wanting a 9mm handgun, need suggestions

hi all,
recently i got the bug for a 9mm handgun. ive done a bit of research, and have my choices narrowed down quite a bit.

1. Springfield XDm 5.25
2. Ruger SR9
3. Glock 17

out of those, which would you pick and why?
a friend of mine has the XDm, and i really like how that gun shoots.
this will be a plinking gun. probably wont do any competitions any time soon, but i like to hit what i aim at :p

also, if anyone has any other suggestions for guns i should look into, feel free. thanks

Personally I would pick the G17. However, I recommend that if all possible for you to handle and shoot them first then pick the one that fits you best.

I'm a "revolver guy" for the most part, but I've owned a XD-9 back in the day, and my wife has a G-17 now. I'd call them a toss up. Both are good guns. Get the one you like best I suppose.

My personal choice for a 9mm, and I've only got one these days is an Argentine FM Hi-Power.

Or just about any Hi-Power really. You could do worse.

Limited to those 3, I'd go with the Glock 17 simply based on the aftermarket and parts/mag availability in general.

That being said, I really like CZ-75 pattern guns and really more "traditional" looking guns in general, like the CZ75, 1911, etc. from an aesthetic perspective.

If you happen to want to get into CZ pattern pistols, I happen to have a polymer CZ clone for sale. ;) It's a SAR B6P. Only reason I'm getting rid of it is I have a hankering for a full steel handgun and recently bought a Taurus PT111 for carry so I don't need the "lightness" of a polymer frame handgun.

HK VP9, HK P30, HK USP, HK P2000 ;)

Of the three... The Ruger for carry, the Springfield or Glock for range fun.

From your list I’d personally go with the GLOCK, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right choice for you. Try to handle as many as you can and don’t miss the new offerings from SIG (P320) and HK (VP9).

Glock 17

The thing is VERY easy to service or modify. Anyone can take it apart and put it back together. There is a world of high quality holsters, mags, sights, factory and aftermarket parts for the things that are all over the place. I think the only things people by for XD's are nylon holsters and nylon tracksuits.

The Glock may "feel" funny in your hand compared to the others in the gun store. Ignore that feel. You need to judge how it feels in your hand when firing it. Totally different animal. The Glock "hump" will help your hand automatically drive against the recoil, and get back on target for fast follow up. The S&W will torque all over the place until you stipple the grip or apply a form of grip tape.

Go for a Gen 4 gun if you can. It comes with 3 mags versus 2, and features a better grip texture and mag release button.

There are a lot of good 9mm's out there. There are a lot of Glock haters out there who will go to any length to convince you that you are not looking at the right gun. Don't listen to them. The Glock product and history are proven.

It sounds like you answered your own question. Unless you can try your other two options, and like them better, then the XDm sounds like a safe bet for you.

Among my favorites are the Walther PPQ and HK VP9 as far as poly frame pistols striker fired pistols. Does not mean you will love them though but IMO worth trying them out also if you get a chance.

Good luck!

All 3 are solid choices, it would be difficult yo make a wrong choice here. I personally would go with a Gen 4 Glock 17, as I already have plenty of holster and mag options for it.

I'd go with a Glock 19 over the Glock 17. I find I shoot the 19 better the 17 and the 19 is easier to conceal.

Otherwise I agree with CajunBass - Hi Power. I have 3 FN Hi Powers.

This dealer on gunbroker has a ton of them that were Israeli PD guns:

Look for one that has matching numbers and a solid trigger pin. Some have roll pins in place of the solid trigger pin. Pass on those.

There is no shortage of good 9mm pistols available today.

All you need is to pick an action type... Striker, hammer, DAO, SA, DA/SA... It's all there, just pick.

Find a pistol that fits you well, no need to compromise on ergonomics when so many high quality pistols are available.

Of the three you listed...

I like the way the XDm feels the best, and I like the triggers on them, so it would be my first choice . There are aftermarket triggers available if you want.
I would not be unhappy with a gen 4 Glock 17. They have a solid aftermarket to allow just about any customization you want. I shoot Glocks well, despite them not feeling perfect in my hand. I prefer the gen 4 Glock as well.
The Ruger is a solid gun from all accounts, but all the extraneous safeties and the general aesthetics would put it far down my list.

As far as others to look at.

Strikers:
VP9
Sig 320
M&P with an apex trigger upgrade (wonderful trigger, the best Striker trigger IMO)
PPQ (best out of box Striker trigger)

Hammer:
CZ 75
CZ P-09 (or the smaller P-07 v2)
Sig 226
Beretta 92 family of pistols

This is just a short list... There are many more great 9mm pistols out there.

Of my strikers that I own, my M&P with Apex trigger is my favorite, with my VP9 as a close second. The trigger on the M&P, plus a couple little personal niggles with the VP9 is what puts the M&P on top. If it wasn't for the little niggles with the VP9, it would be my favorite easy. (the finger groves don't line up for me just right, and the slide stop is in a position that I sometimes don't get lock back on the last round, due to my grip... These things may not be an issue for another person, my fiance for example loves the VP9)

If I had a PPQ, it would be in the running as well.

As far as hammer fired...

I have a hard time choosing between my CZ75 and Sig 226... I like both equally, but they are very different to shoot. Each has its own virtues.

None that you listed.

HK P2000
Browning HP
CZ-75BD

No order here just what I would look at carefully. I have 2 of the 3 listed. I will get the last one soon.:D

I also like the HK VP9 and CZ 75 variants. The Walther PPQ shoots nicely as well.

Of the ones you listed, I would probably get the Ruger. It can be had for less $ than the others and works fine.

I like hammer fired DA/SA pistols or some DA only. For carry, I prefer a decocker on them or no safety at all if DA. Beretta PX4s can be set up that way as well and might be something to consider along with CZ variants if you go that way.

you already listed those in the right order.

however, i'd shy away from striker fire unless this is a carry piece. da/sa is so much nicer to shoot.

in da/sa, look at cz 75b and sig p226/p229.

in striker fire, look at the walther ppq/pps

I think it really depends on the trigger for that distinction.

The PPQ and the M&P with an Apex FSS, are truly great triggers.

The VP9 isn't bad either.

I love my hammer fired, but those pistols challenge the good SA hammer pistols.

I'd pick the G17 out of the three you have chosen. As others said I would definitely consider the CZ75 (love mine) and the PPQ. Both are excellent pistols.

Ruger SR9
I just pick up one the gun has close to 500 rounds threw it not a He-Cup
I got the latest series model and if you like the 1911 platform the sr9 fits like a glove.
Price $430.00
PS: takes a little getting use to the striker system

This is a really nice list, marine6680. I have no experience with the Sig 320 but otherwise, I like just about all of these better than the XDm, SR9, or Glock 17. There's nothing inherently wrong with those three choices. I just think dnsharpshooter would be doing himself a favor by checking out these other guns. There are others but the ones in this list are great.
