Wanting to get into hunting, have questions.

I dont feel he is mentaly capable yet, nor mature enough to handle guns yet

Joking, right. 22 months? Maybe let him get the potty training thing down first...:p

feel that by 4-5 he'll be old enough to join us shooting

Only thing I have learned with my kids is each one is different, and they will let you know if they are interested and when they are ready. My 7-year-old isn't very interested right now, but my 5-year-old wants to shoot either the bb gun or the bow every night.

Ah dogs and hunting

Here's my two cents:

As mentioned in previous posts, "buy cheap" and "try all", make sure this sport is for you. No need to spend your retirement fund right now. (That will come later):D

As for Dogs:
In 2000 I bought a Yellow Lab Pup, CRATE trained her from the get go. Read every book I could find on Obediance & Bird Dog Training. At 6 months old I began my training. At a 1 1/2 years old she was taken out for her first hunt (started in the field with Quail & a freinds proven pointer) She was confused at first but as the pointer worked the area she caught on quickly (never looked back since) we worked are way up to Duck in 2 years. Greatest retreiver I've ever had. My point is, take your time and you will both love the sport. That dog is my best bud/freind. She's 8 now and still has the robust nature of a 1 year old, always wants to hunt & never wants to quit.

Hope you have a large yard and 15+ years, dogs are like children a life long commitment.

Davlandrum, i wasnting trying to stir up any bees with my comment. I know that it is entirely up to them as to when they start shooting and what not. I was just simply stating the facts so the others would know what im working with kid wise lol. I cant wait to get them started in the shooting sports. I just cant believe it took me this long to find hunting.

The thing im woundering about is how long is a regular days hunt? RIght now in Indiana you can only take 2 aday. Id hate to make my tag limit in the first 15mins of a hunt. that would bum me out alot. Tho i bet its not like deer hunting which can take several weeks to just kill one(from what i have heard).

I was thinking of a golden labradore retriever. I met some, and there were beautiful and nice dogs. I assume that they would work good for what i want in the future?

I have so many thoughts and things going through my head about this. I am excited to start something I may possibly enjoy for the rest of my life, and yet im kinda scared and nervous.

In the end, ill have a nice home defence shot gun.

P.S how reliable are semi autos?

Semi's are great guns, BUT i am going to go out on a limb here and say stop asking us and start asking your father in law about this stuff....

Here's why,

As you develop a better relation with him over the subject of hunting, shotguns, which dog, etc, your wife is going to be very happy. Making your wife very happy is going to make your father in law very happy, and you will learn more and get far more out of it if you let him show his happiness and satisfaction over his daughters choice of a hubby. I was lucky, i have a great father in law who loved the idea that I was always happy to get a call that something on the farm needed work on. It's worked out far better than I could ever have hoped for.

Its not that we are unwilling to help, but sometimes the best help is right there in your back yard.

I agree, maybe i should ask him about the guns, but the dog and hunting questioins are beyond him. He dosent hunt, he supports it, but dosent have much time for it. He is a large animal vet and he gets really busy around this time.

Nice offer from the F I L... Pick a broke in (already scratched) gun and have him do a cleaning with you so you know how he expects his guns cared for. Hate to return it in a condition he don't care for. Sounds like the advise here has you headed in the right direction.

Your never too old to start hunting. my dad didn't start untill he was 36. Also, beagles make good hunting dogs and very good friends. the best dog i ever had was a beagle
