon would a Black & Tan in a stream I'd jump in and grab ya. What do you need?
How many new Brassers do you have? When you sell one, take that money and get a Used Steel Rem or 1860 on Gunbroker or Auctionarms for "less" than you made on that new Brasser you sold. Buy it only if it can be returned after a 3 day inspection. Sell that Used in good condition steel Rem for as much as you sell the Brassers for so you are makin' a profit and still selliin' Steel framed guns for the price of(or a lil' more)than a new Brasser. And if someone wants a new Steel frame jus' charge for shipping and maybe a 3-5% markup...see if that helps any.
Jus' a thought...

got a lyman 1860 army w/nichol backstrap and trigger guard. Do you want it. It's comin in Fri--never been fired. It'll be around 300

WBH

NO Smokin-ain't gonna drown you! I'm just tryin to figure out what all you pros like and the guys that walk in the shop are wantin and willin to buy. And most of the good guns(On all internet posts) are already sold, or askin too much. Can't find 2 or 3 generation colts anymore-Yet- that haven't already been sold at reasonable prices. Yes, you see them posted but most are gone or priced too high . Are the prices goin up or just gettin bought up cheap?. You know I have a small collection. I'd sell them for 25% more than what I paid for um(except my R.E.LEE:D) but do you think hangin on to them is a good idea. That Lyman is supposed to be a good un--I'll get yu a pic when it comes in:) Actually, it seems they want small guns like pockets and sheriffs(They too are expensive) WBH

I could tell y'all a story about nipples and Bourbon, but that was a bachlor party... kinda off topic :O)
I jus' clean um in scaldin' hot soapy water, an, rince water.

That Lyman 1860 colt is comin in tommorrow:D Supposedly made in the 70's. Never knew Lyman made em. It's nichol trigger guard and backstrap. Is that a goodun for $225 or should I send it back. You know!: Just ordering projectiles, powder etc will break yor arm. Muzzleloading seaon starts here in Oct. All the stores around have quit stockin BP stuff except Academy. We have done as much advertising and word of mouth that we can and afford. I just hope and pray that hunters and bp shooters will start comin in soon:confused: And hope my daughter's built up display of handmade jewelry and limited antiques will crank a few dollars. It does look better than the video back in May:)

wbh

Billy that Lyman you'll probly want to keep for yourself... but it should sell pretty quick.

I knew you'd ask about the nipples cleaned with Bourbon without a drop wasted...the secret of not wasting not is between me the stripper, and the rest of the Groom to be's party members :P) (twas a steady hand, her good aim, and my dedication to drinkin' Jack Daniels )
:O)

Never knew Lyman made em.
Lyman is an importer, not a manufacturer. Their current product line is made by Investarms in Italy. The revolvers have all been discontinued; I believe Uberti was the manufacturer of most of them.
