Want a new handgun. Advice please.

I agree that you should buy what you're interested in. I can rant Sig all night to you but that won't do any good. That's my preference. Most guys I know that shoot comp use 1911s. As far as being told that competition "may not be for you", many ranges offer training on comps, tactical, you name it. Depending on where you live, there may be one near by. Also, getting a membership would be the cheapest route to go if you plan on comping.

I agree that renting/diversifying will be your best bet.

I wish you the best in your new find.

:D

H&K P7 is the most accurate 9mm i have/ have shot.

$600 may get you a used on. additional mags are pricey though at +$50

i have a firedragon 9mm conversion bbl for my p239/40.
it groups <2" at 25'
the H&K is half that. the squeeze cocker may seem odd but you get use to it real fast.
hard to believe it is a striker fired gun!

Well if you have your heart set on a new gun with a $600 budget, then CZ is the way to go. If you are not opposed to a used gun in great condition and you can find one, then a H&K would suit you as well.

alternatives

What about a revolver? Last a lifetime, "six for sure", match-grade accuracy?

Or you could shorten the pay-back time on your student loans by a couple months...

I would love a Les Baer, but I can't afford it.

I am thinking of beginning to shoot competitively, so accuracy is important.

Thanks guys.

I don't mean to sound like the Yoda of handguns, but aren't those two statements a contradiction?

Sounds like you found one. If it was for the range I would get the full sized M&P 9 or a CZ 75 SP-01 and I might also look at the XDM. They have the the XDM on sale here now for $600.00.

The Sig P239 is already a great gun and is extremely accurate.

How about spending the money on a nice stockpile of ammunition?

Or, have you considered a .22 LR pistol? Get a nice Ruger Mark III or a Browning Buck Mark. It will help you improve your marksmanship immensely, and both of them (the Ruger especially) have upgrades available that will make them into match-quality tack drivers well suited for competition.
