Weekly Wal-mart Trip

Every Wednesday I trek across the road from my office and visit the Wal-mart. It's mainly to re-stock my office freezer with frozen dinners, grab a coke, and pick up anything that the wife might need mid-week. I usually swing past the outdoors section and peruse anything that might be of interest. (Garden area this time of year and ammo cabinet year round).

Wal-mart, being what it is, is usually poorly stocked on ammo. It seemed that they had just gotten a shipment of WWB. Having recently acquired a XDm 9mm I was looking for some inexpensive range ammo to burn through. To my pleasant surprise the also had .45 ACP in WWB, which is usually very hard to come by in Wal-marts around these parts. So joy for all! In all $19 and change for 100 rds 9mm and $32 and change for 100 rds of .45 ACP. I thought it was a pretty good deal.

I do have some complaints though. I do recognize that this is Wal-mart so please take these with a grain of salt. The Wal-mart is in a very nice area of Plano, it's literally down the street from the former polo fields (yeah the ones that had the 1 million+ subdivion grow up around it). I get not having someone working the sporting good area full-timeit was a bit irksome to have automotive page someone back to their area. Once I did get a person though they produced keys to the ammo cabinet quickly and got me what I needed.

Second gripe, one of their boxes of 9mm looked like the glue securing the bottim had come up. The clerk asked if I was okay buying that box. I really wasn't but it kinda irked me that he asked. I'm probably being picky and as I write this, I'm like "eh, no big deal that he asked." At the time (20 minutes ago) it really irked me.

Okay now random question. I usually get the "when were you born question" when I buy handgun ammo. This time I got the "Is this for a handgun?" Funny thing was that they specifically asked regarding the .45 ammo. I thought that was kinda weird, any thoughts.

I know it's Wal-mart and I know that many of the folks working there may barely know how to tie a shoelace, but I welcome any comments to generate discussion.

I guess the take away is: "Yea! Now I have ammo to shoot my new XDm." In all a good trip to Wally World...off to lunch to enjoy my Lean Cuisine.

Wal Mart's registers are programmed to ask those questions of the clerk, so that's just one of those things to expect from time to time. Depending upon the clerk he or she may or may not ask you that question, but the register has probably asked them.

Yep. They probably find the questions just as annoying as you do. Some probably are irked by them and just hit Yes when prompted, but I can't fault anyone for following the prompts.

I hate Walmart, for all the usual reasons, but I will admit that when it is in stock they do have good prices on range ammo. So if and only if I have to go to Walmart I will check in the ammo section, and stock up if needed.

We might also remember that most popular handguns rounds, including .45 ACP, and be used in rifles. I suspect that would further confuse the Wally-World personnel.

Last time I was in there I got the "I'm guessing you're over 21". Yeah, a little bit. Not sure why they ask about the handgun though.

Why did asking if you were ok with that box irk you? If you didn't want it, just say so. Maybe I'm misreading it but it seems better than not asking at all.

I've also found that what is in the case, although that's not a great variety, is not all that they have (sometimes). I've bought cases of WWB that they have to go to the back to get so they didn't wipe out the display. From what I've seen, it's hard to beat the prices if you have to factor in shipping.

Next time just tell them no, it's for my Thompson sub-machine gun!:D

Just walked in from walmart. WWD box of 100 9mm was $22.97. Thought that was okay til I saw this.

Same!!

Now they got some cleaning supplys locked in the glass cabit, I guess they do not want people cleaning their guns. :barf:

I'd be careful. Most clerks would find it amusing, but there are probably a few that won't know you are kidding.

Who is kidding....:D

They are legal to own.

When I buy 9mm which is not often due to reloading I tell them an Uzi.

Let them figure it out.

I bought a box of .45 at my local Wally World and the lady never asked me any questions. I have never been asked in the past either.

yo op, do you look like you're over 21?

i'm 64 and feel great when they card me for alcohol, procedure is procedure, live with it or buy elsewhere.

Why were you annoyed that he asked if it was OK? This doesn't make much sense. You should have been annoyed if he didn't ask, and just handed you the damaged box.

And if you had a problem buying that box, why didn't you say so when he asked, and have him give you a different box?

Awe man, i gotta get a 9mm. Last box of WWB 38spl was $34 & last box of Rem 357mag was $44 per 100.

Next time-->

WM: "Is this for a handgun"

You: "whichever's cheaper"

WM: "ok. wait, what?"

:)

I'll do it if ya'll will :)

My local Wallyworld is usually well stocked on ammo, and for much cheaper than my local gun store. My only gripe is the morons who work at the counter.
I went in to buy a box of .45 acp ammo, and the guy behind the counter kept handing me the wrong ammo until his 4th try, got the right box-then he tried to ring up the three boxes of wrong ammo he tried to give me! Thank you mother for teaching me patience.

We must be lucky

The Walmart in central Kansas is usually well stocked and the people there are pretty good. I know a couple pretty well by sight, one by name, we chat guns, ammo and what is coming in and going out. They tell me bad reports on some ammo, what prices are expected to do and keep the place looking good. One goes to the same indoor range (the only one we have) although I have not seen him actually shooting. We have shotguns and rifles at our WM and they take pretty good care of things. I cannot complain except that I wish they would handle reloading products like the WM in McCook, Nebraska does.
