Weird dream rifles

I am a bit of a dreamer and I got thinking about about the SKS and what caliber I would like to see it in other than the 7.62x39. Then I remember a number of years ago (at least 10 or 15 years) there was a Gun Smith named Marantz that did some amazing custom work where He took 2 Lugers (basic shooters grade) patched them together and made a .45ACP LUGER. And I believed he did the same to two P-38s.
I was wondering if it could done and someone do something simular and work the SKS into something more like a larger more powerful cartridge? Not a caliber like 7.62x51 or other high-preformance cartridges, but something milder. I think a SKS in .35 Remington or some nice medium power rounds. I think the 35 Rem. would be very nice. It would be expensive but it would be very interesting, and neat and fun to shoot. The 35 Rem is a great caliber and I like it, and the SKS is also fun to shoot and I like it very much. VERY INTERESTING combination together. Just a dream. Any body got simular ideas or dreams or improvements on my dream SKS???

There were a few factory made P08's in .45ACP. They were made as trial candidates for US govt. testing along side of the 1911 for adoption by the Army. Very rare and very valuable. I know it is blasphemy but I would like a modernized M1A/M14 in .243 or .260. Lighter weight would be nice too.

Modifying the SKS receiver to handle more pressure would be complicated to say the least. The 2 45 projects you mentioned is insane mod work. In my mind, A receiver needs to be capable of 25-30 percent more pressure than the intended cartridge with out making head space to be sound for that cal. If it was something you can use away from your body, I think there would be alot more experimentation. A new receiver design is put through many thousands of rounds to determine its weak points and that alone keeps dream guns...dreams. I dont see why a FAL could not be converted to a 35 Rem. At least you know you will keep the bolt in the gun and not in your eye socket:D
I do like tinkering the SKS. I have bought wolf 1000 rd case for $179 a couple of years back & that keeps the 7.63x39 in good standing. Iv yet to paint this SKS but it uses VZ58 mags has a finned barrel, 7 way adjustable gas system, QD furniture and can hid a 5 rd. mag inside the buttstock. Flashlight & 20mw laser in the electro forend. A bit heavy but shoots great. A dream come true!

Here's a few ideas:
* Ruger 77/44 in 357/44 Bains Davis. If the used prices on the darn things would come down even a smidgeon, I would snatch one up and do it myself.

* Mauser 98 in 444 Marlin. This one is actually on my "to-do" list.

* CZ 527 in 218 Bee.

7.62x39 v/s .35 Rem

Xtriggerman,
The SKS uses the Blish breach locking method and it is not only used on the SKS, but also in the FAL, FN-49 and a few other rifle systems. So the breach lock up is a viable method.

Also the SAMMI breach pressure for the 7.62x39 is higher than the 35 Rem.
7.62x39mm == 51,400 psi
.35 Remington = is under 46,000 psi

So the Strength is there and the Breach Pressure should not be a major concern.

The major problems would be the Bolt, Bolt carrier and Magazine length, length of travel for the bolt carrier group.

I'm not different I guess, I thinking about building wierd rifles. ONLY not based on some "commie" gun.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a NM M1 Garand, with a 1:8 twish 270 Win barrel so I could shoot those fancy Matrix 175 gn High BC bullets. Of course I'd have to put in an adjustable gas system to take the higher pressure of the 270 Win.

I think that would be a heck of a 1000 yard military style rifle.

Sometime in the late 70s or early 80s someone was chambering the M1A in 358 Winchester, they were advertizing it as the perfect defense rifle if you got cornered in a phone booth by a raging Grizly.

Dream Rifle

Xtriggerman,
I keep comming back to look at that picture you have posted. It seems to be a SKS and a FAL married together. If it is real and functioning that is a "WONDER DREAM COME-TRUE".

I like it!!!!!! WOW!!!

I have a couple......

Browning BL-22 in .32 Smith and Wesson

M1 Garand in .35 Whelen

Ruger PC series carbine in 10mm

Budd, So much for off the cuff pressure thinking on the (much beefier looking)35. vs x39. If thats the case, a 35 rem should be a nice conversion. The SKS bolt has alot of over travel past the cartridge. It looks like the bolt face needs to be opened up a tad. By the looks of a 35 in the well, the magazine to be used will need to be exactly fit to the 35 OAL. Trimming the front and shaving the bolt stop may actually work. Auto hold open may not be possible but a manual extension to the bolt stop will. It all hinges around the mag box to be used. A fixed, w/ floor plate like a bolt gun can fix the auto bolt hold open problem with a fab-ed follower to work it. It looks doable! & yes that pictured SKS is my second one Iv built. The first one uses AK mags with the QD FAL lower as this one.

An M1-A in .25-06. An accurized one, more like the M-25, with a 4-12 variable scope.

A Speed Goat hunter's dream.

I liked the concept of the M-1 Carbine, but not the .30 Carbine round.

I always thought the .30 Carbine should have been chambered in .276 Pedersen.

I always thought the M1 Carbine should have been chambered in 45 WinMag. That would be a nice little thumper and would put all you guys M4's to shame.:D

Magazine

Xtriggerman
I agree with you a bolt-action blind magazine would be the way to go. But is there enough room to increase the magazine well length 0.458 inch?? And is there enough bolt carrier group travel length to accomadate the nearly half inch length increase of the magazine?

M-1 carbine like rifle

Edward429451

Look at a Ruger Deerfield carbine. It action is just an M-1 Carbine scaled up and modified to fire the .44 Remington Magnum. And did you know the .50 Action Express cartridge rim has the exact same diameter as the rim of the 44 Remington Magnum?

How does a carbine that looks, handle, carries and operates like M-1 carbine but fires the Mighty .50 A.E. cartridge sounds to you? That sounds like another wonderful Dream Rifle/Carbine. It would be a THUMPER of a short range deer rifle.

True, but the Deerfield isn't magazine fed.

Manipulating the tube feed is kinda tricky to me, especially when wearing gloves.

SPEMack618,
You are thinking of the Old model 44 mag carbine.
The 99/44 Deerfield came out in 1999 and uses a 4 round rotory box magazine so it can feed the rimmed rounds of the 44 Mag. If you could open up the feeding rails of the action and make a ten round magazine that can use the Ruger magazine latch and lock properly in place it could I believe would work.

Now that we're laying the wishing game...

An StG 44 replica in 7.62x39 that takes AK mags.
A full-auto, SBR'ed 9mm Thompson that somehow was magically legal to own.

And, just for range giggles...

A Dillon Aero M134 in .22LR.
