wanting a 9mm handgun, need suggestions

thanks for the suggestions guys.
heres something else i didnt think about. i have a taurus pt940 40 cal, i could find a pt911 slide assembly and magazine and put it on the 940 frame since they are the same...that would definitely be the most cost effective

To do what with? The action type doesn't really matter, but what you want to do with it does.
Go try 'em on for size, first. Moreso if you have short/small hands. Most DA's won't fit. The CZ-75 doesn't either. Would have bought one instantly when they first came to Canada in the early 80's, but it's too big for my hand. BHP fit's perfectly though. So does a Glock. Those are kind of slippery without the Pachmayr grip thingy though.

I'm really surprised nobody has mentioned the FNH FNS-9 concerning striker fire pistols yet; 100% ambidextrous, comes with 3 mags, and are priced pretty reasonable.

Other striker-fires (from personal experience):
Sig P320
HK VP9
Walther P99 AS
Walther PPQ
Glock 19
Steyr M9-A1
Ruger SR9/SR9C

For a hammer-fire, my first choice hands down is the CZ P-07.

Others (again from personal experience):
CZ P-01
Beretta PX4
HK P2000
Sig P229

And even though it isn't made anymore, the Ruger P95.

Those are all decent guns but personally I would not buy any of them for plinking/range shooting like you said is what you are planning on using it for. Out of those three I would say go with Glock though just because they are great work horses.

However if you are looking for a gun that is fun to shoot I would avoid all 3 of those and go with a SIG P226 or P229... I have several Glocks and several SIGs and when I hit the range I without a second thought grab the SIG, it is just a way more enjoyable shooting experience in every possible way, especially the trigger and just general feel in the hand. Just my opinion.

I'd go with the XD or the G17, depending on what fits you better. Both are premier handguns.

The primary difference in the real world is the grip safety, loaded chamber and cocked indicator on the XD. Also, I believe the Glock does not have a supported chamber (pre gen 4) but the XDs do. So that's important to note.
And of course the ergos and trigger pull. The XDs I've handled and shot seem to have a soft and long creepy pull.

Both are excellent. I personally prefer the simplicity of the Glock but the XD is a near perfect substitute.

another question for you guys. whats the difference between the different XD models (XD, XDs, XDm)?

and also would going to a 4.5 inch barrel as opposed to a 5.25 effect accuracy any real amount?

The xd is the original design.

The XDs is the small single stack.

The XDm is an updated version of the original. Different grip and aesthetic.

Overall they have the same action.

Mechanical accuracy would probably not be affected, but a longer barrel usually means a longer sight radius, which aids the shooter in being more accurate.

after seeing the thread about the military's new handgun program or whatever, and doing some research on my own, i think im going to lean towards holding out until the beretta apx comes out. i really like the way it looks and should do what i want nicely

Overall they have the same action.

Well...I don't know about that...

I do know the triggers in my stock XDms' feel much better than any of the stock XD or XDs I've felt.

With my larger hands, I couldn't get a comfortable grip on the Glock grip. Some of my fingers would be on top of the ridges instead of in the valleys. The Glock grip angle also did not work with my natural "point".

I've lost count of the number of rounds run through my 9mm 4.5 XDm during the past six years, but it's in the thousands. The 5.25 XDm, in 45 Auto, is a more recent addition, but has been impressive to date in function and grouping. Recommend the XDm if you get tired of waiting for the new Beretta.

The two XDm's are mostly used in IDPA matches, although the 4.5 is sometimes conceal carried in a Crossbreed Super Tuck.

Another plastic fantastic striker fired pistol worthy of consideration would be a S&W M&P.

My down right fun to run range gun is a steel frame 40S&W Jericho DA/SA (a CZ clone).

Out of the ones you listed I would get the Glock, but if I had other options then I would get a FNS-9 or go to AIM Surplus and get one of the S&W M&P 9 LEO trade-in's for $349.95.

oh nice haha. Maybe since they want to use it as their entry for the military's deal, they will put a rush on it. wishful thinking right?
