Weatherby Vanguard 25/06

rshanneck2002 i too have struggled with ruger and there accuracy claims. I had a 257 roberts ultralite that was a 3 inch gun that they would do nothing about. It was a tang saftey gun that i bought used. They did though rebarrel my new 264 mag that was showing pressure signs at very low levels of loads. Back to the 257. I did at the end of this year firelap the gun and it did show some improvement but still isnt right. thing is i do want a 257 and to sell it and look for another is tough because right now the only ones chambering it are weatherby and if you look hard you can find a rem cdl in 257. My plan at this time is to try lapping it once more next summer and at the same time hope that a deal on a cdl comes along when i can afford it. If so the weatherby will go down the road.

Yeah your right RShanneck it seams like a luck of the draw thing but iv decided to get rid of the Vangaurd and get a Tikka.I went and checked out A CZ,Ruger and the Tikka and apparently CZ dont make a 25/06 and the hawkeye dont have detachable magazine so it will be a pretty easy choice. They where all beautiful guns though and i guess you cant go wrong with any of them.

Aussie Clive: You're doing the right thing in getting rid of a rifle with a bad barrel. Too many people would spend all kinds of time and money to try turning a sow's ear into a silk purse. I hate hearing about bad rifles coming out of companies with formerly good names, but it seems to be getting more prevalent in the past few years.

Everyone is trying to cut costs in manufacturing and big buyers, who want big shipments NOW, but expect to pay less than necessary to guarantee reasonable quality, are contributing to poor quality.

25-06

AH yes CZ 550? Own one in 30-06 and love it to death. Accurate right out of the box with 3/4 in groups with simple remington corelokts 150 gr and you are right i wish they did build one in 25-06 they dont. Heavy Mauser at roughly 8lbs though, excellent stand rifle. Never owned a tikka and have often thought about buying one in 6.5 swede. Oh well one is always one in my future. Just bought a used Sako M995 for $500 in prime condition (.300 WinMag) initial range firing fantastic and they build the Tikkas. Also somewhat on the heavy side but glad about that being a magnum cal, is my first magnum after 57 yrs couldnt resist the price and condition of the rifle. Good impluse buy. Just got the Stevens 200 for $300 and if sure outshoots the Hawkeye but GOOD with simple Fed Powershoks 117 gr. No where as pretty though., Ruger getting traded for my next rifle. Maybe a Tikka?

I called weatherby to inquire about a custom stock. Keep in mind I have purchased an H&S precision stock before so know what I should get for the money. I told them I wanted the stock for a hog hunt that was about 6 weeks away. They quoted me the price which was well above an H&S so I though I would ask if they would give me the option to choose length of pull. Nada. Nope that would be extra which I didn't agree with. Also no can do sir we can't get it to you in 6 weeks so you can take it hunting. I said to heck with that. Not good enough service. I got the distinct feeling that I wasn't anyone too special to them.
Now as to the rifle. Sell it and get a Tikka, or Sako. Life is too short to mess around with guns that won't shoot especially if they are from Japan.

Yeah i love my cz 550 too Rshanneck,i picked mine up 2nd hand with a cheapy scope(Silver Antler) for $300.Its in beautiful condition but its a 308win which is a bit big for my intended use.The barrel is pretty worn so my plan was to get a new barrel in 260rem or 7mm 08 but it shot great from the 1st time i used it so iv postponed the rebarrel job until it starts to deteriorate. As for your thoughts on possibly getting a Tikka guys i cant recommend them enough.Iv got a Tikka 243 and a Sako 22 250 and while the Sako is definately the "nicer" of the two i dont know if you could justify the extra expense. My Tikka just shoots great every time and you dont even have to think about it doing the job.The Sako's are definately a beautiful gun and if money is no object id buy one every time but here in OZ they are $2000 compared to the $1300 for a Tikka.

Over the years I have purchased various brands, models of new and used bolt action rifles in different calibers. Used rifles barrels are cleaned and the barrel action is removed from the stock. With the bolt removed ,spray brake cleaner is used to blast the action clean. The stock action bedding and barrel channel are inspected for incorrect contact points. Any wood that has ben contacting the side of the barrel is removed. I then lub the action and assemble the rifle for test fireing. To get a inaccurate new or used rifle to shoot smaller groups you my have to give the rifle a tune up, which may include one or more of the following: Glass bed the action, free float the barrel, adjust or replace the trigger, lapp the bolt locking luggs, and recrown the barrel. Also every rifle barrel is a bit different so one must develope reloaded ammo to find what the rifle likes to get it to smaller groups..

Since when does a weatherby warranty run out? I've never heard of such. Give them a call, and they will take care of you. They are one of the few companies that will now days.

Did tikka or sako send you a custom stock more to your time line and price expectation? Not trying to start anything, just curious.

Have you made sure the stock is not touching the barrel in spots it is not supposed to touch?

I have seen more than a few new Remington that had stocks so warped they looked like a taco.

As to my earlier post about my Remington 700. I did in fact have the stock shaved down a bit to get it off the barrel. That's the nature of the polymer mass produced stocks.

rifles

Ruger bless their soul, i wont buy another one of their rifles have owned three. A MINI-14 (4 to 6 in groups at 100) a .270 M-77 and a new Hawkeye in 25-06. None were shooters and i know of people who own very good ones. Ruger in my mind are not real consistant in producing very good barrels at all. People say it has gotten better recently but my range time says different and at $600-800 a pop not again. 223,.270, and 25-06 should all shoot right at an inch with factory ammo to say the least. The new Hawkeye trigger is a vast improvement over the trigger on the M-77 though. I dont know why the Mini bothered me though it hung along with my Saigas in 7.62x39 but not the ones in 223 though.,(minute of torso) Its a shame though because the new Hawkeye is a very beautiful rifle for the money. Just the luck of the draw i guess? Next fall my ugly Stevens 200 will be my woods beater in 25-06.,Savage can make barrels that shoot and my buds will tell me how butt ugly it is at the lodge next fall.

I had a problem with my Savage 110FLP 25/06 for a while. The barrels were left overs from the discontinued tactical 25/06.The bore looked like a washboard, and would copper foul so bad that it would take 2-3 days to clean all of it out of the bore.
I hand lapped the barrel twice with little results each time.As a last chance effort before swapping barrels,I shot a complete batch of the Tubbs Final Finish bullets thru it,and now it shoots like it should-1/4" to 1/2" groups everytime out.
It was a learning experience, and I'm glad that I didn't just scrap the barrel.

I own 2 Weatherby Vanguards one in .300wby and the other in .257wby and I have found their general groupings to be around an inch or a little less at 100yd. This is with handloaded ammo. I cant complain since they are just deer rifles. Try looking at the stock I have had some buddys tell me that they did some stock work and bedding work to improve it greatly.

Vanguard 270

Hi, New here, I ran across your forum looking for the same answer. I have a older 270 Weatherby Vanguard, stock has been glass bedded, barrel floated with 8 lb pressure on end, action is bedded with aluminum pillows, Trigger set at 2 lb. bolt lapped. This is a wood stock rifle that my wife shot 10 to 15 years ago. We stoped shooting for a while just started back this year. Loaded some 130 ballistic tips with IMR 4350 cleaned the bore and fired away. First group of 5 was under half inch OD GREAT. Next day same gun same bullet same place, gun would not hold a 2 inch group. Did this 3 times, any help would be great.
Thanks
