On the good news side, for the first time I can remember, the antis are spending a lot of time and effort trying to repeal previous laws rather than force new laws down our throat (though as you can see, they still devote the majority of time and effort to that). It shows what eight years of playing offense can do to help protect our rights during the more trying times. I think the memo also gives gun owners a peek at what the more "moderate" Brady Campaign is trying to achieve after having been foiled on their original goal of banning handguns (everybody here at TFL surely remembers the original name of the Brady Campaign, right?)

More importantly, by better understanding the laws the Brady Campaign is proposing, we will better understand what type of effect these laws may have on our rights.

On a related note, I noticed there appears to be a lot of confusion about what legislation has actually been proposed in the 111th Congress. Here is the list from http://thomas.loc.gov/ showing every bill currently proposed in the 111th Congress (right now it is still pretty short so I can post the entire list even though there are no items related to firearms, I expect that to change by January 31)

Broadcaster Freedom Act of 2009
Fair Tax Act of 2009
Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009
Health Protection Amendment of 2009
Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009
Paycheck Fairness Act
Presidential Library Donation Reform Act of 2009
Presidential Records Act Amendments of 2009
Stronger Economy, Stronger Borders Act of 2009

This is almost exactly the kind list I had in mind. Good enough to be stickied.

I suggest that the bills be listed with the following format:

Bill # ; Name/Title ; Introduced by/sponsor ; # of co-sponsors ; current status. Short description of the bill, if possible

A perma-link if known could also be added. Otherwise, some of you will just have to learn to use Thomas, to view the bills.

Let's use this thread only for listing the proposed legislation or showing that a bill was defeated.

Keep all discussions out of this thread. Start a new thread to discuss individual pieces of Legislation.
