Now that we have a new president, I think we can all agree that this is a time for healing.

But first . . .

I've been staring at a map for several hours now: It breaks down the presidential vote county by county for the entire country, and it leads to a certain scientific observation about the nature of George W.
Bush's victory. Some of you may find this to be an uncharitable observation, one that might even betray a subtle liberal-elite media bias. I assure you, nothing could be further from the truth.

This was a victory for the hicks. A hicktory!

Here are the names of some counties that went heavily for Gore: New York County, N.Y.; Philadelphia County, Pa.; Los Angeles County, Calif.; Milwaukee County, Wis.; Honolulu County, Hawaii;
St. Louis County, Mo.

Here are the names of some counties that went heavily for Bush: Alfalfa County, Okla.; Antelope County, Neb.; Tallapoosa County, Ala.; Ozark County, Mo.; Lumpkin County, Ga.; Pottawatomie
County, Kan; Yoakum County, Tex.

On this map, counties that voted for Bush are red; those for Gore are blue. The map is basically a wash of red. This is because most of the Gore counties are geographically small but densely populated;
the Bush counties are, to put it mildly, not. For example, Bush kicked Gore's butt in Elko County, Nev., which is (true fact) slightly larger than Denmark. Elko County has nearly three people per square
mile. I phoned the Elko visitors bureau and learned that the main yearly local event is the "Man-Mule Race," where a man races a mule 25 miles from Elko to Lamoille. There is also a Festival of Trees.

Now I know I cannot dismiss all residents of rural areas as "hicks." A responsible journalist can't make an unfair generalization like that. He has to first find a pretext. So I decided to come up with a
scientific yardstick of sophistication, some way I could empirically gauge the degree to which an area consists of persons like me, as opposed to persons like Goober Pyle, Gomer's less sophisticated
brother. I decided on "bookstores per capita."

Feeding this term into an Internet search engine, I discovered that the one place in America with the most bookstores per capita is Madison, Wis. . . . Also, um, Tucson.

And Seattle. And Ann Arbor, Mich. And Charlottesville. And Ithaca, N.Y. And Portland, Ore. And Boulder, Colo. (Most of these are official chamber-of-commerce-type claims -- suggesting that, from
an accuracy standpoint, chambers of commerce rank somewhere between time-share telephone solicitors and National Park Service crowd estimators.)

But my point is, Gore won every county that each of these bragging brie-and-brioche cities is in.

Whereas he did not win Fergus Falls, Minn., in Otter Tail County.

Am I getting through here?

Everywhere on this map that you see a little island of blue in a sea of red, you find a reason. All of cowpokey Nevada went for Bush except the one county that contains . . . yep, Las Vegas. All of Idaho
went robustly for Bush except for one seahorse-shaped county in the south central part of the state. For some reason, Gore won Blaine County. Why?

I telephoned Blaine County Commissioner Len Harlig. I phrased the question as delicately as possible, knowing that local government leaders are often masters of diplomacy, respectful of their
neighbors. Why did Blaine alone go for Gore?

"It is because we are well-educated," Harlig said. His neighbors in adjoining counties, he noted dryly, are largely involved in the profession of "resource extraction." Miners and farmers, he means.

Blaine County, it turns out, is home to Sun Valley, the posh resort. A large percentage of its residents, Harlig said, have moved there from places like San Francisco and Chicago. For its 20,000
inhabitants, Blaine County provides several dance and theatrical companies, four public libraries, and lots of bookstores, including one called Iconoclast Books. Hicks? I think not.

Now, I know that this column is not quote unquote nice. And yes, I admit it is theoretically possible to live in a rural area and be quite the sophisticate; I am certain that much of the outraged mail I will
be receiving from sputtering bumpkins will be spelled and punctuated correctly. Still, it won't rattle me. One of the perils of being an objective journalist is that one must occasionally deliver unpleasant
truths to those who will then unfairly accuse one of hostile stereotyping or intellectual dishonesty.

As this column was going to press, I found a news report about a bank robber who forgot to bring a bag for his loot. That meant he had to stuff all the cash into his pockets and socks, until it was
bulging out. As he ran away, he left a mile-long trail of bills. Within an hour he was tracked and apprehended.

Turns out this gentleman was a local feller, a native son of Inman, S.C. ("The Fresh Peach Capital of the World").

Inman is in Spartanburg County.

Went for Bush, big time.

Proud to be a hick...

if that's what it means to have voted for Bush. And proud that I have vacated some of my past living quarters in those Gore-loving places like Ann Arbor, Michigan and Broward County, Florida. *whew* close call...

So... I live in Alabama in a county named after a great indian chief. Does that make me a hick? I dunno, but I did vote for Bush! :D

Of course, bear in mind that Weingarten's last couple of articles were on Britney Spears and on a seminar by self-help guru Anthony Robbins. Now, THERE'S some intellectual reading...

:D

Don't ya just love tongue in cheek. :)
__________
Armed women are citizens.. un-armed women are subjects and/or rape targets.
-
True safety is in the Lord, but precaution is sound wisdom.
-
Constitution of the State of Alabama, 1901, ARTICLE 1 [Declaration of Rights], SECTION 26: Right to bear arms. That every citizen has a right to bear arms in defense of himself and the state.

Gore's best group demographically was people with less than a high school education. Of that group, 59% voted for Gore, only 39% for Bush. College grads, on the other hand, went 51% to 45% for Bush.

Unfortunately for Gore, there were not quite enough stupid voters to put him over the top.

I saw that condescending, smug, elitist article...

I grew up on an Island, but I guess I'm a hick, too.
I've owned and run several business, but I've also done a lot of manual labor, skilled labor, and blue-collar work- I guess I'm still a hick at heart.

I'd rather talk to a plain-speaking regular guy who cusses like a pirate, but speaks the truth, from the heart, than waste a minute with a smooth liar ( like the 'Toonz... )- I guess that makes me a hick as well.

But I mainly am today is proud to be an American again!
Maybe that makes me a hick, too...

So what?
Who cares?

I wonder what this A**wipe has to say about Fairfax County, Virginia.

It's one of the most affluent counties in the United States, yet it went to George W. Bush.

Well, that's because Ralph Nader split the Democratic Vote. More than 12,000 cow-hugging morons in this county voted for Nader, more than enough to give Bush a very handy win!

County Democratic leaders were, to put it mildly, apoplectic!

I've been working closely with my County Supervisor, by all measures a pretty good guy, except that he's anti-gun and a Democrat. I busted his chops UNMERCIFULLY over this. :)

My letter to the author

Mr. Weingarten:

"an objective journalist"?

Anyone truly sophisticated knows there is no such thing. It is simply a concept advanced by "sophisticated" journalists trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the sheeple.

I will alert you to two facts concerning the "sophistication" of Gore voters.

Education

Gore's best group demographically was people with less than a high school education. Of that group, 59% voted for Gore, only 39% for Bush. College grads, on the other hand, went 51% to 45% for Bush.

Crime

Crime rates in the "voted-Bush" counties are a fraction of the rates in the "voted-Gore" counties.
Avg Murder per 100,000 residents in counties won by Gore: 13.2
Avg Murder per 100,000 residents in counties won by Bush: 2.1

To me, this speaks volumes about the "sophistication" of
Gore voters, and the conditions under which they are willing to live.

I, personally, am thankful for the end of our eight year nightmare.

Sincerely,

JimR

Well, it may be true that some of those folks who voted for W may inhabit some of the more rural areas of our great land. Or maybe those...people... who voted for Al jr. live in areas that have lots of book stores.

The fact of the matter is that W's costituents are smart enough to WORK A FRIGGIN' VOTING MACHINE!

Full stop...end of story.

Regards,
S.

I will E-mail that buffoon and inform him that these "hicks" are the people that feed him and send their sons and brothers to protect him .

What do you expect???

Guy's and Gal's..........
This is why, we MUST prevail..........
These pseudo intellectuals, think they are ENTITLED to ALL, and no one but they, are able to discern what is "BEST", for we Hicks.............
After all, we live in "Flyover", country.........
Liberals are the cancer of our society, they are best known for being VERY generous, with OPM........
They think, they are the sole arbiters of truth and right and wrong.........
And we had just get used to the idea, that THEY know what's best for Us'ns...........(:@)

The first ammendment gives Mr. Weingarten the right to say aloud or in print anything he wants. It's just too bad the first ammendment doesn't let us hicks respond with a clue by four.

JimR

Assuming you actually sent that letter to the reporter, please share with us any response you get, if you please.

Thanks

One of the "Hicks" (by choice) and glad of it. ;)

Guys, guys, don't be so harsh. This poor big city hillbilly needs our pity and compassion, not our anger. He's still stuck in the last century counting bookstores, even with the answer right in front of him--the internet!

If you deal drugs in the inner city, it's society's fault. Those who call you "drug dealer" or gangster are insensitive and ignorant.
If you're gay and people call you names, they just don't understand you or are afraid of the unknown.
But if you live in a small town and drive a pickup, and people call you names, they're eminent journalists. :D

Start laughing at this stuff now, folks. It's only the beginning. Remember what the liberals have endured for the last 8 years. (Well, the ones who understood the jokes, anyway.)

So how many of those bookstores were "Adult" Bookstores? How about if the urbane sophisticate runs an analysis pitting counties for Bush vs Gore and correlates it with the number of Christian bookstores to pornography bookstores respectively. Then write an article explaining how it was scientifically proven that Gore won the his counties riding the "porn vote". I'd bet dollars to donuts that it works out almost 100% correlation.

Oh yeah, I am hick with a Chemistry BSc and MBA.

If they're so smart and we're so dumb, how come they didn't know which hole to punch or when the polls closed?

echo3mike-

Right on the f-in money. Perhaps we need a constitutional ammendment... "Henceforth, the party whose constituency is smart enough to work a voting machine shall recieve the majority of the electors." That would ensure republican hegemony for at least a century or so!

I just love how this POS stereotypes nearly half of this nation's voters with one broad stroke. If a columnist had written an article stating that Gore's core support came from inner city high school drop-outs on welfare, he or she would probably be brought up on hate crime charges.

I was just old enough to follow politics during Reagan's administration, and I remember the constant barrage of BS he was subjected to by the democraps and the media. Folks, this is just the beginning. Get ready for the sh- ah, poop storm of the century.

On the other hand, I notice that GW is already looking at blocking and/or rescinding some of Bubba's EO's... perhaps the democraps are about to get a nasty surprise, as the new President may turn out not to be the creampuff they seem to think he is.

Regards,

Trouble

P.S. As a resident of affluent Fairfax County Virginia with advanced degrees in engineering, I take personal offence to this a-hole's characterization of Bush voters. I live in Gene Weinergarten's stomping grounds... if I ever run into that patronizing POS, I'll beat him till he can't even suffer.

I'm proud to say that my suburban county is one of the most affluent in NJ, AND went for Bush.

Think about it...who's smarter - the folks that live IN the city or those that have moved OUT of the cities :p

I agree with the member who coined the term for the red areas of the now famous county map - "Entitlement Zones".
