Washing clothes.

I saw a buck walk up on my buddy within 25yds smoking:eek:.

It was probably due to the wind but like i said before the deer will smell you no matter what you put on your clothes.

Ya'll have had your time now I will poke a hole in the theory... Deer will not often give up a proven route of travel. Take some freshly dirty laundry to your spot and hang it here and there. Go back often and swap it out. Days before season go pull it all out. Betcha dollars to doughnuts the deer won't worry much about human scent as it is not "new" to the area.

:DI was just poking around one of my favorite web sites (Drudgereport.com) and saw this link to a news article http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/3414573/Odourprinting-could-be-used-to-identify-people.html . It talked about "odour printing" everyone has a distinct smell, no matter what. Even if you eat garlic, or whatever. They're talking about using this like finger printing or DNA printing. If that is the case, as far as your "smell", washing your clothes in whatever, will not make you smell like less of a human to an animal that relies heavily on it's sense of smell to identify what's out there. I would say "IMHO", but there is some scientific data there to back my point. :D

I don't worry too much about what I wash my clothes with. I usually use a very small amount of whatever detergent we have around the house or I'll just wash them in hot water. We use a cover scent prior to heading to our spots.

Using these methods, I'vd literally had deer walk within 5 feet of me on several occasions and I hunt on the ground.

Where we now elk hunt, we set up and camp for two weeks. For two years now, we have had elk, and yes bulls walk right through our camp on their way down to the fields at night. Within 20 yards of our camper, 30 or 40 yds. of the outhouse; go figure. Yeah, we still spend a fortune on scent spray, scent wash, scent wipes, etc.. If nuthin else, it keeps us from smellin so skanky after two weeks in the woods. jd

If you are going to experiment with this technique, this is what I did....

Our old washer and dryer was beat up and tired, so I broke down and got a new set (front loaders - 4 kids, two parents on a farm generate a lot of dirty clothes).

The old ones got relocated to my barn and are solely mine. Any stink I put in them will not earn the wrath of my better-half...

Maybe pick up a used set from Craig's List or a garage sale and set them up in your garage.

Effectiveness of all my efforts - no noticeable effect on my hunting success or failure. But it is fun to smell like dirt and dead leaves anyway!:D
